Actually the speed of light (or electricity in copper, which is pretty close) is actually a limiting factor in making cpu or gpu chips bigger, or running too fast.
cpu bottlenecking is the worst thing ever specially when you realize you have to not only change the cpu but the motherboard too and if your lucky not the ram too.

Recommended config as a conclusion would be nice, maybe I'll do that video...
I had a really old system with a first gen i5, and a gtx 650. Then I bought a 1060, and boy I got some performance boost, with 3d mark showing 6 times bigger score, but I was still getting 30 fps in GTA 5. That's your bottlenecking right there. But then I finally got i5 7600, and the suffer was over.
Now you can go for a 1080 Ti and get 160 FPS in GTA V, then you can upgrade to a i7-8700K and get 200 FPS, then you can upgrade to a 2080 Ti and get 240 FPS, ad infinitum.
Like what he said some games dont rely to much on processing power.
And others do too much.
In a test build with a Core 2 Quad and a 660 Ti it's actually hard to get CPU bottlenecked in Doom (only on res below 450p, even on 480p it's still the GPU) but one of the easiest tasks in GTA V (but still pretty much playable).
i was having i5 2500k and radeon hd7770
nowdays i still run i5 2500k with gtx 1050ti

Obsolete CPU? My Phenom II X6 disagrees.

My AMD FX4100 has something to say..
So does my Gaming RGB Grass 15MPH Wind
This is why I spend more on the CPU first. If the CPU can't handle a particular game, then there isn't much you can do about it. Either it works or it doesn't. Most games (aside from terrible console ports) have lots of graphics options you can adjust to reduce the GPU load, but there's not much you can do to reduce CPU load. Basically, you should want the GPU to always be the bottleneck, because if you start seeing lower framerates due to that you can turn off the prettier graphics and keep right on going.
I mean, up to a point of course. Some GPUs just can't handle anything no matter how low you set the graphics. But you get a lot more leeway when it comes to the GPU load, so making sure the CPU will definitely be up to the task is far more important. Plus, if you become unsatisfied with the performance, it's a lot easier to upgrade the GPU than it is to upgrade the CPU.
plus you can always upgrade to a new GPU assuming your PSU can handle it, upgrading CPU however, is another story.
Beetleman20 why is it harder? It isn't just about removing the old one? (Trying to learn about PCs)
GPUs have a very standardized PCI express connection which all of them use and which basically any motherboard has. Assuming your power supply can handle it, you should be able to swap to any GPU regardless of manufacturer easily. This hasn't changed in a while so even if you have a computer which is several years old you'll usually be able to just unplug the GPU and plug in another and after a simple driver update you'll be on your way.
CPUs on the other hand have lots of different sockets, and different ways of talking to the motherboard so even if a CPU fits a socket it may not be compatible with the chipset on the motherboard. These sockets and chipsets change quite regularly and there are often several types on the market at once (and way more than just one for intel and one for amd). RAM can also be a problem, since if your PC is several years old then it probably uses DDR3 technology which isn't compatible with the DDR4 technology which is the standard today.
I am currently stuck with a 4th generation i5 for that reason. If I want to upgrade my CPU, I'd also have to upgrade my motherboard since its socket isn't used by modern CPUs anymore. I'd also have to replace my DDR3 RAM with DDR4 modules since modern CPUs don't support DDR3 anymore, which with the current RAM prices is rather expensive.
Those two combined (relatively basic compatible motherboard + 20GB of DDR4 memory, both from a trusted brand) would cost me about €300. That is just to make my current computer compatible with the new CPU, so it excludes the price of the CPU itself.
You may be very lucky and already have compatible memory and a compatible socket, but in most cases a new CPU is an expensive replacement when you account for the other parts.
A CPU is also harder to replace physically since it's a much more central part of the computer and you'll have to remove the cooler from it. If you have to replace the motherboard as well then you basically have to take your PC apart completely. A GPU is often much more accessible and can usually easily be replaced in just a few minutes.
If you upgrade to a new CPU within the same socket, then it is simple and removing the old one and put in the new one. When you upgrade to newer generation CPU it is very likely for the socket to change, requiring you to upgrade your motherboard as well, which requires you to disassemble most of your parts for the upgrade.
though AMD has promised the AM4 ryzen socket ( currently for ryzen 1xxxx and 2xxx series) will be supported until 2020, intel however is prone to upgrade the socket every one generation or two
the above are 2 very good explanation, long story short, suck ass intel likes to change their cpu socket every 2~3 years, so you cant upgrade to the newest cpu without changing motherboard, then most likely after changing mobo you should just upgrade everything instead.
I’ll just walk over to my drawer that has a plethora of any cpu ever made... 🙃

