What you need a a couple of window fan units that seal itself when it is off, to isolate the room temperature and equal pressure. Have it turned on the same time with the window AC for a certain amount of time when the room temperature is higher than outside. You also need a thermometer so you know when to shut it off. Yes, you can automate this process. I will install this as far as possible from the window unit and as high as possible in the room.
I install my unit just for the summers and I just stuff garbage bags in the gaps to insulate. I know that is not the neat way to go but it works. The plastic is a good insulator and keeps rain and bugs out and no tape residue after.
@thehahahacomedy -- all he's talking about at 1:30 are some flat pads of polyurethane foam which may be sold under the name of "air conditioner insulation kit" or something like that. The foam may be shaped like "egg crate" material with lots of peaks and valleys on one side, or it may just be flat on both sides. It's essentially the same material he's talking about at 2:50, although he call's it "spongy rubber". It's really, in most cases, also polyurethane foam.
thank you very much. i have been waiting for my super to install a window unit and he is not in any hurry. it's a little harder being female because of that lesser upper body strength (lifting up a window unit is hard!) but now i feel more confident that i can do this myself without having to depend on this character. that you.
in an old dog sears type unit with shredded or no accordion plastic expanders, you can use masonite or plywood one 8th pieces to seal both the storm window tracks and the inside window openings, duct tape works to seal the openings tight, so no air enters beside the cold air coil & fan.
@thehahahacomedy I don't know whether you bought an A/C unit yet, but I was concerned about getting a portable A/C unit because they don't seem to be as efficient as the window units, BUT I had to buy two anyway because of the limitations of the situation for installation. I got 2 Frigidaire 9000 BTU portables, about $320 each, to cool my daughters' apt, and even in a 95-degree, solar-loaded, high-ceiling apt. they seem to be doing well. At least my kids think it's cool. Good luck to you!
Great video as well as additional hints, but I do agree that the title should be changed... Perhaps, requirements for installing a window air conditioner
@thehahahacomedy Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, but I had to rush off and install two of those portable A/C units for my kids' apartment. Yes, they usually supply some of that foam material with the air conditioner, but depending on your installation requirements and the idiosyncrasies of your situation (like having to work around security grating, unusual windows, etc.) it might not be enough or the right shape. Home Depot sells a 3-foot strip for about $2.40 that is about 1.5 inches thick.
Hey David not too many of you tackle the vertical sliding window issue vs the Horizonal top to bottom closing window. Everybody has tips on this, the a/c comes with those kits and stuff but the other deal is where people really need pointers. Get on it!!
I'm about to move into a place with window AC units in DC. Thanks for all the tips. The wooden dowel one wasn't something I would have even thought of.
Great video. It's exactly what I needed answered to. Thank you for this video. I'm gonna apply everything u showed to my own install. The last couple years I've dealt with everything bad you mentioned. Bugs, wasps, rain water coming inside the house and window frame. It's been a nightmare but you have gave me the best advice so far.
hi! i would like to see a video on how to install air conditioner window brackets. i have never seen a video of it being done. i have a bracket i need to install in my window.
@ReGo001 Either your unit is not leaning outwards enough or the drain holes on the outside bottom are clogged and the condensation water is collecting in the bottom pan and backing up until it leaks on the inside.
Do you have tips on proper installation of an AC on 3rd floor or above? I recently had an installation specialist install the plate and AC in my apartment and after showing the pictures to the applicance specialist at the store they told me he did a horrible job. Yet when I called and spoke to the Installation Supervisor I was told different.
What are the dimensions of the pipe wrap you used? It looks like Amazon.com only has 0.5 x 3 feet and 0.75 x 3 feet and they call them "insulating foam pipe sticks." But what you used looked a lot thicker. Is Amazon referring to the same item you used?
