An ancient Irish rath in the Sperrin Mountains
Hi folks! I was just up walking my dog Finbar in the Sperrin Mountains between #Beaghmore Stone Circles and #Davagh Forest Park and thought a video was in order about a geographical feature that appeared from the middle of the marshland: Cnoc na Scinna or 'The Mound of the Knives', a #neolithic rath.
Check out another of my videos about Beaghmore to see more from that incredible site in the Sperrin Mountains and if you have any questions hit me up on Twitter @ruadhbutler9143 or on my page on Facebook.

My grandpa family on his mothers side the Fosters are from Tyrone, Ireland and were irish protestant. Our families came over aound the same time they ended both headed west to Wisconsin and Illinois. Their family would again head west to Sacramento. They met in high school and was married at 17. They had 6 children. They moved to anaheim california because their burke plumbing business got a contract with a up incoming developer "Disneyland". They were married for 67 year until my grams passing. Brilliant work you've done Ruadh!! Excellent information on my family's history! An O'Brien here from W. Belfast originally. 2 Americans bought me from my da after my mother died and made cheap labour of me. I put myself through university, spent most of my life in several African countries as a refugee worker. Bought a home and acreage in NW Washington State in America, as a widow, and go home frequently. Moral of the story: even when you're born in a war ravaged slum, being Irish (and being an O'Brien doesn't hurt!!) means the world is open to you and you can achieve anything for which you're willing to dedicate your life!!

When you talk about Princess Nest, please please don't use terms like 'lover''. Her entire family were killed by the Normans and she was taken hostage and later became a concubine to Henry. She was only a child! Having to bear the children of men twice her age. She was, in modern terms, a victim of sex trafficking by the Normans. She would have had no choice in what happened to her.

She haunts Carew Castle, her former home, as the Lady in White. If anyone ever goes there, please pray for her to find peace. Rude Butler comes from a family that was always jealous of Nest's descendents in Ireland from her son Maurice, especially the Fitzgeralds. Hello my Butler cousins! I wish you had gone on with the origin story here to see how it corresponds with what I have gleaned from Ferrar, Blomefield, Suckling, Wace, etc. Sources have pointed out the relationship between the Burgh family with the BURUN tenants in chief as well as of the PAYN (or PAGAN or FITZ-PAYN’s. My branch comes from East Anglia, as the Payne’s spread out into Norfolk and Suffolk and were associated with the very same locations mentioned in your videos. Records exist showing the relationships between Payn, Butler, Burgh, Lacy, Clare, etc. from the 12th-century. I’ve spent the past several years documenting the records that link these families in their network which included :PAYNEL, FITZ-PAYN, also found as sons of PAGAN, that evolved from names like VESCY, TIPTOFT/TIBETOT/TRUSSEBHT. If not related by blood as I believe the number of records over such extended periods of time suggests, they were nevertheless related through marriage- which has allows us to trace much of our ancestry by simply reading the history books, following the lords they served, and the records they left, along with the property records that show how it descended amongst them. My Big-Y DNA results were a “rare” and “close” match with Kilteasheen 22 found at Roscommon who lived 960-1300 AD (95.5% Celtic DNA in the R1b group) and records (and Blomefield’s Norfolk) indicate our ancestors had been in Ireland before 1333 when they appear in Leicester with A Ralph Butler in North Kilworth, followed years later by settling in Norfolk by the 1370s. So much to learn and unpack it all! Great stuff!

I found out that through my Dad's side we go back to Annie Corrigan and her father was an Obyrne and her mother was an O'Toole. I was surprised how far back that line went back. To King MacDunlainge O'Tool and his father King Tuathal. And it goes back to a King born in 028 AD. I've been reading and listening to try to understand the history around it all. One ancestor was Christianed by Saint Patrick. And it was nice interesting to find out that it was oral history passed down much like the Native Americans have family oral histories. Out of all my ancestry lines none have been documented back that far into history before the Norman Invasion. It was a treasure to find.

Then you can begin to form a picture about where your family began. Census records are good, but I'd suggest Ancestry.com (or similar) is the next stop to see if you can connect what you know to the research already started by others. The O'Connor surname is very old and very grand, so you'd be surprised how much info is already out there waiting for you! Good luck Shannon!!

Most people reading this are descended from Charlemagne, William The Conqueror, most of the high kings of Ireland, and umpteen others. People in Poland, Norway and Portugal are just as likely to be descended from an Irish high king as people from Cork or Dublin. You're not special!
