Mark Knopfler doesn't just simply play the guitar, he tells stories with it. Terry Williams on the drums was on fire here, one of the most entrancing performance for me

Mark Knofler is one of the best guitarists ever.
Facts!
Even though his style of playing is different from most (finger picking), I think in his prime he was the best of them all. Having said that, I probably haven't heard enough of other players to make a proper judgement, but I do love his playing.
He is way next level and on. Wow. Lord the drummer killed it too

The lead singer/guitarist is Mark Knopfler. I don’t know if you noticed, but he was finger-picking the whole time. He’s one of the all-time greats!

Yes Sir. Terry Williams is the greatest drummer of all time in my opinion. Plenty to debate, but for me it doesn't get better than this song. It's next level drums.

The story is that terry's dad was in the audience, seeing the band for the first time. Terry was showing off for him

Terry Williams' father was there that night & so he went all out! His father had never been to one of their concerts & seen his son play live so it was very special. I've been fortunate to see them live. They're AMAZING ❤❤❤
I HATED this song when it came out in 78 (I was 12)….I liked pop music & KISS…..Only in my 20’s did I finally grow to love this !…..Now w/CZcams I discovered this version & it’s seriously an orgasmic vibe……So glad you discovered this version also….great react !
I am right there with you. Same age and poor taste as a pre-teen and early teen. Thankfully, our tastes improved with age. Back then, I would have thought Mark Knopfler was not cute but I have changed on that too. lol.

They're absolutely brilliant individuals who you could listen to by themselves but together they're out of this world and besides their phenomenal playing you are right, they just love what they do and enjoy the hell out of.
The bassist and the drummer are amazing beyond Mark Knopfler. Top level.

The backup guitar player is mark knopler’s brother, so yeah, they played together a lot. He ended up leaving the band to go solo

I think you’ll find that the backup dancer was actually the keyboardist.
He’s surrounded himself with keyboards so whilst it looks like he’s dancing, he’s actually playing multiple keyboards.
That’s also why later you noticed him playing “one handed“. The left hand was on the other keyboard

Knopfler is incredible. Masterful technique, gorgeous tone. The whole group really knows how to jam. Dire Straits is one of my very favorite bands.

Interesting story behind this song. The lyrics tell the story but it was true. Them going to seek shelter from the rain and coming across this band called The Sultans of Swing playing like they were at a packed venue but there were only about 6 people in the bar at the time.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Romeo and Juliet is a personal favorite.
Can add " skateaway", expresso love" and "down by the waterline".

The best part of this song is that fantastic guitar solo at the end. The radio version of the song cuts out before it even gets warmed up.
This live version is quite different composition compared to the album version, I highly recommend listening to that one as well, that one is soo sharp!

Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He has a distinct sound. Telegraph Road is my favorite from Dire Straits and the Alchemy Live version is terrific. More Mark Knopfler please!
Mark Knopfler is the ultimate Guitar god!..and the person with the"long guitar" next to him is John Illsley, the bassist of the group and his great friend..an amazing band and an amazing performance!
That is one of the most Iconic songs and the guitar work on that is out of this world I saw Dire Straits live in 92 and Mark Knopfler does not use a pick he is one of my all time guitar hero

They say that music can really help the human psyche and this is one of those songs that proves that... you can't NOT move and you can't NOT smile and feel uplifted with music like this! Happy Holidays and Peace to All!

What blows me away is that Mark Knoffler plays without a pick - just his fingers - and gets that sharp, clean sound.
Always exciting to see a legendary band when they were at the peak of their power.
Thanks for the reaction bruh, classic stuff. The "volume drops" have almost become a lost art form these days but it's called "dynamics". It takes some mastery cuz all the musicians have to be on the same page to pull it off. Creates mood, crescendo, climax, allows soloists to be heard, etc. Back in the day, we would say " break it down" and the drummer would do a fill or just a rimshot and the band would break the groove down to a whisper. You could feel the audience instinctively get quiet in anticipation. With technology, we've made real strides musically but unfortunately we've lost some human interaction and feeling along the way.
Proper proper musicians who know exactly how to draw the audience in with their fantastic music and performance. Mark is rated as the 27th best guitarist ever and his technique is so unique and brilliant. I have seen them live and the audience was going crazy and they did 4 encores. Mark grafted his ...lls off and he is the lead guitarist who always gives that extra

Yes they did let the volume go down, just sensational. Mark Knopfler was serioiusly incredible on lead guitar!! And the drummer - WOW!!
The drummer is standout keeping the pace of this beat. Dire Straits is a musician's band. Very respected by their peers. Mark was known for never playing a song live the same way twice! ETA Nice to see YOU having fun!
But that I precisely what i DONT want to hear at a concert. I know the album lyrics and rhythms, that's what I am paying for, not a ad lib jam session for 3 hrs maybe with some lyrics I recognize. That's insulting to the fans. Jam after a good live recognizable rendition of the song, you know at the end of the song.