I dont have mine out the window because it is a big heavy one - 13,000 BTU so I'm looking to se how to brace the AC so it doesn't fall to the ground. Plus the window is wider that the AC so I get bugs coming in and then they die in the light fixture on the ceiling.
I just had a dedicated line put in so I can add a window AC unit to my room/office. Even though I have central air, the room is in a finished attic so the central air wasn't good enough. And yes, so many people I talk to don't seem to think about the filters on their AC, furnace, vacuum, etc...
Question.. I have new vinyl windows how would I install the a/c into those ?? With the old unites you had to.screw them in . Nothing to screw in on these Windows ..
I wan the windows air conditioner that is very quiet. I mean, QUIET! And I want my room cold like a refrigerator, not just cool, so I can sleep well. I want to breathe the cold air into my nose and my body while it makes no noise at all and that's how I sleep well. Which one of the windows air conditioner would do that for me? I need 6500 - 8000 btu.
I have a window that slides SIDE 2 SIDE instead of up and down.....help? Anyone? Do I gotta find a specific window unit or can I still install the kind in the video?
It seems to me that most of the weight of the unite is outside the sill support. What about an angle-iron support bracket? What about the storm window frame? You must remove the lower storm window One would need to use a 2x4 or 1x4 board on top of the sill so the unit will set on the board instead of the storm window frame. Note the exposed condensor coil which is easy to bend. If the unit is on the 1st floor, the exposed coil is subject to being at the mercy of kids with base balls etc..
Using vinyl tape to seal out rain is ridiculous as it deteriorates so quickly, as does all tape when exposed to sunlight and other outside elements. If you simply use PROPER weatherstripping along the bottom edge of the window's frame as well as under the unit and along the sides, that will guard much better against water leakage.
we pay billions of dollars per day for "energy" programs, enough to provide our life support. in the US alone, thousands of "local" governments take trillions of dollars per year plus theft and commission. they block access to resources to force us to pay taxes and fees to their private partners. most structures in the USA are defective, and the commercial dominators will not let an example of anything different or permanent be seen. i have plans for new systems! - james mcashan for US Senate
can humans drink the condesation from the bucket? I dont got no plants but i got plenty of kool aid and sugar... cool if i make some kool aide from the air conditioner's condensation run off?
This isn't a video about "how to install" if it's already installed during the entire video. You should consider renaming this video to something about using it conservatively.
wonderful information, thanks for the tips. I do have a question tho. I once has my drainage lines in my window unit clog up and someone told me something about that the system had to be at a slight downward angle on the outside for the water to drain properly and not back up into the system. Can u explain that better?
TIM TIMOTHY I am so sorry, my bad. I was under the impression that you did these videos to help others out, not just to show off your talent. A simple answer to a simple question would have been nice, but, not a condescending attitude. This site has a place for statements and QUESTIONS. If you don't want to be bothered with questions, then it is your ego that drives you to do this, not your true concern of helping people. You really should get your head out of the clouds and either dedicate yourself to helping those with questions, no matter how lame you may think they are, or stop making the videos. You just lost me as a follower. I don't need to be belittled by the likes of you. No matter how good you think you are, you're not perfect, just like us.
this should be renamed "how to insulated a window air conditioner that's already installed". he never shows HOW TO INSTALL A WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER (with out it tumbling out a 4th story window).
I heard window units are piece of shit. It suck air from the outside, cool it, and passed it into the room full of hot air. Now where does the hot air goes? also created a higher pressure inside the room when compared outside or the lower pressure, like a balloon begging to leak. And where does the heat that it have removed from the incoming air go? it goes back into the room, man. It is as inefficient as ever.
What you need a a couple of window fan units that seal itself when it is off, to isolate the room temperature and equal pressure. Very good suggestions. Thanks for that, sir.
Also great points .. never knew to shut the vents

