Here is a totally new RTS game project from a solo developer made in the Unreal Engine 4 and inspired by Command and Conquer, Supreme Commander and Earth 2140! Currently called Paths to Supremacy and already three years in development it looks stunning considering it is made by a single amateur game developer and ex ARMA modder with Unreal Marketplace assets he reworked to fit his vision.
Now do keep in mind there is no multiplayer planned for this game, it will be strictly a single player experience as multiplayer would exceed the resources and time this developer has. Another important thing to note is that instead of factions there will be an extensive research tree in the game and so while you start off from a generic futuristic military faction you develop it into a unique one every time you play as you research and apply new tech. Add to this the dynamic of always starting from a new randomly generated starting position and you will have much more variety than you might think at first glance.
A very interesting and rarely used feature in such RTS games will be actual fuel and ammo used by units and turrets which needs to be resupplied, but if you dislike this feature you will be able to turn it off.
Every map in Paths to Supremacy will have a more or less distinctive heightmap and landscape. This is not a typical feature for an RTS game, as most of them have very flat terrain. Sure there are mountains and rivers and such, but they aren’t playable, just for show. But in this game
landscape is part of the difficulty, because with different highs and lows on the map. The buildings and turrets cannot be built everywhere and their lines of fire will be limited by obstructions like rocks or hills.
As development continues the research tree will be implemented, after which helicopters are planned to be added as units. Shields and outpost will be interesting additions after that, giving more defensive options to the player.
Proper enemy AI with base building is another big upcoming feature, along with smaller ones like new sounds and music, user interface update, tutorial missions and all the other features you would need to properly play a game like this.

Most that I hear in the internet (I know i know) that most rts are custom build engine. SO are engine like unreal ti be make rts is....what....
@@nuruddinshah684 I don't know the exact answer. I can only say that I chose the Unreal Engine because I think it seems more accessible and a bit more innovative. This is of course just my own opinion. But that doesn't mean I don't like Unity. When I started Unreal about 3 years ago, there was a tutorial series about RTS in Unreal and I found it very interesting. After that my journey with Unreal began ;-)

I think this might be one of the biggest cases of inspiration I've seen in a while for my own solo RTS game. Also as an avid player of the old command & conquer RTS games myself, I applaud you. And if this was a year ago, I can only imagine what it's looking like now. I've heard that RTS games are one of the hardest to make in Unreal Engine, and yeah, I think I can certainly agree.

Thank you. Unfortunately, there are far too few games with base building and new ideas. I love this kind of games myself. The game speed can be a bit slower than too fast, but that's of course just my opinion.

I played only Earth 2140 and 2160 - was unable to run 2150 for some reason. But I was getting the Earth series vibes here a lot. That radar thing in 2160 was annoying though

Yeah, Earth 2160 had so many cool things that worked. I really liked the jammer vehicle that disabled your ability to control your units that could be countered by a vehicle with communications array. I also loved turrets on rails on the walls.
I loved the day/night cycles in Earth 2150 and the gameplay wasn't that hectic and it had a great atmosphere. Now I'm trying to create a similar atmosphere... not easy

Hi Luftwolf ! Indeed it is, I was positively stunned myself. First new units will be helicopters. I mentioned all the updates that are planned at the end of the video, along with enemy bases and missions.
I also think it could be a very good Indie version of C&C if he keeps up at this high level of quality development.

This looks cool as it is and I hope the dev will build upon it. I personally would like to see some urban combat in future with help of soldiers in building. But I understand, that would mean a lot of work for building a their destruction models. All mentioned games at beginning can be recognized in this game. nd when comes view obstruction, increased range by elevation and fuel model was also in Original war game I mentioned in different video of yours. Fuel is not that big problem, when done non-intrusively.

I must admit I don't recall your mention of Original War, going to have to put it on my to do list to check it out if it has already slipped my mind. As for urban combat it would be interested with this combat model but indeed it needs infantry to work.

ITS HIS Realistic SCOPE of developing the game
People underestimate balancing/creation/content etc.
No MP is a smart move, no factions and a simple tech tree to upgrade your army is a very smart route he chose.
I am still skeptical on gameplay however.
Take into consideration Sudden strike, and the later C&C games where A.I. Complexties were higher.
Here I'm doubting he has made battle plans/maneuvars for the enemy per difficulty.
Other than that Im glad to see solo dev do this...

As long as a player can choose to enable/disable the necessity for logistics support (fuel, ammo, etc.), I see it as a welcome addition and nice change, as it adds an additional dimension to the game. But it should be a feature or dimension that can be disabled, if someone wants to play a more traditional C&C style skirmish.

