  • Hi all,
We had a lovely couple of days away in #Cavan last week and one part of our visit was a trip kayaking down the county's maze of rivers and lakes to #Cloughoughter Castle to learn about the #history of the beautiful island fortress.
Do check out these videos which touch on some of the people mentioned in the video:
DUNDRUM CASTLE: • A Day Out at Dundrum C...
CARRICKFERGUS CASTLE: • A WALK AROUND CARRICKF...
Incidentally, if you are in the area, check out these guys for bikes and kayaks as they were very welcoming to us: www.cavanadventure.com/Defaul...
And, as I mentioned in the video, I do write novels set during the Norman invasion of Ireland. If you'd like to know more find me on Twitter @ruadhbutler or on find my author page on Facebook.
PLEASE DO MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT MY NOVELS ABOUT THE NORMAN INVASION OF IRELAND:

It's only touched upon in the video, but the 1641 Rebellion started on this day in ... well ... 1641. I'd completely forgotten this is when I posted the video!

Just found your site doing some research on my fairly recently discovered ancestors. I am from the O'Reilly family from Cavan. The furthest I've gone back with them directly is my 6x great-grandfather who went to the US in the mid 1700s. His son was Sgt. John O'Reilly (he is Googleable) who fought in the War of Independence in the loyalist side. Interestingly, he belonged to a regiment called Butler's Rangers, headed by John Butler. I saw your name and thought that was pretty cool. Many Irish loyalists came up to Ontario, Canada along with the O'Reillys. Sgt. John and his family were very important in the development of Ontario. One of his descendents became the first woman in the world to get her degree in aeronautical engineering and headed the company that made the Hawking Hurricane during WWI! They were magistrates of large swaths of the province, first woman judge in British Columbia, fought in the war of 1812, built the first bridge over a river (so that a son could court a neighbour girl), one became 2x mayor of a major city, they were family friends with the first 3 Prime Ministers of Canada etc etc etc. I can definitely see where my mom's family got our drive, intelligence, creativity and perhaps a bit of a temper. If I were younger I'd write a book about them.
I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos.

Live very close to Lough Oughter. Been to the castle, via kayak also. Its a great way to nosey about the island. Well worth visiting. Frightened off some lads fishing there as I had my VHF radio on open channel 16 and someone transmitted over it as I was approaching. They left at pace, not sure why. I think local lore has it that the bombardment was very effective on the walls, but a siege was. Once captured after its surrender, the walls were mined, with charges placed and blown up.
