    Oof. I forgot about Stephen (tWitch) being here for this apology video and it hurt to see him. For those that don't know, Stephen committed suicide last December. He was a former runner up, judge and mentor on the show So You Think You Can Dance as well as a lot of other stuff. He also DJed for Ellen on her show. He was one of the reasons I fell in love with hip hop and dance as a kid. I hope his family is doing as well as they can be.

      @@luongnguyen9759 the thing that Anony talked about happened in the apology.
      As for the drama. Drew Gooden did an excellent video on, but to sum it up; staff members were treated horribly off camera. Some weren't allowed to talk to Ellen because she had a "sensitive nose" and they might have bad breath. or look her in the eyes.
      Some producer used his position of power to get oral sex from the staffer. Another was extremely racist. Saying stuff like he couldn't "tell black employees apart". And these incidents somehow didn't get Ellen's attention. Even though she's the head of the organization and their were rumors among staff that she probably should've heard and looked into.

      It's too easy to be poor now and the level of comfort that people enjoy at lower income brackets is staggering. The struggle is real when having next to nothing gets one out of bed every morning with the drive to do better for themselves and their families.
      And I don't want to hear this skin color excuses in 2022 because corporations, including the one I am employed by, are falling all over themselves to hire qualifies POC to push company diversity stats in the right direction. There has never been a better time to be a qualified POC in this country and that excuse can be put to bed.

    • @gordonramsayslambsauce
      @gordonramsayslambsauce Před 2 lety +48

      @@johnfreeman440 "it's too easy to be poor" people are dying, john. I'd like you to explain how easy being poor is to children on the streets who have absolutely no say in their situation. Pulling yourself out of poverty means getting a job and a bank account (which, yknow, costs money) because employers don't pay in cash. Cashing out a check without a bank account also has a fee. Without experience or connections, considering most homeless people are veterans, mentally ill/disabled, and/or didn't finish school, you can't get a well-paying job (aka a job that won't pay you a livable wage for an apartment). Don't pull out the "racism doesn't exist in corporations" because business have literally fired black people for having black hair like curly hair, dreads, or braids. Often they'll tell you to get a weave installed (which is hundreds of dollars to have and maintain) or straighten it (which is damaging to the hair). Black people make 97 cents on the dollar tagged along with the fact that women make 79 cents on the dollar. You are so clouded by your progress you've forgotten how hard and hopeless that situation is and feels, the same way Ellen was so clouded by her success she forgot how horribly she was treated as a lesbian in the 90s. You water down your own bad memories and try to force that "grind" view on people in that situation. It's a method your brain uses to deal with trauma. Mothers typically forget just how painful childbirth was because the brain blocks out the memory. People often water down their own abuse and when their abuser says or does something nice they think "well they must not be abusive, right?" I'm sorry you were in a crappy situation, but in no way, shape, or form does that give you the excuse to push your limited, privileged white male view on people in that situation. I hope one day you come face to face with a mentally ill veteran who has been so screwed by the government that they aren't even eligible for disability and have to rely on rations from underfunded soup kitchens and tell them that it's their fault. Nobody should have to live on scraps and nobody should have to fight for their lives because of pure greed. Anybody who can justify that is privileged and ignorant

    Jarvis, I know that you probably won't read this, but what you said at 16.25 about "I could give you a sob story and make you feel bad for me, but none of that is relevant if I'm hurting you" meant more to me than I thought would ever be possible. My dad has caused so much emotional trauma throughout my childhood, and he always made/makes himself the victim. I don't live with him anymore, and I have the freedom to really do whatever I want with our relationship, but it's so hard to be there for him and keep myself healthy at the same time, and for some reason what you said was really healing and meaningful for a lot of the internal turmoil I have about how to love my dad in a healthy way, and how to protect myself and empathize with myself.

    • @darkly77
      @darkly77 Před rokem +31

      Well done on getting this far. It's hard to go through that and come out strong, because it breaks you down so much. When someone is essentially eroding your confidence, you have none left to leave them. Both my parents are abusive, in very different ways, and it wasn't until fairly recently that I realised I was only maintaining a relationship with them for the sake of it, ie. because I wanted to be a person who is close to their parents. But I was getting less than nothing from them; they were actually hurting me, often on purpose, but sometimes without realising how toxic they are. They felt they had a right to hurt me because they're my parents, and I let them do it for that same reason. But now I realise that this reason was always arbitrary: It doesn't matter if they're my parents if they're a POS. They only thing keeping me close to them was my need to have parents, but now I value my mental health above that.

      @@shellyedmb117 The “I’m sorry you were offended” line can work if you make it clear that you do think you being offensive is wrong. I remember Jenna Marbles used that language in her apology video, but it was clear she was genuinely sorry if you were offended because she’d never want to have caused that.
      I find it odd these days that being offensive is hardly ever connected to the result of someone being offended, to the point suggesting someone was offended sounds like you’re denying you were offensive. It’s like if I flung a knife around for some reason, didn’t realise people were nearby, learned I’d nicked some of the people and they had cuts, and I apologised saying, “I’m sorry if you were cut”. The implication there is that, if you were cut, I did that and I’m sorry. If instead of that we’re talking about being offensive, apologising if anyone got offended doesn’t imply I was being offensive but that someone chose to get offended and I’m sorry they felt that way. I get you to want to know, but that's just rude, never force someone to tell you something like that. (This is copy and pasted from another reply because I wasn't going to retype all of it sorry.)

    She was already done for when she decided to apologize on her show FIRST instead of doing a public apology on social media.
    Most of her audience watch her show to laugh and have a good time, but when this episode came up, she knew that a lot more eyes were going to be on her, not just her usual audience, but thousands who were waiting for... Something! Anything! An apology, a commitment to be more open with her staff, anything to tell us that she took this seriously... instead, we got a stand-up sketch.
    Bringing up something as serious and traumatic as awful work environment on a comedic show is an extremely difficult thing to do, I bet, but if she is so keen on proving that the Ellen we see on TV is the "real" Ellen, she did a really good job at showing just how unimportant she thinks the people below her are.
    I watched Drew Gooden's video on the matter and he said something that I think anyone, but especially Ellen should reflect on, "Your positive experience with someone doesn't change a negative experience that someone else might have had with them." Just because her audience and celebrities (she hasn't harassed) think she's nice doesn't mean she can't be rude to others. Donating to charities is a huge help, for sure, but helping one cause while creating fifty others just doesn't balance things out in her favor.

I think for a question E even ended up saying never mind and asked something else. Also, when BTS came on, she asked them stuff like if they've ever got with a fan (I think it was dated and/or hooked up with one). • @michaelt4007
      @michaelt4007 Před 3 lety +8

      I feel like the problem with apologies on the Internet is that they are always one sided, people will always feel angry about one thing or another in the end, and they always feel fake, as if they are only apologizing because they got called out and got hate for what they did. That's why in my opinion the only way you can truly apologize on the Internet is live with other people there with you. That way you can talk to the audience rather then at them, you can answer questions as they come rather then make a full multiseries out of the apologizes, and any hate people hold towards you can be expressed and you can explane your side on that hate. But the thing about such apologizes is that they actually have to be real (which is why so few people do them) and if they aren't real then they will blow up in the persons face twice as hard. The problem with Ellens apology, even though it was live, is that it had all of the same problems as a normal apology but in the end it wasn't even an apology in the first place but rather her patting herself on the back and talking about how good she is.