@@perafilozof Regarding Dungeon Keeper 2, this unique game had amazing feature when player can posses unit and play it as FPS. Battlezone 2 Combat Commander was FPS but you could zoom out and play it as RTS. I was happy to see close up of tank and night cycle

@@perafilozof radar one, the fact that you don't see every enemy unit on radar, rather just point where they coming to you and of course supply system. I have always wondered why RTS games never implemented that, I mean, war is basically about who has more supplies and better logistic...

Having just watched a tutorial on how to import the google maps terrain into UE5 I'm now imagining a game like this on the real world map...
This has my interest BIG TIME! I'm in love with the terrain features. Not a big fan of the fuel/ammo/healing lasers, but if I can turn it off it's all good.
My gripe is that maintenance factors can be finnicky, though add realisim... unless hey're multi-coloured lasers. That said, if fuel was instead re-interpreted as a parallel "radius" like radar, it could rock.

@@andreassteinhorst9426 Cheers. IMO I reckon the laser effects aren't needed. Fuel stations could copy the same effect that we have with the radar (that is, each fuel depot and fuel vehicle creates a circular zone that vehicles can't move outside). Ammo and repairs could probably also be area-effect with a subtle icon over the affected units, I reckon that would be a nice effect. That said it's really just me making a petty nitpick on one cosmetic feature, and I'm massively pumped about this game. All of the complexity of the gameplay is genius- strongly geared to promoting clever player tactics and maneuvers in a smoothe way- something very lacking in RTS games. I'm very excited!

@@perafilozof Im curious to see that ammo and fuel feature, i haven't seen that done well in a long time. Last time i played with that feature that made it super fun was the Advance Wars franchise, if you remember that one.
Also the Rise of the Reds mod had something like unit affect affcting adjacent units with power ups and such, the which was also such an awesome mod.
@@Avargatoth Well for now there is only the footage I showed, of the small stations rearming and repairing turrets, and of the support trucks repairing, refueling and rearming those tanks at 10:20.
It's actually a bit tricky to integrate such a feature into the gameplay, but I find it very exciting and also challenging. I'm curious how it feels in the end and whether it will be accepted.

a visual improvement would be to make the tank shells less of a "glowing plasma ball" and more like a tracer round

Looks nice, did it take a lot of changing the internals of Unreal Engine for performance with many units?
Not really, but there are some good ways to save performance. At this point I invested a lot of time. It also depends on the hardware of course (modern game needs modern hardware). However, in this game there will be no mass battles, such as in Sanctuary. But you will still have fun, for sure.

The game looks amazing but the biggest problem with RTS (imo) is MOBA's are easier for players to pickup (less micro) and that killed the genre. I'd love to play Kane's Wrath against people my own skill level like in League but the player base isn't there. Advice to Developer (I'm a developer too): Get multiplayer going but aim for that "Tower Defense" feeling. Most gamers fell in love with CnC for the Tesla Coil walls and Mammoth Tank rushes. You have to recreate that feeling while giving high level players opportunities to outplay others slightly (balance the game around the casual). I've been thinking of how to remake the RTS genre based on simplifying the mechanics around MOBAs. You seem to be the closest to doing it. Keep going.
Hello Robert Venture and thank you for that excellent comment. The exact influence if MOBA-s on RTS games has always been debated, and my own thoughts about it have changed over the years. My own last idea about it is that MOBA-s were born from the need of players who wanted to play RTS games at top level, but simply didn't have the capacity. And all would have been well, if RTS players who could play RTS at top didn't jump the ship in order to have a huge audience in front of which to show off their skill, as MOBA games got players from the middle, the bottom and at the end the top. So it's not MOBA-s that killed the RTS, but the players of RTS abandoned RTS for a chance at easy wins against people who were already trying to get away from them.
@@perafilozof You also have the PoV problem with RTS which is really what sets this game apart from other RTS I've seen. If you watch Bikerushownz or Masterleaf in KW, it's not very entertaining as a viewer or even player because you have to divide your attention all over the map. MOBAs fixed this by combining the gameplay into a single character. This game has a lot of potential because the graphics and animations are beautiful but more importantly the PoV is extremely well done. It provides a cinematic experience and if "spectacles" (like Epic Units or Superweapons) are added, new players will play over and over again for that dopamine hit of launching a space based laser or whatever it is that can be added. That's my next advice to the dev: 1st appeal to the casual player. 2nd add dopamine hitting spectacles.
@@robertventure7357 Right again. I love your analysis. And I agree with your advise for the developer. Casual is the way to go, players are compleatly fed up of competitive RTS games as the failure of Crossfire Legion showed.

