The Biggest Wasted Opportunity in Yakuza

- Yeah you read the thumbnail you know what's up. Kamurocho Hills has, and sadly will probably forever will be, a massively wasted opportunity by RGG Studio for a huge expansion to same old Kamurocho. Imma explain a bit of why and probably what they easily could do in Yakuza 8.
Plz don't boo me RGG Studio I'm right.
Songs:
Yakuza 4 - Geist Obscuration
Yakuza 4 - Solitude
Yakuza Kiwami 2 - Heading for Kamuro Hills
Kurohyou 2: Ryū ga Gotoku Ashura-hen - Little Revenge - Hry
Like I say at the end this was just a little side video 'cause I wanted to chat shit about Kamurocho Hills. Hope you enjoy it regardless :)
So you are saying that this was a big project, setpiece and plot point that took alot of time, resources and conflicts to finish and now it's just there and turned out to be without actual use?
Sounds like a very realistic depiction of real world building projects.
Maybe they wanted something where it does have significance but in a way you wouldn't expect.
E.G. North Korea's tall pyramid building was supposed to be finished in the 90s but it's mostly stayed stagnant.
I felt so sad the other day when I couldn't actually enter Kamurocho Hills during freeplay in Y5. I'd spent like a few minutes trying to find where I could press E just to get inside but apparently it's just there for the story battles
I feel you man :(
Kamurocho Hills is just the place where the best long battle themes are.
It’s basically just one big speaker blasting out some phat jams lol
Me & the boys ready to the Dragon of Dojima while blasting Solitude
Hello peter
My dad works at RGG and he says there's going to be a Dead Souls Kiwami with every playable character from the series dude trust me
No Kenzan Kiwami?😂
@@deepflare1279 Lost Paradise (hgg) kiwami
I can't wait for the noncanon spinoff where you get to play as Kiryu, Ryuji, Nishki and Mine.
source: it came to me in a dream
Kenshiro in Dead Souls Kiwami
Okay, but imagine this:
After all these years, Kamurocho Hills is finally opened to the public. Kiryu, eager to experience the fruits of his best buddy's labor, sprints across town, stopping every 3 seconds for a quick breather and definitely not killing several dozen ambitious teenagers on the way. Majima greets him at the entrance with a traditional knife fight, except Kiryu doesn't have a knife, so it's completely unfair for Majima. After having his dick thoroughly flattened via countless Tiger Drops and Sumo Slappings, Majima finally unveils the all-new... Goroland! That's right, to nobody's surprise, Kamurocho Hills was a front for Majima's copyright infringement! Get ready for Yakuza 8: Mad Dog vs. Mickey Mouse, the very first Yakuza survival horror game! Play as Majima as he attempts to escape the clutches of Walt Disney, who has recently returned to the land of the living after feeling a disturbance in the public domain. So get ready to evade both death _and_ taxes in the newest addition to the Yakuza franchise! The Franchise that is Definitely Still a Realistic Crime Drama™!
Man you nearly gave me a heart attack 💀
Imaging being a manager of one of the store, that would actually be a nice addition if they decided to add another business mini-game.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if your job at Kamurocho Hills would also be to stop random yakuza from going to the roof all the time to fight?
Cabaret Club Minigame again? After 17 Years with no Cabaret, it's time to go home. (Not really because last time we saw it, it was 2018)
Ngl kamutocho hills in yakuza 5 looks so beautiful
Something I like about the multiple floors thing. Stairs, there are heat actions for stairs, a unique throwing animation in 5 to throw someone down stair. Verticality does not come to mind when I think Yakuza, but I think Kamurocho hills could make it work in a way
Think of this... we could get an ESCALATOR heat action lol
Kamurocho Hills was basically started by a bunch of ex-yakuza with a crazy one eyed man as their leader learning how to build shit by searching at the internet.
What more do you want? xD
Majima and the boys (TM) just watching old internet tutorials 😂
LMAO I highly I appreciate the little wait for the loop of Heading for Kamuro Hills.
