Well, first of all obviously they are from Greece specifically from Ioannina City (as their name says) which is a town in northwest Greece. They are known for playing folk songs mixed with heavy guitars. The folk songs from northwest Greece have this slow pace so they are perfect for this kind of mixture with "stoner" guitars. They use a folk organ similar to clarinet called "clarino" and the other "different" organ is called "askos" and is a folk organ similar to Scottish bagpipes. This particular song is a known folk song. The whole melodies are very familiar to us Greeks because they are embedded in our traditional songs

i was a Canadian living in Greece for a few years and from the people i met, the Greeks love their hometown rockers. I was fortunate enough to see this band at a music festival where they were the headliners and i knew nothing about the band. After the show, i am a solid fan of this group and whenever i feel "homesick" and wishing i was back in Greece, i listen to this song.

    Hello 👋
This clarinet has less keys than the 'western one' is a compination with the traditional flaute.
    Rhythm sections are different
in this music 5/4, 9/8 etc
    ...
    A lot of pentatonic

In Greece there is still music in the pentatonic scale, and especially in the region of Epirus, northwestern Greece it still influences their music.Pentatonic structures and oligotonic scales are a main feature of Greek-speaking polyphony, which goes back to the ancient Greek pentatonic animitonic structures.

Hi guys! You're quite right about the flatness of the "clarino" (not clarinet) and it's an instrument deeply ingrained in the psyche of most greeks, especially in the north northwest (Epirus and western Macedonia) as well as most of the Balkans.
The song itself is a revolutionary/uprising call to arms, against everything old and stagnant, it calls the people to take to the streets, the mountainpeaks, the cities and bridges and raze everything old and rotten. Zvara is the harrow (in greek) it's purpose: "It is used after ploughing for breaking up and smoothing out the surface of the soil. The purpose of harrowing is to break up clods and to provide a soil structure, called tilth, that is suitable for planting seeds. Coarser harrowing may also be used to remove weeds and to cover seed after sowing"....so that a new, fresh and beautifull flower will blossom.
I guess it's an aquired taste, I don't like the instrument, but was absolutely stunned when I heard this song.
Hope i've added some context and no, you're pronunciaton was really good!
    keep up the good work!

It is a marriage of our folk music to metal..for us Greeks it just hits home, we feel it in our bones. Many of our folk songs is filled with pain and sorrow so yeah you have to be greek to "get it"

      Hey guys!
This group is matching Greek traditional - folklor music and stoner rock, with great success imo.
Try doing a reaction video on songs of their second album "Age of aquarius" which is a true masterpiece!

    • @DraikoGR

You should had reacted to their song "Age of Aquarius".
The clarinet is used instead of the avlo. In different areas of Greece you got different approach to the clarinet. There is the avlos, zournas, oehler clarinet (instead of the boehm clarinet with more keys, that's why it sounds flat) and the flute.
The Villagers of Ioannina City use all kinds of folk instruments, like the bagpipes, clarinet, fiddle and the tambour, trying to mix stoner with folk.