*Great and Easy to instal **Fastly.Cool** Low noisy*

This guy is a BEAST!!!
great video. better host - i'll always follow instruction from Sam Elliot's little brother. thanks.

Seen a lot of Window AC Installation videos, and yours is by far, the BEST. Great tips!
this guy looks chill as fuck
This guy is a genius. That is some of the most sensible advice I've heard in a while.
Great video as well as additional hints, but I do agree that the title should be changed... Perhaps, requirements for installing a window air conditioner
You are the best
@hypeddt216
He said "this unit" not "this shit" but i can see how you heard it that way. Gave me a good chuckle.
Thank you!

Thank you sir.!!
im doing one in my basement for the winter so i can open the damper and run the fan in 20 degrees and above to keep it cool in my basement
At 1:06 it sounds like he says, "Now when you're installing this shit..." lol
Finally a video where they get to the point, AND explain what to do outside. Thank you
Never saw the 'install' part of the Installation of Window A/C like the title suggests!
Thank you for the excellent tips on closing off air gaps and sealing the outside of the wing panels as well. Great work!
he even feeds the surrounding plants with the air conditioner

Excellent video full of helpful tips. I really like the bucket idea.
hi! i would like to see a video on how to install air conditioner window brackets. i have never seen a video of it being done. i have a bracket i need to install in my window.
The video is called "How to install a Window Air Conditioner" and it begins with the unit installed.
you sound like the narator to the ol'dukes of hazard show
Very informative video, lots of tips that I didn't know about.
I loved him in the Big Lebowski! The Dude abides.
This guy is truly awesome, thanks for the great information!
Came here to find out how to install brackets, found my friend Dave Mars! You rock Dave!
Looks like i'm gonna be returning my unit
Very informative. Too bad I can't install one of these babies at my place
Thanks! Now I know what to do with all the spare parts that came with my a/c unit.
Great video!
@ReGo001 Either your unit is not leaning outwards enough or the drain holes on the outside bottom are clogged and the condensation water is collecting in the bottom pan and backing up until it leaks on the inside.
Thanks great tutorial... saved my life!
love the information the video was really good thank you
Thank you for this, very professional.
Some excellent points... Thank you for posting this...

Thanks Dave! Great tips.
They suck air from the inside, not outside. That's why there's a filter on the front of it. It blows hot air on the outside.
Hahahaha have an energy efficient summer and c u next time
1:05 Now when you're installing this shit, lol
I said the same thing. Geez. Should be called "How to seal your air conditioner"
Unless your window unit recycle inside air and have a heat exchange outside the window.
Thanks for the tips.

@xXxhybridmeteoraxXx You have to have a doctors note to have a freaking A/C unit? What the hell! Glad I'm not living on campus.
I wanted to watch them physically put the unit in the window frame to see how it rests on the bottom ledge.
I dont have mine out the window because it is a big heavy one - 13,000 BTU so I'm looking to se how to brace the AC so it doesn't fall to the ground. Plus the window is wider that the AC so I get bugs coming in and then they die in the light fixture on the ceiling.
Great info! but music makes it hard to focus
@hypeddt216 He says "installing this unit"
So how do you make sure that you AC unit wont fall out of the window and kill someone during installation?
Hi. Do you know how to unlock, tilt and replace NYC highrise windows for cleaning? Thankyou.
thanks bro
I just had a dedicated line put in so I can add a window AC unit to my room/office. Even though I have central air, the room is in a finished attic so the central air wasn't good enough.

the background hee-haw music is killing me, brotha
1:05 did he say "now when you're installing this shit"?
what if your window slides side to side not up and down?
What kind of board is that you used to put on the outside? Foil Board?? What is that
Question.. I have new vinyl windows how would I install the a/c into those ?? With the old unites you had to.screw them in . Nothing to screw in on these Windows ..

@xXxhybridmeteoraxXx Spoken like a true American.
I have a window that slides SIDE 2 SIDE instead of up and down.....help? Anyone? Do I gotta find a specific window unit or can I still install the kind in the video?
you sound like my uncle rocky >_>
can u install a regular ac sidaways?
so does he say "so when you're installing this shit?" Hahahaha
That's what I thought .
I had to replay that part three times, lmao when you're installing this shit 😂
maxhomes Radhen Currie Arlene Cruz "now when you're installing this unit"
***** yes he says "when you're installing this unit"
GrandPixel he definitely does not say "unit"
does he say, "Now when installing this shit in?" hahaha

How much amp for unit.I'm running 15 amp on room

Omg I laughed hysterically at the 1:05 statement. Idk why. I guess because it came outta nowhere. "When you're installing this s*****t" hahahahahahaha
@hypeddt216 He clearly said : "This unit"..... Seems like 19 people can't understand a Missouri accent.
How about the prep work before you stick it in the window.
Thinking he said "this unit" really drawn out. But I hope he said "When you're installing this shit."
that is a sliding window

I agree that the music MUST go! It is VERY irritating. Other than that it was good.
I've found great handbook on woodprix website. Good solutions for everyone I think
this should be renamed "how to insulated a window air conditioner that's already installed". he never shows HOW TO INSTALL A WINDOW AIR CONDITIONER (with out it tumbling out a 4th story window).
This is very unhelpful in terms of actually installing an A/C on to a difficult window sill.r
I heard window units are piece of shit. It suck air from the outside, cool it, and passed it into the room full of hot air. Hahaha. That's exactly what I thought he said too!
terrible he didnt show the ac being put in the window