It really is weird that it hasn’t come back, given how important it’s been throughout the franchise. It’s been a bummer just seeing it closed off, would love to see it in the Dragon Engine.
That fan reaction would be on point if it comes true.
I feel like bringing in something people want or know about would also be more interesting than adding a high school but that could just be me haha. Who knows though maybe RGG Studio do it one day :(
wake up honey new yakuza content is up
As much as I'd love it to happen, RGG are known for tossing out locals after a game or two. Not to mention Kamuro was a ghost town in LaD since all of the budget was used to create Ijin-cho, and you can tell in a few games they'll probably never gonna come back to Kamuro and focus on fleshing out the new district
Pretty much, yeah. Knowing RGG Studio they’d probably be more likely to do something random as hell like bring back Okinawa lol
@@SnowiestAngeman in fairness I would love to see them go back to older locations and maybe see cameos from previous Yakuza characters.
Would love to see Nakahara (and the orphanage of course) again in Okinawa or go back to Nagoya and have a little subquest with Shinada that ends with him becoming a pound mate or something.
5 especially has all these new locations that got one game and then were dropped, never to be seen again
I feel like the story of Kamurocho has been told for so many games, even Sotenbori has been kinda overused too, if there's new districts of Tokyo to discover and to have fun with than hell yea lets go. It'd be nice if they kept the ability to go back to the old districts as a homage, with some minigames intact and shops, unique items there.
yeah its such a shame that there's basicly no reason to go to kamurocho in either like a dragon or lost judgment outside of story missions, as honestly i personally love the more dense compact nature of kamurocho vs the much bigger ijincho which while still having a lot to do in it feels more empty than kamurocho somehow
I don’t think Kamurocho Hills itself needs any narrative significance. I think it works best as just a set piece for a massive long battle because the villain just happens to be there.
It feels like kamurocho hills was made for long battles and they did make some good long battles for it
The only real time you got to explore it a little without fighting people was in Dead Souls but that was just a small area
And then we have the Millenium Tower used in about every fucking (mainline) game as a final or extra dungeon. KamuroHills was great tho...
As for a reason why this isn't implemented *yet* in the current gen, it's probably due to a mix of adding "pertinent" new content and the Dragon Engine transition. I'm sure they tried to get it done for 7 but got a shitton of bugs they couldn't correct (or maybe as you said, lack of shop ideas since it'd flourish like crazy.)
I can see it being done for 8, hopefully. I (realistically) don't see it happening on any Judgment games tho.
This is a pretty cool idea, Inever really thought about what they could actually do with Kamurocho Hills tbh.
Ay well now you know haha
There should be a sub story where the protagonist needs to go to the very top of Kamuro Hills but the elevators don't work so you have to take the stairs.
Meanwhile Majima's Get to the Top is blasting at unreasonably loud volumes
Flashbacks to FF7 Remake if you choose the stairs instead of the elevator...
7 remake stairs or the MGS3 ladder hahaha
"Oi, oi... I should've quit smoking"
I pray that you they make it fully explorable in Yakuza 8 and the next Judgement game or whatever they'll replace it with if they can't come to an agreement with Johnny and associates
Considering it was built by Majima Construction, you’d think they’d do something with it but nope.
Yakuza 0 - Kiwami, park + purgatory
Yakuza 2 - Park is demolished, space made for foundation, purgatory no longer operational
Yakuza 3,4 - Construction begins, 4 has the main layout almost complete
Yakuza 5 - Kamurocho hills is finished
So much but nothing to do than kick ass...
For real and I think the weirdest thing about it was how it actually played a part in the story then after 5 they were like “Kamurocho what?”
IMO the biggest wasted plotential in Yakuza is (actual) Joon-gi Han. It was such a waste to off him as a stepping stone for "tHe SeCrEt Of oNoMiChI" and Hirose, both of which become completely irrelevant after Yakuza 6. I would've loved to see him moving on from utter defeat and the end of the Jingweon. It would have been perfect for Like A Dragon too since its whole story revolves around the idea of moving up after you hit rock bottom.