Thanks for the discussion, unfortunately I couldn't understand everything. Well, my first thought is that I don't want to base this project on other people's preferences, or on very specific gameplay and mechanics, etc., because I don't care about sales figures. The basic idea was to develop an RTS game that I personally like, that contains my preferences, etc. because I was aware from the start that I cannot inspire every RTS player with my own preferences. But that's okay. Here's a little example... The camera perspective is severely restricted in most RTS games. I personally don't like that at all, because it also massively restricts the atmosphere. In most cases, of course, there are technical and performance reasons. But I really wanted a freely rotatable camera right from the start. The implementation cost me a lot of hours, because it has to look good from every angle. I myself really like this feature, but I know that others will not like it. This feature very often tempts me to watch fights from all perspectives, for example, instead of taking care of my resources ;-) On the subject of multiplayer, I can only say that I didn't plan this feature at first because I didn't want to make any promises that I can't keep later. Since I develop everything on my own, it's just not feasible and I don't have the necessary experience. But who knows, maybe I can submit this function later.

Maybe it would sound extremely ambitious. But if the developer could add infantry with the mechanics of company of héroes, that could be the best RTS ever.

Oh that, yeah, well it has the most pure and simple RTS and base building setup while being funs as well. I think that is the reason behind it

That's true. The fact that it looks a bit better at first glance could actually be due to the engine, but as we all know, the graphics quality only has a limited effect on the actual fun of a game.

Hi Nuruddin Shah and thank you for sharing your thoughts on these. I do agree most people won't really like Ammo and Fuel mechanics, but it wouldn't hurt them to try.
Control range works in a way that prevents you from taking over the whole map or rushing out until you have the resources to expand.

I loved MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries also, played it like 6 times over.
no multiplayers means AI + campaign only which means extensive knowledge of storytelling and AI coding. Unless the creator is really good at that too, I fail to see how this game can be interesting for a player. Sure it seems to look pretty good etc, but with Sanctuary RTS replacing SupCom soonTM, and Global Conflagration being a mix between Generals and Act Of War, both offering MP, I don't see where this game sits.
Hello GnougnouA10, welcome to my channel and thank you for sharing your thoughts on this project. You do make a good point about AI and storytelling for SP, and there are many more elements as well. It is true it will make the game much harder to market and bring in new players, but there are some gameplay modes which can be integrated into a singleplayer campaign which are not as hard to pull off with a single developer. But who cares, it was my decision from the beginning not to implement an MP mode. I don't want to make promises that I can't keep in the end. Also, I can't promise there will be a real story campaign in the finished game. I have to make some compromises because my time is limited. For me it is and remains a hoppy project. In this respect, the success of the game is relatively irrelevant to me. It may never be finished, who knows.
@@andreassteinhorst9426 I wish you good luck as RTS are one big pain to do. I tried my luck with UE4 but I gave up when I understood how client-server model was not made for shared simulations, MP being mandatory in my vision. I had a functional build menu, unit selection, camera and movements. I was working on the AI for vehicles, trying to make them do nice curves and follow the terrain properly. What a clusterfu*k it is...
@@GnougnouA10 Oh, then you've come a long way. And I know exactly what you're talking about. UE4 is good in many areas, but not in all areas and you have to make a lot of compromises, at least if you don't do it professionally. I'll keep trying to make it a playable version but like I said without MP. Thank you for your comment.
Looking good, but... I dont't belive that strategy may plaing good on UE. It taking too many resources of computer, and it is extremly bad idea to making games with many objects like strategies on this engine.

My attitude to UE related with two facts.
First, my own experience. Every time I played a game on UE I meet lags, freezes and other obscenities of the code. And, for example, then I played at games on unity, I never meet the lags. Even on my old video card HD 7700 pro.
Second, the interview with the developer of mechanoids 3. In this interview developer explained why them changed the engine from UE to unity. Here are few of his theses:
1. UE has bad height map, while in unity you may set any height at the click of a finger.
2. In UE far from the fact that you may implement assets in your game, that are often paid. In unity it much easier.
3. Normal optimisation in UE is possibly only with infinite amount of man hours and with a cheat cod to the money. Only very big studios can afford it. And it's too difficult for small teams.
4. UE suffers from its nature. The engine was originally created for rail shooters. If you want to make a corridor shooter, it won't cause any problems. Problems begin in all other cases.
This is about what my vision of the UE looks like. At the same time, it cannot be denied that there are those who sold their souls to the gods of chaos in order to carry out a miracle. I'm talking about developers of satisfactory. What they have done is unbelievable. But even in this game there are much performance issues. Especially at the stage of scaling production.
You are maybe making good points. I am not knowledgeable in these things to say. And when you mentioned Satisfactory it is indeed an incredible example of the UE taken to an extreme.
Thanks for your comment. It's hard for me to give an objective opinion about development with Unity or Unreal, I just don't have the experience for that. I can only say that I am very satisfied with the result so far. So far I haven't noticed any significant differences between Unity games or Unreal games either. All the games I've played so far have left a very good technical impression on me. But I also have to say that I don't use outdated hardware. In general, as a developer, you would also like to use or deploy the latest features of an engine, everything else makes no sense from my point of view. This is exactly what leads to the fact that old hardware quickly reaches its limit. Just as a note. I've also often heard that the Unreal Engine is not the 1st choice for an RTS game. I don't know the exact reasons. I am going to find that out ;)
NO multiplayer so sadly this game won't make the cut. Multiplayer and Custom games made zero hour, 22 years later I still player generals zero hour online the community is still strong

