My pitbull mix, who I had no trouble with for 18 months suddenly snapped out of nowhere and killed my other dog who was elderly and never challenged him. The older dog was mauled almost beyond recognition. It was touch and go if he would make it but I eventually had to put him down when he went into shock and his heart was murmuring. Reluctantly I had to take the aggressor to the pound for a humane euthanatizing as I don't trust him with our third dog nor do I know that he wont snap at our grandchildren or someone else now that line has been crossed. I'm beyond devastated as I've lost two dogs I was very attached to.

This happened to us this week. We had our rescued pitty for 3 years and absolutely adored him. He has shown intermittent aggression the entire time we've had him, but we kept working with him. He had attacked our cat - who fortunately survived, he bit a service technician at our home - but fortunately didn't hurt him, and "nipped" at a number of people. We had a number of close calls. Our son stopped letting our grandaughter visit our home because of the dog's aggression. Our vet recommended euthanasia, as our much loved dog had come from an abuse situation. We persisted in trying to "fix" him. Training, prozac, restraint, you name it. Then last week he attacked the cat again - entirely unprovoked. The cat lingered four days with very costly veterinary care. Today, the cat had to be euthanized. We made the gut wrenching decision to euthanize our beloved pitty as well. Our hearts are broken, and we'll always ask ourselves if we gave up too soon, or if we waited too long. Our poor cat did not deserve to suffer the way he did. Our grandaughter should be able to visit us without fear. We were well meaning people, trying to do the right thing. My opinion FWIW - we have to stop elevating aggressive dogs, mislabeling them as "misunderstood" and claiming "it's how you raise them" - at the expense of helpless smaller animals and people.

Horrible to hear how a dog tore the face off a person. Some dogs are not worth the risk.,

This is wildly inaccurate and potentially deadly advice and terribly depressing to see the guilt tossed back onto owners making a difficult call. We are currently challenged with the decision to go through with behavioral euthanasia for an aggressive dog that has not socialized into our "pack" after 6 months of structured training, vet visits, bloodwork, medication, worked with behaviorist, muzzle work, etc. All to land at the end of a day where our friend was bit in the face unprovoked. In the past, the dog attacked our other dogs, bit me (stitches required), went after my wife, etc - all while we made justifications around why it happened each time. We have developed a pattern to mitigate most triggers over this 6 month period but the reality is this dog will never be safe as we can't guarantee that those safeguards will work 100% of the time or that a mistake won't happen which will put one of other other dogs or anyone nearby at real danger of serious injury. The most humane thing to do is to make the hard call in some situations. Rehoming the dog isn't an option with the bite history as most rescue and shelter organizations are overfilled with dogs without bite histories. Additionally if there was a home that did "fit" the risk of bite is still there given the behavior of the dog and the additional stress and anxiety that would crop up from the rehoming process. Throwing blanket statements that owners are ill-informed or don't know what they are doing is just insanity - I can safely say that the 50+ dogs that we've rescued, rehomed, fostered, done hospice for, etc over the last 20 years - there are certain dogs that the most humane and ethical choice is to end their life. Not being open to that as a last resort is just wild to me.

Thank you so much for this comment. I feel sick to my stomach with guilt right now but like you said, sometimes you try everything but things still don’t work out how you want. This video really is quite ignorant and dangerous. Your comment reassured me that it’s not a great idea to continue *hoping* my dog won’t attack another person or dog again despite her very aggressive and dangerous history.

So I watch this video and I hope I get a response from you.
I’m thinking of euthanizing my dog because it has bit me “the owner” personally 6 times , one in my forearm , one in my face, and 4 times on my right hand. The 6th time which led me to go to ER and get 6 stitches on the palm of my hand.
So my dog at times acts good , and at times has a behavior that’s very “betrayal” like he’s a boxer and a Labrador mix.
When I give him a command nicely he doesn’t listen , so when I say it firmly he comes to me but when I try to caress him that’s when he snaps and just ends up biting me. Not just me but to my mother as well. But with my father who is literally mean he is very angelic towards him.
So should I euthanize my dog? Or just spend 5000us dollars for dog training for aggressive behavior?

My dog has been going on pack hikes/walk once a week for a couple of years. Great very well know local pack leader. However my dog doesn’t care for other dogs , he is more of a people dog. He’s also a big Corso/ Bully mix 120lbs doesn’t generally care to go on walks much.
Sometimes he literally shakes because he doesn’t want to go on the pack hike, which really makes me sad.
I make him go for the socialization of the pack, especially because he doesn’t care for other dogs much.
Once he’s there he has a great time but he tugs on my heart when he gets picked up.
Do you experience this as a pack leader?
He does have a dog friend that he plays with out of the pack.
He is also only reactive to other dogs on walks when the other dog is staring him down .
I do manage this but sometimes he pops off still and I correct him with the quick pop of the prong collar and he immediately corrects
    himself.

Thanks Angie. I thought exactly the same thing. The dog's not at fault it's the owner, the leader of the pack. My dogs love me, and I'm able to maintain my status as the leader with fairly simple methods. I think it's so sad that dogs are killed because their owners don't understand their behavior... it's a tragedy really. Thanks for your videos!

What if my dog reacted and bit the pet hotel holder because he was walking past another dog and lunging then reacted when the handler corrected him? They said there was a little bit of blood and bruising, so it sounded like he was reacting and showed restraint.
It was a busy holiday weekend at the pet hotel
Hes had other issues but we generally feel safe in our home but I have two kids and not sure what to do

Angel what do you think about the uk going to ban the xl bully because people have been killed by them and some seriously injured. The government will make their minds up in December they have said that they will let most people keeo the dogs but will have to be muzzled in public and in your garden. Have really good insurance and be done so thay cant breed again. Its a real shame because the xl s i have meet have been dogs with a great nature with people and other animals as well. 🇬🇧

This is such an idealistic video. Come back to me when you’ve personally owned a dog who you’ve had to spend thousands in other people’s and dog’s medical bills from injuries they’ve caused. When you’ve spent hundreds on medication for anxiety, spent every minute you possibly can protecting them and training them to no avail, consulted many vets and behaviorista, and yet they still go after children every chance they get. A dog who listens and obeys you as the pack leader but SNAPS the instant they see another dog.

I wish you’d upload a video detailing your experience with your dog and why you ultimately chose euthanasia.
It sounds like you genuinely did love them, so your insight would be even more nuanced than many.
Please consider it? I for one would watch.

Most people are calling quits too fast without trying to correcting the dog severely. You cannot bribe you relationship with treats only. The dog needs to understand that you are the fair leader. Dunno if you are one of those who would not even try that but in any case, it's better then killing your dog.

    • @pbk9
      @pbk9 Před 6 měsíci

if a dog is gonna put his teeth on me, I make sure, it's the worst day of his life. Again, I am not sure if you are one of those "Zak George" like-minded person but treats can only get you so far with an aggressive dominant dog.
