Gustavo Arellano said it best in his LA Times Piece: "His strength lay in the fact that he wrote as someone thankful that the Los Angeles of today was not the Los Angeles of his youth: a white, Protestant town where our most significant contributions to America’s dining scene were fast food empires and cafeteria dining. But he also came to food as a perpetual newbie - a cellist by trade, and someone whose Falstaffian figure immediately marked him as an outsider who needed to prove his bona fides by getting it right.
    He always did."

This news is so sad. I've been to a few of the places he wrote about and they were all great. I even attended a pie tasting event at UCLA that he was a guest judge for too, and he seemed like such a cool guy. That was only like 3 years ago :(

glad to see that you can say nice things as well as come up with very angry missives when someone disrespects a guy you admired.

There are a lot of assholes who post without knowing what they're talking about.

A minor editorial note for Christy: I think you will find that if you want to really emphasize a point, dropping the 'very' from 'very revered' actually conveys more of that sense of reverence than adding the amplifier. I think that subconsciously we know that when someone adds 'very', they're often overcompensating, they're trying to drum up sales, and we start to doubt the assertion. Leaving just the 'revered' part has more purity, simplicity, and salience. You don't want to distract from the revered part with the gaudy very. Anyway that's just my opinion. Talk how you wanna talk.

And what about a person who's super quick and eager to point out that someone is an asshole? Wouldn't that person also be a bit of an asshole? Or at least quick on the trigger, eager to apportion blame and dispense hostile rhetoric.

Did Ben just say Los Angeles was the greatest city in the United States?
It's not even the best city in California...

For food choices, LA just might qualify. There is a 3 mile stretch, where the types of foods you can get, are from over 30 different countries of 5 different continents. It is a pretty amazing food scene. The multitudes of people from other nations are concentrated in L.A. So some of the most interesting, most tasty, and most unique restaurants are found in Los Angeles. When you live in S. Ca., and visit L.A., it is like visiting a place abroad, but with all the niceties of the USA. But I do agree, LA is not the best city in California. That would be San Francisco! Just kidding. Lol.

It's so quaint to think that a food critic is even a valid profession. Has anyone here ever read a review of a restaurant, and were so moved by the prose that they immediately called up and made reservations? Or even made their way there within the next, I dunno, six months? I guess that's more a thing if you're living in a big city. And/or you have plenty of disposable income. I should really look into getting some of that instead of pretending this is somehow unusual, that people like to know what restaurants are terrific and which ones leave something to be desired. I mean why not, we do that with movies, why not meals. Saves you the trouble of shelling out for a dud.
edit: ok listening to Christy's comments at 1:25 I see that Jonathan wasn't about hoity-toity fine dining at all, he was all over the map with formality and price range.

Isn't thjis stretching what the flick a little bit? A food critic, a local one for that matter. YOu have friends who were friends with him and he was once the center of a documentary.
Are you just desperate for topics now, you just need those clicks is that it?

You're not in LA right now. You're on the world wide web, it's an absolut minimum of people who watches this is living in LA. And is he a legend in filmmaking or eating, and is this a film channel or an eating channel?
Maybe you guys should show the rest of us some respect cause people die every day in every city on the planet. This is what facebook is for not a fucking film channel.

    • @mikedabeewithknowledge3216

basquat76 dumbass los angeles is the biggest film culture in the world. I shouldn't have to explain what Hollywood means to film. Most film channels on you tube center in la and its the second largest city in the country so im sure its not a minimum. Hes a legend and icon. And obviously its a great emotional deal for these 3. So they thought they would let people who may not know about the impact this man has had by recommending a good documentary in short video that you didnt have to click on or comment on

And here comes the lols and lmfao to seem like you're so on top of this. I didn't write to you, you wrote to me Einstein, which pretty much makes you the plague. You just can't handle someone not seeing things your way, cause that's not how internet trolls like you work.