I think you will find that you are in the minority actually, as it has been proven by numerous polls, that about 75% of strategy games are singleplayer, offline, gamers. So while I do agree MP is a very memorable experience, and keeps games alive, they still get lots of players, even when not having MP.

@@perafilozof No, not really. There were tactics games before there were RTS games. RTS is a copyright free way to say "Dune-like", similar how FPS actually means "Doom-like".

It will have missions against enemy bases and units. Not sure how closely to a campaign will that be like. Too soon to say

Unity Engine is better for RTS than awful Unreal Engine.
I've heard that a number of times. Unfortunately, Unity isn't as accessible as Unreal. At least that's my own experience.

In some ways, but not in all. And it is not very affordable for solo developers.
The bad news is that multiplayer is not supported.
The good news is it could always be added if the developer gets more money and people on the project down the line. He only said he doesn't have the resources to do it now.

@@perafilozof Why limit base building to nearby existing buildings? This greatly limits strategies! What if I want to spread into other areas fast? Or use base buildings as a sort of forward attack or supply?

Hi, Yes, RA1 is my favourite C&C together with C&C3/Kanes Wrath. Mainly because I'm a multiplayer guy and these 2 games do it best in the franchise.
Look, as an RTS fan, waiting and seeing is basically what I constantly have to do, it just never pays off. The most promising looking games as someone being into multiplayer just NEVER release or release WAY too early and this game shown here doesn't really seem to scratch the itch of command and conquer games either. The pacing doesn't look necessarily fast and the scale is FAR bigger. I'd say this caters to Supreme Commander players way more, if you exclude the setting.

And even the higher budget ones like crossfire absolutely fail. So how would this game, that doesn't even seem to have a name, be able to stand out next to "Commanding Nations, Sanctuary, Beyond all Reason, Supreme Commander 2"
That's not saying that what I'm seeing isn't insane for a solo project. Indeed that guy seems to be pretty good at what he's doing. But that doesn't make it a good game that I would gladly pay for and spend time on. Not now. Not in a year and not in 2 years. Just look at Global Conflagration. That game has been showcased the first time like what? 2 years ago? 3 years? And it still looks absolutely generic and boring just looking judging from the surface. I know a lot happened under the hood but when I watch 10 minutes of gameplay from 3 years ago vs. now, it's hard to spot actual changes. And this is what the userbase cares about.
This game here will NEVER make it for the sole reason of missing any budget and lacking any identity that sets it apart from others. And I'm not saying that you need Identity. but if your goal is to make a clone of an existing game, you better 100% nail the visuals and gameplay to a point where they're better than their inspiration or people will just stick to that inspiration.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong but since this will definitely not happen before late 2024 (if at all) so I can aswell delete this from my radar again.
I feel your pain my friend. We are in the same RTS desert for the last 10+ years. From the games you mentioned I honestly had the most fun playing Global Configuration, and I can't wait for the new playtest to be opened.
I do agree many of the games that are on the horizon stay there for what looks like forever and even when they arrive most end up being disappointing.
I am very sorry Crossfire Legion had such a poor start and the developers are taking forever to make a 180 turn. But they have changed a lot of stuff already. It is just unfortunate that they made it too much like StarCraft and less like C&C.

Hello, I can understand your skepticism and it is also justified. Maybe you're right, and my project will end up being one of those you mentioned. Unfortunately I can't promise anything. I don't have a professional team behind me and I don't have any professional training in game development either, but I got involved and am trying it out.
I'm not developing this game for others, but first and foremost for myself. In the end, if other people like it, I'm happy. If not, then I don't mind. We all have different preferences, so it's impossible to please all fans. You are right when you say this game is more like Supreme Commander than C&C because I like that kind of RTS more. That doesn't mean I don't like C&C though. They are both RTS games, and yet they are extremely different.
This game may end up (if I ever get it done ;-)) somewhere in between. We will see. Thanks for your comment from your point of view.