If I want jam sessions I'll go to a Phish or Dead Head concert and lose myself in whatever they are playing. But if I'm strange for wanting my live music to resemble my album music then I like being strange

Also, Mark Knopfler did one of my favorite movie soundtracks too- "The Princess Bride". It's all instrumental, but that guitar is recognizable anywhere.
One of the things I love about this song is the recognition given to "guitar George, he knows all the chords". That's George Young, oldest brother of Malcolm and Angus from ACDC, also the rhythm guitarist and co song writer with lead guitarist Harry Vander, from 60's Aussie band The Easy beats.
Dire straights definitely needs more of your attention, they're well worth it. 😘👌💖

The album this track is from, Brothers in Arms, when released on CD, was considered the most perfect studio album and was used by Sony and Philips to perfect the balance of the lasers used in every CD player and every CD player had one or the other companies lasers in them
The drummer is Terry Williams, my claim to fame is we are distantly related (by marriage, my grandmother's family) he also shares my birthday

Dude lol! I love it! Seeing young folks discovering truly extraordinary live music. No auto tune, no pitch corrected vocals, just sheer raw talent! This is one of my favorite videos because it shows you what todays music will never have… authentic talent, they are actually playing and actually singing live, no lip syncing to digitally mastered studio recorded vocals or instrumental backing tracks played for them to pretend too. You will rarely if ever see an actual “live” performance from any artist today, simply because technology has made real talent obsolete.
Taylor Swift!!??? Really!? It’s only going to get worse with A.I. kudos to your discovery my man… keep digging into the 50’s, 60’s the 70’s & even some of the 80’s it will open your eyes in a wonderful way to music that is the G.O.A.T.

Van you are one of the Kool Kids, that's why so many of us watch you. It's like hanging out with a friend(s) and listening to and discussing the music that you love. Ha ha, just love the way you called them 'these old guys' - this concert was in 1983, Mark Knopfler (lead guitar and singer/songwriter) was 33 and the guy in the white suit, John Illsley, was 34!
Sadly I never saw Dire Straits but I had the pleasure of seeing Mark in concert twice in 2019. He's lost his hair and maybe a bit of dexterity on the guitar but there's no doubt when he steps on stage you're in the presence of greatness.
For a similar kind of sound, try 'Tunnel Of Love' (my favourite).
For a slower sound, try 'Romeo and Juliet' or 'Your Latest Trick'.
For something more serious, try 'Telegraph Road' or 'Brothers In Arms'.
For something fun try 'Money For Nothing'.

Hey dude, I've watched this reaction many times and just now decided to comment (#nerdtalk incoming!): When you're asking wether they're getting "quieter" before the chorus - Yes. Dire Straits were masters of musical DYNAMIC which describes the range between the points of lowest and highest volume within a song. The larger said range, the more dynamic the song is. This is being displayed jawdroppingly good when they enter the bridge part (@8:12) from which they then build up again towards the loudest part at the end. You can even see the bass being manually decreased in volume (@10:06) by turning its volume knob (or Potentiometer) and later being increased again. As opposed to having the audio engineer do that from the soundpit. Amazing stuff.

What a birthday treat for me. I love this band and especially this song. They were so outstanding I don't even have a word for it. Mark Knopfler kept playing long after the band broke up. As lead guitarist and lead singer, he brought so much to the band, yet every one of the was a stand out. Mark went on to work with Emmylou Harris for a couple of years, and they released an album that is fantastic. You should react to their song IF This is Goodbye.

Dire Straits bro! That was our sound in the outgoing 70's and starting into the 80's. Leadsinger and leadguitarist's Mark Knopfler's sound until this day has remained as unique as can be! He has grown older but I believe he is still performing. Bands like this made it reasonable to save up for a decent sound system other than just a boombox or a walkman. You wanted these guys to perform inside your living room or in your kid's room depending your age. More of that bro, can't go wrong with Dire Straits.

Mark's little bro David was rhythm guitarist and he left early after the 1st record; drummer Pick Withers thought he found a better gig elsewhere too. Playing on the Alchemy Tour are Hal Lindes on guitar and the fantastic Terry Williams, lately of Dave Edmund's Rockpile (q.v.). This is one of those songs that transcends your "Top 10 favorite songs" list because it belongs there, too, even if you didn't put it there originally.
The drum gets buried in the mix on the album. This version is fantastic!
it's been said that you can judge the performance to expect by the number of sweat bands Mark is wearing :) And yes that drummer is fire. This is one of my favourites. I think I'm right in saying that the younger guy in the black tanktop is Mark's brother. If you haven't yet heard Gary Moore, I'd suggest his appearance at the Montreux Festival , Still Got the Blues, or Parisienne Walkways, or any really. One of the best without a doubt.

Telegraph Road from this concert is maximum epic. This whole concert and also DIRE STRAITS-SYDNEY FINAL CONCERT 1986 which is easy to find on CZcams with the song Tunnel Of Love and the whole concert too are my 2 fav. concerts ever with a special mention to DS On The Night live1993. Mark said in an interview w Brian Johnson AC/DC he went into a pub as a youth and heard a band play to a pub with people not paying attention. He thought it was funny they called themselves the sultans. He made a song based on they experience...

Rec you always listen to studio versions first and hit the live versions if you like studio enough to revisit.