Yeah you're right but it's funny because RGG Studio like to kill off their interesting characters and then seemingly regret it like how Ryuji's in Dead Souls and Ishin, then more recently with Joon-gi Han in Yakuza 7. It's literally like they just go "whoops" whenever they bring a character back from the dead lol
Maybe -- just to mess with you specifically -- they'll instead replace the burnt out Shangri-la with a new complex. The other fun things I've heard for future games are having it not be in Japan and do a little globe trotting. Kaiji Tang, Kasuga's English VA, suggested setting an entire game/adventure in the Mall of America in USA and that actually WOULD be insane and fun.
Nahhh. A Japanese studio thats attempting to move the series to America will not end well. Cultural differences are going to clash and it won't be pretty. It may end up in a cringe worthy result.
The next Yakuza set piece is a local IKEA store. Plenty of furniture to smash over people’s heads there
@@SnowiestAngeman Meatballs instead of takoyaki, oh yea its all coming together.
@@user-jh5wt8lq9x i think it would be fine as long as they do their research. Ghost of Tsushima was a western company making something very Japanese and it was also loved by Japan, so the opposite is totally possible.
@@tigerfestivals5137 That's true. Obviously the above suggestion was made in fun by a VA, but I could see a portion of a game being in another country if it made sense in the plot and if it was researched well.
That music sync at 5:13 tho. That shit looked fire
You see I do that stuff intentionally a lot but that was 100% pure accident lol
I'm Platting Yakuza 5 right now and had the exact same thought a few days ago, why was this area never used despite RGG's love of reusing content??? It's all there, even more fleshed out in Y5 than it was in 4... I can't wrap my head around it.
You go into kamurocho hills and goromi is in a shop trying on shoes or something. New poundmate :)
I was so disappointed when I got to 5 and learned you couldn't go in. I was so excited seeing it more and more complete each game expecting it to become a completely new district.
Tell me I'm not the only one who stopped during the long battles in Y4/Y5 to *actually* EXPLORE the Hills and enjoy its beauty?
Kamurocho Hills has been one of my all-time favorite locations in the Yakuza world, me, as a pixel artist myself, has been quite inspired by this place (and music) to create my content in many of my mods. So yeah, it means a lot to me.
And yes, LOTS of potential wasted. Place has the layout already, cool exterior (the new outer wall in YLAD and Judgment improved the overall design even more, like the ads outside of it and the little outdoors stage it has). The yard part is also gorgeous, beautifully lit and with incredible design. The interior you can have the atrium for shopping, eating and playing and why not? Even renting a safehouse at the luxury apartments upstairs (the Yakuza 5 part).
My only complain in the video is the lack of 36 Strings Nocturne in the choice of music. You put both bangers from Y4 (Geist Obscuration and Solitude) so I was expecting to hear Y5's but didn't pop up. Oh well, at least we're on the same page: MAKE KAMUROCHO HILLS USEFUL!!
Yeah, long read, I know, but as I said, this place is one of my all-time favorite places in the RGG world and had to express my feeling about it. Thanks.💜🖤
Remember how RGG just blocked off the entirety of the Northern area of Kamurocho on Yakuza 6 just so they have an excuse for us to not enter Kamurocho Hills with how open the map becomes due to the Dragon Engine
I heard it had to do with that they just didn't have enough time to properly finish Y6, and honestly it shows. We have no Kamurocho Hills, we have no Champion district, there's a bunch of stuff just lacking in general, Kiryu's not even given a proper send off. It's a shame, honestly. So much potential but not much that could be executed.
@@Dachios and we got Purgatory erased completely from the underground of Kamurocho as well with no explanation whatsoever.😔
@@DonVecta no underground mall, no roof access. Its a tragedy.
