- Since arriving in Ella in Sri Lanka - I have realized how touristy is the town. So I have spent only 2 days there and moved to the next destination. But I came across my favorite flavor roti in this mountain city. Since the town is touristy, the businesses also adjusted their products and westernized them a little bit. That is how I found out about Nutella Roti - enjoy the experience and let me know what do you think?

Traditional Sri Lankan breakfast options:
1. String hoppers with curries (that's what the lady was mentioning looked like noodles - typically made from rice flour)
2. Red rice and curries
3. Coconut rotty with sambol
4. Thosai (like flat pan cake) with curries
5. Idly with curries
6. Pittu (made from rice flour) with curries or fruits like banana
7. "Kiribath" (Milk rice) with fish curry or spicy onion sambol

Would you try this Roti with Nutella & Banana? How much would you pay for it? 🇱🇰
We pay around 350/=Rs for 1 Nutella Banana rotty, and what you ordered is little larger portion so it worth for 500Rs
Nutella is expensive in Sri Lanka due to import restrictions and taxes and they applied generous portions of it (comparatively lol) so that's why the price is a little high
Around 500 - 600/- ,
Plz try to a"kotthu" for your dinner.

Welcome Aboard 🙏. It's great to have you in Sri Lanka🇱🇰 Davud. Wonderful to see you sampling local cuisine🥘🍲🫕. The white meshy roundish food is called "Sring Hoppers" its typically eaten with a white potato or dhal curry, a hot meat or fish curry and spicy coconut sambol (try it for B'fast).

Sinhalese Food: traditional SL rice and curry / milk rice with katta sambol
Tamil Food: Thali / Jaffna Prawn Curry/ Rosam or Pulli Anam
Muslim food: dam biriyani / watalappam
Malay Food: Pittu and Babath Curry
Burgher Food: Lamprise

ella aint a city per say .. its a touristic town in the mountains that attracted backpackers initially on a budget .. ' & its transformed rapidly in to a very touristic town.. esp cos the weather is kinda perfect european summer all through out the year .

3:08 in Sri Lanka, we call it "Godamba roti". Its almost same like saj. But we mix little oil so it more closer to parata.

Bro, don't bother getting up from your table halfway into your meal. You can ask them to bring you the bill when you are done eating or pay on your way out. However, it would be better to get the costs before you order to avoid surprises 🖖🏻😊
U R right ✅️, it is confusing to get up & go for the payment & "they" think that you are done.
I used enjoy traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. And the local chocolates, tea cakes and biscuits are delicious
Hello, just a heads up, in Sri Lanka its considered impolite to ask someone to pay before they have finished eating. Also it is rude to ask for the bill before you have finished eating, because it implies that their food wasn't good and you don't plan on finishing it, or that you don't trust them because you thought they were trying to hustle you by charging high prices. Just ask for the prices before ordering.
In General Sri Lankan’s are eating most of the time rice for Lunch .

Davud, I stumbled on your vlogs the one in Colombo, you really surprised the other two guests by paying for their lunch. This is not normal, but a beautiful gesture of your kindness. Never heard of the Nutella Roti but something I want to try on my next visit home. Try the Crab Curry at the 'Station Restaurant and Bar' at Wasala Rd. Wellawattha. Colombo 6. Tea in srilanka is called TÉ.. Or u can say tea. We dont call it chai.. The cooked banana is actually called ash plantain. Usually we mix all the curries with the rice and eat. Glad that u r enjoying srilanka.
In Sti Lanka “the” or tea has 2 versions. Plain tea or milk tea. Plain tea is tea with a desired amount of sugar or any sweetener like honey or jaggery. Milk tea is tea with milk and sugar. Chai is a whole other concoction which is milk tea brewed with many spices and usually more expensive. Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and nutmeg are usually blended with tea leaves and it has a pleasant aromatic flavor.
Through out South Asia & South East Asia, these banana fritters, mutabbaq & roties/puratas and pancakes, are now modernized and innovated with clotted-creams, chocolates, Nutellas, cheeses and almost any toppings one could think of, the good thing is, the original versions are still preserved.

My last two trips in October and January all SL wear masks even children he is abit disrespectful although polite walking about without mask in his filming …that’s a problem in SL that don’t show prices ..why every video he do this interrupt his eating to pay bill very strange 670 rupees !!!! You should try eating authentic Sri Lankan food. Try Mount Lavenia hotel Buffett. Heavenly food. Btw this is not Sri Lankan usual food. Unfortunately you are missing delicious Sri Lankan food experience this way.

I had very tasty wood apple drink in Sri Lanka...Best pineapple........You get mango also but they are of very poor quality.......For vegetarians, little choice is available.....

You should try herbal porridge one day. Very delicious and healthy. Pronounced Kolakathe (kolakada). There are so many varieties. Perhaps there is a vendor near the beach but it finishes quickly as it is very nuitrious.

Typical Sri Lankan breakfast is Rice and curry from the night before with coconut sambal etc etc etc 😇😇😇 but nowadays "hipsters" are modified the Sri Lankan cuisine

Nope, you are totally mistaken. There are many different breakfast meals in Sri Lanka like Hoppers, String Hoppers, Pittu, Roti for ex. I suggest that you get your facts right before you comment,

I'm not sure if there are only foreigners shops in Ella; all shops normally set prices based on the goods and services they provide and the costs they incur, not on who they cater to.
@@harshakumara970 you are correct . But what i have experienced is , whether right or wrong whole Ella town is geared to cater Foreigners and not locals. It is really not right for ordinary local tourists . But without openly discriminating local tourists , they have set their prices high so automatically a certain segment of local tourists are left out.
@@rotelco1 He is Azerbaijani. It, like Sri Lanka, is not a wealthy country. Another issue is that when foreigners learn that the prices are high, they tend to avoid, even if they are financially capable of paying those prices. They look for bargains, that's why they come to countries like us.

Yes, even in other parts of the world, tourist areas (particularly urban areas) are expensive. This is due to the high cost of rent, labour, and other necessities in those areas. In most of our establishments, it is not purely expenses that cause them to raise their prices. Perhaps, as you suggested, to chase away locals and create a sense of exclusivity, which, in my opinion, does not help tourism grow.