I would like to see this concept revisited for 2020. I feel like the CPU and GPU landscape has shifted a fair bit since this video was released, or rather it was only beginning to shift at that point now that the standard isn't 4 core CPUs and resolutions beyond 1080p are more realistic for a greater number of people with the release of the RTX 30 and Radeon 6000 series GPUs.
Great video, definitely a fair description of the current state on Linux.
For a good example I use a (6core) Xeon 5670 (1st gen i7 for reference) and a GTX 980Ti so here we have the issue of SATA2 and PCIE2 which after overclocking arent really issues. My actual bottleneck comes from my ram if im operating under 1600mhz my system visably stutters in games such as OverWatch. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Thank you for addressing this. It''s something that many people treat as something that is black and white. Either you're bottlenecking, or you're not.
But the real answer is far more complex and you did a pretty good job explaining the basics.
I have a “blue collar” EVGA 1060 ssc 6gig and was running with an I3 3220. I rebuilt with a Ryzen 5 2600 and Tomahawk mobo and omg my system is awesome now!! That was a huge bottle neck and the exact thing you were speaking of was going on, even bought a 144 hz monitor and didn’t lose any FPS but noticed the difference with the new processor right on bud right on.
I got a really really old cpu with a RADEON HD 7970 and ... graphic settings dont even change my fps
you should download more fps then
Take Battlefield 1 for example, adding a high end card won't do much since its such a CPU heavy game (Synced destruction, high tickrate, 64 players, etc)
DANNYonPC emulators, especially for ps2 and gamecube games are extremely CPU intensive because I believe the emulator has to emulate architectures that aren't common at all.
Except a 1080 Ti is always the way to go. Buy whatever highend cpu you want.
Why are you constantly here leave linus alone
DANNYonPC yeah the processor will do you good a quad core from sandy bridge wont help you you'll get below 60 fps constantly it just fluctuates so much
No Man's Sky should be one of the most CPU intensive games atm, since it's constantly generating stuff (like terrain) as you move.
I got 99 problems, but a bench ain't one!
I saw this video in my recommended right before I was about to upgrade my CPU and motherboard. If I didn't watch this I would have had a bottlenecked GPU. Thank you Linus
tl;dw something always is bottlenecking.
It depends what you do on pc.
More is better.

Actually yes they were. Excel or w/e software they used probably has fps information to more decimal places (which the bars show), but the number shown is rounded.
bladudemovies decimal
Probably 17.9 vs like 17.1
4 years later and still relevant. You're a legend Linus
This video has a new meaning to everyone in 2021
I'm a firm believer in buying more CPU than you need (assuming your finances allow), because unlike your GPU which you can basically upgrade as often as you (and your budget) like, a CPU upgrade often requires a whole platform upgrade.
I’m fully onboard this belief too after what I experienced with my rig.
yep i have this same experience with my i5 4590 paired with a 1080. i got the cpu in 2014 or 15 i don’t remember and paired it with a 750 ti then upgraded but now i’m fucked because i want the i7 8700k and that requires the whole platform (motherboard, ram, cpu)
only on intel side
You’re not wrong. I compromised a couple years ago with my 6600k. Now In cpu intense titles like bf1 I could really use an i7. Wish I wouldn’t have done that. Probably upgrading to a 8700k here soon.
This issue is not as bad when you go ayymd
just go to pcpartpicker and choose the most expensive parts amirite?
LBGST zockt lol pretty much
Here is some free advice new guys, Basically if you are getting slow FPS or bottleneck issues then open and play the game, but first press CTRL + ALT + DEL and run performance monitor, see what components are stressed out, (shown by high percentages in the readouts) then upgrade the most overworked components, ideally all hit 100% all the time.
You can switch between the game and task manager by pressing ALT + TAB keys.
Hope this helps.
This really makes sense anyone owning an RTX laptop coming with the traditional I7-9750H will notice that increasing graphical settings in games like COD warzone doesn't affect the frames to a great extent

We need a ¨coming back¨ episode about this material taking in account the new console approximation for the new tech and how it would affect PC hardware and software. Make it happen Linus :))
Depends on what games you play too, multiplayer games use more CPU than GPU, the opposite, single player games such as Metro Exodus or The Witcher 3 are generally using more GPU. (Ofc in 2019 those aren’t set in stone)
Here is a sure way to tell if a game is gonna rely on the CPU heavily look if the engine is Source or Source 2 or engines of about the same age like Blitz3D they depend more on the CPU for many reasons as they use separate files for everything rather then just having 1 or 2 with everything in them however this makes any games made in them easier to mod (If I got why it takes more CPU power wrong please don't nitpick me I don't have much experience with Source and engines of similar age)
im sorry, i didnt even realize i wasnt subscribed. i appreciate you and the team behind you.
Linus flexing his GPUs and CPUs Ugh I wish I had a collection like that
That CPU shelf looks delicious.
thank you for the great breakdown.
I mean, this all makes sense beforehand. The CPU only needs to make a number of drawcalls and supply all the data that would always have to be sent regardless of resolution. Like mesh, material, and transform data. The GPU however, has to draw the actual pixels, which would obviously take longer at higher resolutions. There would be no possibility of making a uniform 'anti-bottleneck' either because every game is optimized differently. Some will be more CPU intensive, like VR Chat for example. Where some are more GPU intensive.