Bro… the fact that we couldn’t have a brawl or enter this building freely in the later games (especially DE)… damn
All the videos you upload seem to be directly targeted at me, I am the main consumer of this content. Thank you.
I've waited since kiwami 2 to see and interact with the building in its finished state just for it to just be just there. I felt like an idiot going around kamurocho hills just to find out you can't enter it.
That's honestly an amazing idea, imagine all the side-content, mini-games, stores & substories you could shove into Kamuro Hills.
And with all that content comes opportunities: Imagine if you're able to customise the main protagonist's clothing? Similar to changing classes, that would be the perfect addition in Yakuza 8 (?)
I'm getting a bit off-track, but I really enjoyed your vid Snow!
The thing that gets me about Kamurocho Hills is that it's the most tangible part of the progression of the city throughout all of these games, y'know starting as a homeless park in 0/1 and then having it slowly get constructed up into near completion in 5
Yet starting with 6 they just have done nothing with it onwards, though I kinda get it in 7 since they weren't really focusing on Kamurocho as is in that game.
Either way I hope that someday they fix that and do smth with the place
Lost judgements combat has made me want to see a yakuza kiwami 3 that has the styles from 0 and the style switching from lost judgment, and maybe some majima dlc to use his styles from 0 because yes
I want a Yakuza game set in South Korea just for the return of idol gameplay.
Maybe then Joon-gi Han will have a karaoke song
imagine you could explore kamurocho hills like in dead rising 1. it would be rad as hell
Shinada and tanimura though
Guys remember in yakuza 4 we could go to underground markets and even parking lots what happened to that??
Oh, and the rooftops, man, the rooftops in Y4 had it's own vibe as well. I still remember the beautiful rooftop garden atop the Volcano Pachinko building. Was gorgeous.
I hope they use it in the next yakuza game.
It actually upsets me how they haven't used Kamurocho Hills for something serious at this point. Considering a lot of the things you have requested in videos actually ended up in the games, it would be sick if they would use this asset properly moving forward. Make it happen RGG Studio!!!
Also, bananas.
BANANAS
It's a shame that they've never really done anything with the millennium tower, kamuro hills, or even Shangri la besides having long battles or boss fights take place there. I'm always hoping that RGG will someday allow us to explore more of these buildings interiors.
Wait, did they really leave Shangri-la just... STANDING THERE!? Don't tell me that a building like that never got demolished after all those years.
@@chainsawplayin yep it's still there standing. Even in Lost Judgment.
5:14 perfect music sync
They gonna probably use it in Yakuza 8 who knows
I mean Kaito files are right around the corner, so it's not out of the realm of possibility
I doubt it but I’d love to be proven wrong haha
Not only is it never open, they also never light up the tower at night. It's been dark ever since Yakuza 5.
ever since yakuza 5 when we explored kamurocho hills and having all these badass setpieces I always thought it would be an amazing area to explore. And then we just never got that and when Judgement was released I honest to god thought FINALLY because it's a new series we could explore kamurocho in ways we've never done before kinda like how when Tanimura and Saejima were introduced and we got access to Little Asia and the rooftops of kamurocho but nope, just another game without kamurocho hills as an explorable area :(
Some urban legend says the reason we're still prevented to go inside of it to this day is because it serves as a hiding spot for proof that Dead Souls was canon 😮 like Arase is running an obstacle gun course with zombies in the basement.
it naturally just expands Kamurocho too if they can't expand the map's lanes, they had the right idea in 4 with multi stories build and underground levels but all of that removed in 5 and 6
Yeah very true point about the underground and rooftops of Yakuza 4
Wish this was narrated. Because i mostly listen to audio.
The biggest wasted opprotunity imo is how the story seemed to go completely off the rails after Y4. Am I tripping or did it seem like Kiryu was finally going to get more active with the Tojo clan again with Saejima coming in, and they completely threw that away starting with 5?
