The Bowler hat was a trademark of the late John "Bonzo" Bonham the original drummer. His son performed with the remaining members and he was performing with Heart to honor them. He kept it a secret from them, which was a total surprise to them. That's why they were crying.
That wasn't just a bowler hat like his dad's he was wearing, it was one of his dad's actual hats.
John Bonham played a lucite Ludwig drum set. I wonder if Jason is playing his dad’s kit here. (Because that’d be really, really cool.) 😎

@@gunhedd5375 it is. It has John Bonhams Led Zep emblem on the front, the three intertwined circles. Robert Plant, in an interview, stated that it was one of the things that made him emotional.
Side note: Zep did not know Jason would be there that night. Prior to the show, they invited Jason, but he told them he had previous plans and couldn't be there. Then he showed up, and did his dad proud.
Jason said.. it broke his heart to tell the rest of LZ he could not make it, because he did not want to spoil the surprise

Yes! This performance absolutely hits me my heart so hard because it's so beautifully done. The energy going back and forth between the members of led Zeppelin and Jason and heart and you can feel their love just feeling that whole place. It's something that just so touching and beautiful and powerful to witness all at once.
Dude, i’m 57 years old and I’ve watched this performance at least 15 times since it was televised…Maybe the fact that Jason surprised them, maybe the bowler hat, maybe the rings on the drum kit,!but what an absolutely spectacular rendition of one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll songs ever created.. hats off to Ann and Nancy…🇺🇸❤️ and I’m still tearing with joy and sorrow…🤐

Johns son, Jason Bonham,was on the drums for his dad!! The bowler hats they were wearing was in honor of John because he often wore them . It was very emotional to see LZ there watching on, and Robert getting a little teary eyed ripped my heart out because he and John were so close💙 This will never get old!!🎶🎸🎵🎸

Maybe the greatest cover of all time. And good lord how much pressure was on the Wilson sisters to come out and do that in front of THAT crowd. If I'm honest, Ann's power is overwhelming. The kiss she blew Led Zeppelin at the end was almost like saying, I'm gangsta too boys.

When Ann hits that note after the solo, it gets me just like it gets Robert and I start crying everytime I listen. What Anne did at 62 years old was a Masters Class in singing live. If you don't feel this, you're DEAD inside..

Ann Wilson is 62 years old in this video. Think about that for a sec. Ann is easily one of the greatest Rock female vocalist of all time.
John Bonham, Lepp's great drummer, died very early in his career and in this tribute his son, Jason, is on drums in his dad's iconic Bowler hat. The choir wearing bowlers, to ME, depicted his dad watching his son payin' a stunning tribute to him (and his Zepp-mates). The heart-thumps from Jason to his dad (er ... and his Zepp-mates) always brings a bit o' mist to these old eyes. PS ... really happy that ya enjoyed this.

Ann Wilson has the best female voice ever! Nancy Wilson is a master guitarist. The drummer is Jason BONHAM, John Bonham’s son. I believe that touched Led Zeppelin the most.Robert Plant was in tears.

Or Nancy having to play with no accompanying instruments at the beginning. So hard to do, just guitar solo and nothing else. If you F up everybody will know.

The drummer is Jason Bonham. His dad was Led Zeppelin's Drummer John Bonham. The hats were a tribute to John, because he was famous for wearing Bowler hats like his son is wearing, for performances. A 'tip of the hat' shall we say, since we lost John in 1980.
Heart has been doing Led Zeppelin since the early 70's . Nobody covers Zeppelin like Heart !

Yeah, I wish the arranger of it got more props. It's a very specific skill, to be able to rework a masterpiece to include choral work etc, the arrangement is out of this world good.
totally agree. The performers are incredible, but every part of this production is on point. You can analyze audibly and visually and it only enhanced and support the song. A lot of thought and effort went into this.

The bowler hats were for their late drummer John Bonham who was known for them. The drummer on this was his son Jason, that Zeo didn't know was going to appear. That's why at the end he sent his heart out to them and (uncle) Plant did the same. Oh and bass player John Paul Jones has appeared on a few Heart recordings.

I believe they are part of the elite allowed to cover their songs. They are very particular about their music being used for anything. Spectacular tribute!

The bowler hats were worn as a tribute to John Bonham (former drummer of LZ) (RIP 1980) that’s actually his son playing in this performance and when they come out wearing them, Robert Plant got very emotional….beautiful tribute

04:08 Ann's not singing lower. The original song was in A minor, Heart are doing it in A minor. It's just that instruments (like the voice) of higher *timbre* generally sound fuller in their lower *pitch* ranges. In other words, if you played the same notes on the higher register of a baritone sax it sounds thinner and more abrasive compared with the same notes on an alto sax. Same would go for 'cello vs violin, etc. People often confuse timbre with pitch-hell, even scientists often do it.
This is why Karen Carpenter, once she was convinced her voice sounded better in its lower register and started cranking out hits, used to joke: "The money's in the basement."
I can't tell you the number of times I've watched this video, and it still gives me goosebumps. Best. Cover. Ever.

The only thing better than listening to a truly great song for the first time… a song that blows you away, changes your outlook on life, gives you hope or moves you in some way you can’t really explain…. Is watching a good friend listen to it for the first time and seeing that it has the same effect on them as it did you. Watching your reaction to this video reminded me of that good friend and all the great music we shared with each other over the years. She’s been gone for a while now, but for a few short minutes this morning, she was right there with me, listening to Heart perform the best cover of a song I never fully appreciated as much as I do now. Thank you.

Stanley Kubrick directed a movie based on a book called "A Clockwork Orange." This was an X rated film at the time because of the violence, and the English thugs in the movie dressed in white jumpsuits (boiler repair uniforms - also worn by Pete Townsend in the early seventies when he grew tired of stage costumes) and they also wore "bowler hats" which were normally associated with English Conservatives. Bonham loved the film so much he adopted the boiler suit and the bowler hat on stage.
That is a very interesting bit of knowledge.
When I was in high school, many years ago, I took a class called "Production". (It was the only title the instructor could come up with.) We learned what was involved in making TV, Theatrical, and Cinematic productions. For my final that year, I studied Kubrick, and in particular, Clockwork Orange. And wrote a paper on the unique and inventive production techniques that Stanley imployeed and/or invented to make that movie. The hardest part of the whole process was getting my hands on a copy of the movie. It had not yet been released on VHS. I ended up paying $75 for a bootleg copy. (That was ½ a weeks pay for me at the time.) I watched, and rewatched that movie so many times that I knew all the lines. (I was prone to quoting lines randomly for the next year or so.)
I got a very good mark for my project. I think mainly because the instructor was "weirded out" by my unusual subject choice.
My first time hearing this song by Heart...they dropped the tone...and is absolutely awesome!...What a fantastic Tribute! I went to a Led Zeppelin Concert in the 70s...an absolute wonderfully Tribute!...