Lol my friend still uses a gt 210
I have played crysis on that gpu
@@SagarWani1991 at 1 fps?
the whole bottle would be a neck lol
Balanced as all things should be.
Songtronix spared or snapped?
Oh snap!
Is it the neck...of a bottle? That got me. lmao
when you're so rich you can pick out whatever part you want from a bin
nothing holding you back but you attitude.
Literally just asked myself this question... Linus you mind reader!
I've always worried about bottlenecks when upgrading components but I don't know a huge amount about computers.
I really wish there was some program I could easily run that could tell me what parts had room for upgrades, how far you could upgrade before hitting a bottleneck and where any bottleneck would then be.
I would pay real money for something like that (if it was reliable).
Give me a year to enter the university, then a few years to graduate it and I'll see if I can code this programme. Just don't tell anyone else about this idea! Deal?
@@LighterST I'll buy it.

@@LighterST dude I'll buy it
@@LighterST I'd invest in that. If I had money to invest. Lols.
I just realized while watching this that I’ve been bottlenecked
You dont know how much this video help me
Thx
when ryzen processors too powerful and u have a budget so you literally have to be bottlenecked 20%
More like when they r too slow to even pair w a 2060 lol. My 1700x sucks i have lower mhz ram which ik slows it down but still fuck first gen ryzen
Oof I have 15 percent bottleneck with my budget build. i5 3470 and rx 580
@@MercedesMan a 3200mhz ram is 10 even 20 fps în some games faster than 2400mhz
@@MercedesMan Well there’s your issue there. LOL.
Bottleneck 🍾 long live the neck 🙌
#Respecttheneck
O ... K then ...
Honestly, when putting together this new build, I got a little intimidated by the "bottleneck boogyman" cause I was being shown that it'd have a 100% bottleneck on the GPU side.
Then I realized that's just because there's no single GPU that is up to snuff for the Ryzen 9 3900X, not even my 2080 RTX.
It was telling me to do stuff like install 3x1080 Ti or 2x2080 RTX cards.
Basically I bought a future-proof CPU and cannot be expected to get that bottleneck down without some frankly ridiculous asks. Broke me out of my fear of bottlenecks.
The voice of reason strikes hard. Lots of dumb asses out there with too much money that can be exploited. Also additional GPU's in a system will give a lower maximum FPS in most games, and a lower minimum FPS, but a better and more stable average in most situations. Modern thinking is 1 kick ass GPU is better than multiple ones. (silicone lottery may also make 1 GPU perform slightly better than the others, at this point you get screen tearing and weird shit happening too)
@@brucelez1 Yeah, I figured as long as my GPU is up to snuff (which I would hope a 2080 would be XD), then having an extra extra strong CPU shouldn't hurt. Bottleneck doesn't lower performance, just limits the stronger one down to the lesser one (unless I'm horribly misunderstanding things).
As for multiple GPUs, from what I'm told, most games don't even properly support SLI bridges, really, making it pretty bad.
@@masterphazon SLI was a big thing a few years back, but it just did not perform as good as the GPU had to sync with the other GPU, this took some time as the 2 GPU's rendered different lines of the image, (think you go, I go, you go, I go line by line) so sometimes you got mismatches as each GPU would eventually end up out of sync rendering different frames. Plus the games would need to be coded for SLI NVIDEA and also AMD versions of this.
Basically pay more, go faster, (within reason)
Same here I flipped out I spent all this money on this new build. Amd 3950x with my old radeon vii and it says I need 4 of them or 4 1080ti or 3 2080 etc I'm like wtf lmao.
CPU to stronk. I'm currently using radeon vii and i7 6700k. Apparently that's bottlenecking.
I had a GT 1030 as my first GPU. It actually did pretty well in most games. 40-50 FPS on medium-high.
Don't base your build off of the gpu. Start with mobo and processor.
The Dealer, absolutely! they are the heart of the system.
It works either way. You just need enough money
That makes no sense, If you want the best performance in games you want to start with the best video card and build around it.
To be fair, the price of a 1080ti is almost double of a mobo/i7 combo. Still you'll have to upgrade the gpu sooner(probably). If I HAD to build a pc now and there were to option to wait for next gen cpu/gpu, I'd go with a 1060 3gb and an i7 8700k then upgrade to next gen GPU when it arives. So yeah, right now i would build around the mobo/cpu. Anything else is just stupid right now.
Coreflake ! True 1080ti is getting quite old and titan v is just overpriced