I binge played 0 through 6 over the last few weeks and I'm still feeling some type of way about how 6 was written and ended.
Yeah a big problem playing through the games like that is how apparent the events of the previous game mean like almost nothing in the next one lol. I mean recently Yagami in Lost Judgment has literally none of the character development he had in Judgment with things like everything to do with Emi Terasawa and the fact that apparently no one realises he stopped the mole murders. It's why 0 probs has the best story because there are no games set before it besides the samurai games lmao
The games sadly lost any plot progression post Y2. And there is sadly a reason for this: the devs don't want to "spoil" the prior games stories, hence why the characters don't evolve or ever talk about older events from the older games in actuall detail. It's a thing in Japan for these kinds of games because the Ace Atthorney series is plaqued by the same problem and I think it's really sad. Could you imagine how insane the games could be if prior events mattered and affected the plot and characters?
Imagine for example a Yakuza 5 that takes into consideration that the police force must've imploded after the conclussion of Y4, and how the Tojo could've used that for their advantage to regain their power? So much potentiall for great plots is just getting left behind.
I noticed that too. If you watch 4's finale, it's undeniable that Kiryu was going to return to the Tojo. I thought it was a pretty cool way to advance Kiryu's character. Realising and accepting that he's too important to leave the clan. I think people wouldn't say Kiryu was pointless in 4, if 5 actually continued what 4 had planned. I'm baffled by how little people talk about this.
@@randomduck8679 Also apparently Kiryu showed Daigo how heavy the cross of leading the Tojo Clan is, Daigo just... went into hiding and chased after his highschool friend after being threatened by Madarame.
I would like an expanded version of kamurocho like in yakuza 4. With the basements and the explorable roofs, kamuro hills, the millenium tower and they could also venture out and recreate the shinjuku station that is originally attached to the game area. in fact in lost judgment you can explore a small part
1,000% THIS! I was so excited to see and explore that area as I played the games, but NOPE!
Nice username lol
@@SnowiestAngeman
Maybe in yakuza 8 they could turn it into a dungeon or something similar (Or they could make yakuza 8 just everyone chilling in okinawa at the orphanage for like 20 hours )
P.S. If joon gi han is not in yakuza 8 I will literally explode In Real Life so I hope rgg takes that into account when making the game because I do not want to die yet .
😔
If Joon-gi Han isn't in Yakuza 8 I will die alongside you
atleast Dead Souls makes good use of Hills
make kamurocho hills great again
god yeah i think about this so often. why in the fresh hell did they finish a brand new skyscraper in 5 and then were like "hm. millenium tower, again"
very frustrating, would love to see them do something with kamurocho hills. banger video tho
Thank you for watching my dude :)
I think that they are gonna use tatsuya ukyo and masayoshi tanimura mainly cause I think tatsuya could be in kamuro hills after kurohyou 2 and is just relaxing and tanimura came looking for him so he could help him solve a case or something like that and they do some duo kinda thing to try and solve it
Assuming RK and the remnants of the omi are still around by yakuza 8 they could use the shopping centers as a way make money and fund their gang and no one would stop them since the tojo are gone. Plus there hasn't been a battle on top of hills or millennium tower in the dragon engine yet.
Yeah true 'cause the closest we got is the final battle in Kiwami 2 but that version of Kamurocho Hills got demolished :(
Kamurocho Hill’s biggest payoff was in Dead Souls; the greatest Yakuza game.
Weather in Yakuza games is a big missed opportunity
Yessss
What yakuza 8 should do to kamurocho hills is make it into either a story-based or premium adventure dungeon just like with millennium tower in like a dragon, its interior layout would be brand new and unique with multiple floors and enemies in every corner and with amon or the boss waiting at the top
I honestly think it would be cool if they just completed opened up a lot of the surrounding areas around Kamurocho in general. Like being able to go to some of those areas of the city that are out of bounds in all of the games would be cool for a game.
