  • Everyone hates bottlenecks. It’s a common question on our forums to ask whether a part will be a bottleneck… But what does a bottleneck even look like, and how can you avoid one?

    This is why I spend more on the CPU first. If the CPU can't handle a particular game, then there isn't much you can do about it. Either it works or it doesn't. Most games (aside from terrible console ports) have lots of graphics options you can adjust to reduce the GPU load, but there's not much you can do to reduce CPU load. Basically, you should want the GPU to always be the bottleneck, because if you start seeing lower framerates due to that you can turn off the prettier graphics and keep right on going.
    I mean, up to a point of course. Some GPUs just can't handle anything no matter how low you set the graphics. But you get a lot more leeway when it comes to the GPU load, so making sure the CPU will definitely be up to the task is far more important. Plus, if you become unsatisfied with the performance, it's a lot easier to upgrade the GPU than it is to upgrade the CPU.

    • @Beetleman20
      @Beetleman20 Před 6 lety +3

      plus you can always upgrade to a new GPU assuming your PSU can handle it, upgrading CPU however, is another story.

    • @IkBenBenG
      @IkBenBenG Před 5 lety +16

      GPUs have a very standardized PCI express connection which all of them use and which basically any motherboard has. Assuming your power supply can handle it, you should be able to swap to any GPU regardless of manufacturer easily. This hasn't changed in a while so even if you have a computer which is several years old you'll usually be able to just unplug the GPU and plug in another and after a simple driver update you'll be on your way.
      CPUs on the other hand have lots of different sockets, and different ways of talking to the motherboard so even if a CPU fits a socket it may not be compatible with the chipset on the motherboard. These sockets and chipsets change quite regularly and there are often several types on the market at once (and way more than just one for intel and one for amd). RAM can also be a problem, since if your PC is several years old then it probably uses DDR3 technology which isn't compatible with the DDR4 technology which is the standard today.
      I am currently stuck with a 4th generation i5 for that reason. If I want to upgrade my CPU, I'd also have to upgrade my motherboard since its socket isn't used by modern CPUs anymore. I'd also have to replace my DDR3 RAM with DDR4 modules since modern CPUs don't support DDR3 anymore, which with the current RAM prices is rather expensive.
      Those two combined (relatively basic compatible motherboard + 20GB of DDR4 memory, both from a trusted brand) would cost me about €300. That is just to make my current computer compatible with the new CPU, so it excludes the price of the CPU itself.
      You may be very lucky and already have compatible memory and a compatible socket, but in most cases a new CPU is an expensive replacement when you account for the other parts.
      A CPU is also harder to replace physically since it's a much more central part of the computer and you'll have to remove the cooler from it. If you have to replace the motherboard as well then you basically have to take your PC apart completely. A GPU is often much more accessible and can usually easily be replaced in just a few minutes.

    • @KuharaRin
      @KuharaRin Před 5 lety +5

      If you upgrade to a new CPU within the same socket, then it is simple and removing the old one and put in the new one. When you upgrade to newer generation CPU it is very likely for the socket to change, requiring you to upgrade your motherboard as well, which requires you to disassemble most of your parts for the upgrade.
      though AMD has promised the AM4 ryzen socket ( currently for ryzen 1xxxx and 2xxx series) will be supported until 2020, intel however is prone to upgrade the socket every one generation or two

    • @Beetleman20
      @Beetleman20 Před 5 lety +2

      the above are 2 very good explanation, long story short, suck ass intel likes to change their cpu socket every 2~3 years, so you cant upgrade to the newest cpu without changing motherboard, then most likely after changing mobo you should just upgrade everything instead.

    You can switch between the game and task manager by pressing ALT + TAB keys.

    I mean, this all makes sense beforehand. The CPU only needs to make a number of drawcalls and supply all the data that would always have to be sent regardless of resolution. Like mesh, material, and transform data. The GPU however, has to draw the actual pixels, which would obviously take longer at higher resolutions. There would be no possibility of making a uniform 'anti-bottleneck' either because every game is optimized differently. Some will be more CPU intensive, like VR Chat for example. Where some are more GPU intensive.

    I've always worried about bottlenecks when upgrading components but I don't know a huge amount about computers.
    I really wish there was some program I could easily run that could tell me what parts had room for upgrades, how far you could upgrade before hitting a bottleneck and where any bottleneck would then be.
    I would pay real money for something like that (if it was reliable).

  • @masterphazon
    @masterphazon Před 4 lety +16

    Honestly, when putting together this new build, I got a little intimidated by the "bottleneck boogyman" cause I was being shown that it'd have a 100% bottleneck on the GPU side.
    Then I realized that's just because there's no single GPU that is up to snuff for the Ryzen 9 3900X, not even my 2080 RTX.
    It was telling me to do stuff like install 3x1080 Ti or 2x2080 RTX cards.
    Basically I bought a future-proof CPU and cannot be expected to get that bottleneck down without some frankly ridiculous asks. Broke me out of my fear of bottlenecks.

    • @brucelez1
      @brucelez1 Před 4 lety +1

      The voice of reason strikes hard. Lots of dumb asses out there with too much money that can be exploited. Also additional GPU's in a system will give a lower maximum FPS in most games, and a lower minimum FPS, but a better and more stable average in most situations. Modern thinking is 1 kick ass GPU is better than multiple ones. (silicone lottery may also make 1 GPU perform slightly better than the others, at this point you get screen tearing and weird shit happening too)

    • @masterphazon
      @masterphazon Před 4 lety +1

      @@brucelez1 Yeah, I figured as long as my GPU is up to snuff (which I would hope a 2080 would be XD), then having an extra extra strong CPU shouldn't hurt. Bottleneck doesn't lower performance, just limits the stronger one down to the lesser one (unless I'm horribly misunderstanding things).
      As for multiple GPUs, from what I'm told, most games don't even properly support SLI bridges, really, making it pretty bad.

    • @brucelez1
      @brucelez1 Před 4 lety

      @@masterphazon SLI was a big thing a few years back, but it just did not perform as good as the GPU had to sync with the other GPU, this took some time as the 2 GPU's rendered different lines of the image, (think you go, I go, you go, I go line by line) so sometimes you got mismatches as each GPU would eventually end up out of sync rendering different frames. Plus the games would need to be coded for SLI NVIDEA and also AMD versions of this.
      Basically pay more, go faster, (within reason)

    • @johanlahti84
      @johanlahti84 Před 6 lety +1

      To be fair, the price of a 1080ti is almost double of a mobo/i7 combo. Still you'll have to upgrade the gpu sooner(probably). If I HAD to build a pc now and there were to option to wait for next gen cpu/gpu, I'd go with a 1060 3gb and an i7 8700k then upgrade to next gen GPU when it arives. So yeah, right now i would build around the mobo/cpu. Anything else is just stupid right now.
