  • The Florida Bar announced they have launched an investigation into Broward Assistant Public Defender Tamara Curtis, who was one of the attorneys who represented the Parkland shooter.       I totally agree, I have actually defended these lawyers since the beginning and that is because everyone needs someone to interpret the law for them innocent or guilty, however you can do that without disrespecting the victims and these lawyers have no defense in my eyes anymore, their actions speak for themselves and they should be dealt with.

      they are not excusing the behavior. they are explaining the LAW regarding the behavior and how it will affect the outcome of any investigation. If you listened to the one guy he actually said that lawyers, while waiting for the proceedings to start will do some disgusting things. And to be honest i would be less worried about her behavior, which is disgusting, and by the standards of the law is possibly morally wrong isn't ethically wrong, and be more worried about the possible moral and ethical behavior of the prosecution's actions if proven to be true. of fabricating evidence. Because regardless of him pleading guilty, if they fabricated evidence they would have to let him go and he will be walking free. i think that is a little bit more ehically, morally, and terrifying than a lawyer giving the families of the victims the finger.

He was fully entitled to a full and fair representation, and his lawyers will be handsomely paid for every moment they spent working on this case.     My sister, a tv anchor, was murdered in 1998. One of the most painful and infuriating things that went on in court was the hugging and pampering the murderer during proceedings. I understand they are attempting to humanize the monster, but have no idea the pain it is causing the victims family.

    As a parent of a murdered child, I was/am appalled at the conduct of these defense attorneys. I had to endure my daughter's killer's attorney consistently mis-pronouncing my daughter's name ... ON PURPOSE. Even when stopped mid-sentence to correct him, he continued to say her name wrong. At my impact statement, I too pointed that out as just another of the million things I have had to digest as the result of losing my daughter violently at another person's hands. AS IF losing her was not enough!
    Recently, I learned this defense attorney died. Instantly I felt relief and hoped he saw my face AND my daughter as he faced the God that I serve.

    It's frankly amazing how, just when you thought you caught the monster - suddenly the other ones come to surface, rallying around him. Monsters hidden and well-disguised in educated, esteemed positions, like this woman sharing a laugh with a _school shooter_ while flipping the bird at the camera, the eyes of the people, the taxpayers, the gravely injured families.       Yeah I can’t believe that guy sticking up for the scummy defence team. Surely they must have something about not bringing the reputation of the legal system into disrepute. As a midwife that’s what we had - it wasn’t just what we did at work, but if we did something online or in public that would make the public doubt us in the position we are in (that the public need to trust those in the healthcare field).     As the defense you should be respectful towards the victims at any time. Being so chummy with your client. It’s no damned joke. Family and friends had to sit there and keep quiet. All this time.       It's despicable, really. Given the opportunity alone with any of his own counsel, the chances are high that he'd happily take their lives for kicks and giggles. He has nothing to lose, and just doesn't care. Levity can be had within counsel groups, but should NEVER be done at the expense of the victims of this unquestionably guilty waste of space. Their actions during court were far beyond respectable lawyers easing tensions with the defendant. And you are absolutely right, this sends the very message that criminals deserve to have a good time in court at the expense of their victims.

      I was surprised that the judge allowed the victim statements to get so passionate. I'm also glad she did. This was such a high profile case. This wasn't one murder, these were 17+ teenagers at school. Where they should be safe. I believe this was the worst school shooting?
      They waited 4 years for Cruz to get life in prison. He pleaded guilty, they never had to relive the pain over again. But the jury couldn't have it on their conscious, they sentenced someone to death.
      Every word they spoke was well deserved. It was one of those once in a lifetime type of moments.

    My law professor was held in contempt and JAILED for smirking in front of a judge in open court. The middle finger from an attorney in court...I can't imagine. My professional credibility would evaporate.

      It's FLORIDA, are you surprised? And these guest attorneys in this episode are horrible to defend those defense attorneys. "It is what it is?" Is that how one articulates themselves after spend all that money in law school? Where is Emily D. Baker? Her observation would have had more value than these two...and I've been to a small claims court where a judge sent an attorney would of the room to change because her v-neck blouse was "too low" and she rolled her eyes at the judge -- that action got her in contempt. I wonder if it is because the judge is a woman. No one seems to question these actions when there's male judges.

      Yep, agreed - he certainly put her in her place. It's only absurd he had to. I can't imagine my unfathomable grief as a father being topped by the outrageous and disgusting behaviour of the people who are defending the monster, the demon who blew my childs head off. They're at the very least expected to behave in a dignified and civil manner, to respect the court and everyone involved, they couldn't even achieve that.

      Agreed. Sitting through the trial of the killer of your loved one and watching not only them, sit cold, absolutely emotionless except to laugh and joke about the situation with his defense, members of the court, who are supposed to uphold at least a little dignity.

      Ya I agree but by courts rule and constitution the judge would've been fair saying keep the emotions towards Cruz. She proved it by getting upset herself the courts including the defence are I ff the table . Ofcourse giving circumstances she expected and gave a pass except when talking about her kids she blew a gasket

She was competent enough to spare her client the death penalty in a case where many people wanted capital punishment. If she was accused by the judge for being in contempt of court, it still wouldn't result in being disbarred but people want to ruin her life...over what exactly?

    I am a lawyer myself and I can understand them defending there client, that's just part of our job, but being disrespectful to judge and the victims family is just too horrible. It's so true when one said that one can be educated but turning education into knowledge is in our hand, and these lawyers are example of how education in hands of some ignorant people can be a disaster .