I could easily see disco come back in Kamurocho Hills because that’s just something Majima would do
If Kamurocho Hills isn't used... It may be something for a Majima spin-off game, I feel it, trust me guys, Ryu Ga Gotoku will do this one to one of the most loved characters in the whole yakuza franchise.
I think it's already exists and called yakuza 0
Voice reveal?! For me i see that yakuza 8 shouldn’t include kamurocho. I want something all new!! But still great video and good point about doing whatever shit with kamurocho hills because they kinda wasted it. But maybe they thought about it but it would be very hard to add mini games and people and shops in kamurocho hills for the ps3 hardware
Yeah like it's fine that it wasn't utilised in any of the PS3 games, but I would've expected Judgment or onwards to have at least done something with it. But nope. Also I've spoken in a few videos in the past but like only really in some of my more obscure ones hahaha
Its sad to see that the game that most explored kamurocho hills was dead souls
Wouldn't be surprised if this was also a major influence for the Tojo's downfall. So much resources spent on it just to flop and be nothing to use, untill ironically, the worst game in the series, dead souls, lol
Here's a possible cool name for yakuza 8. Yakuza "Enter the Dragon"
After i finished Kiwami 2 i thought that kamurocho hills was gonna be a spot but i was disappointed.
I played Like a Dragon after Kiwami 2 so when I saw it was all completed I assumed maybe it was explorable in a previous game but NOPE
i wouldve liked atleast the opening where the foodcourt is, maybe even show where the fuck purgatory connects
If Yakuza 8 started to come out I wish they import that area hills in the game. I wanna go there Soo bad 😞
Ryu Gagotoku-sama is a legend
You forgot ichiban holdinds. Doesn't mean Ichiban can own the Kamurocho Hills for his company in Tokyo.
Not the main focus of the video but if they actually erased Joon-gi Han from the next game like you said I'd be pissed
Bro I would go to RGG Studio myself and cry at their front door until they put him back in
@@SnowiestAngeman Tanimura was already bad enough, i'd cry to RGG too
Or here's a better thing, kamurocho hills as a side dungeon
Dear god, no.
straight up though, Ryu Ga Gotoku studios does reuse Shibusawa's rush style a lot, especially in the dragon engine
This building is difficult to handle. The basement is a facility that was secretly held by government officials, and the facility was managed by The Florist of Sai and built on top of it by Majima Construction. At the end of Like a dragon, government officials, politicians, and yakuza don't seem to have the same power as before. If RGG is going to use this building in the game, they will want to do so in a way that ties into the story.
Yakuza 8 to take place several years after yakuza 7.
Another W for deadsouls
Another w to add to the rather small list
(that's a joke btw)
@@SnowiestAngeman thats the thing to a few w for dead souls its already too much for a zombie spin off
This is why you should play Dead Souls.
Clearly, you have not played Dead Souls.
rgg pleaseeeeee
Something tells me they might not add it in Yakuza 8
Not even in Gaiden…
Definitely a wasted opportunity. Kamurocho is getting kind of dead lately tbh.
Soon all of Kamurocho will just be Shangri-la
How is it that I'm 3 minutes and I just now realized what he's talking about? I thought he was talking about the Millenium tower. The way you showed the Money and shit. I think you fucked that up.
Did... did you not see the thumbnail, the fact that I show the front of Kamurocho Hills with a sign that says Kamurocho Hills, the several times I said Kamurocho Hills, all of the background footage in Kamurocho Hills, the Kamurocho Hills themes, the fact that there is any construction mentioned whatsoever even though the Millenium Tower was created before the events of Yakuza 1, or just the fact that this video is about Kamurocho Hills? I really hope you are joking.
@@SnowiestAngeman Yeah. I'm this fucking dumb. Also because in the Tubmail it looks as tall and actually taller than the Millenium Tower. Baka Mitai
I’m honestly surprised they didn’t have a true final millennium tower level for kamuro hills, maybe we’ll see it in the next game
