BMW M3 by Redux: the £330,000 restomod E30 CSL that never was? | Top Gear

  • What we have here is an original BMW E30 M3, but one that’s been 'Enhanced and Evolved' by Redux. Yes, it’s a restomod, which means you can’t refer to it as a Redux M3, else BMW’s lawyers could descend on you. It is and remains a BMW E30 M3. But one that’s been fettled in the pursuit of perfection. Which has made it rather expensive. £330,000 kind of expensive. On top of the donor E30 M3 you’ll have handed over. Basically, this or a Ferrari SF90, then. Quite a lot to get your wallet around. Luckily, Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage is here to help.

Beautiful car. Loved the original E30 M3 and a restored carbon Fiber version would be a dream come true. Only thing that doesn’t look up to snuff are those seats. They look like they’re sofa recliners with a cheap loose fitting plastic cover on them.

For some reason, when you get a hot rodded or racing engine built and the capacity is increased by a lot, that's how it sometimes is. I have a car which does the same thing since the engine was freshly built and 10yrs later, compression and power figures are still perfect (although it has always used a bit of oil). An engine guy tried to explain it to me once, something about the bores can sometimes go slightly oval when they're being enlarged and it comes with the territory.

It's a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder with probably the greatest racing pedigree of all time behind it. The market is currently flooded with forced induction 4 cylinders with minimal engineering expertise employed. Its very easy to make a great turbo 4. Perfectionist, attention to detail?
Gauges not working and a lot of blue oil smoke from the exhaust. That engine is not healthy and if you used the 2.3L block as mentioned with the 2.5L 87mm crank, the cylinders will warp when bored to 95mm. Explaining the blue smoke under load. Clearly visible in many scenes. The S14B25 had a different block.
Getting 300 BHP out of a S14 takes extreme revs of at least 9000 and the corresponding valve train. This one is revving no more than 7500 by the sound of it.
Not impressed. To the degree of calling it a scam. How come the test driver detects none of this? Is this a review or a paid infomercial?

Exciting car. However, it’s smoking blue all over the place… And for 300.000,- I expect the leather finish on the seat to be of a higher quality.

Nailed it!…I’d hope so for a £330k trackday car…it also looked like it was blowing blue 😬
I love these cars but there’s a limit….can’t believe they’re doing a £100k as it is, as you say a pretty underwhelming experience by the looks of the latest reviews, all surmising the e46 m3 the best option, and you get a nice one for a fraction of the price …….and last of all you might use it rather than squirrel it away!

It's a litte OTT but hat off to Redux for having kept the S14. Woud have been so easy to shove a 3.8 or any other IL6, but no, they kept the spirit. Bravo. Not bling like the Singer either. All in subtlety. The thinking man's restomod. Nice!

Thanks for the video. The restomod market is on fire . Redux for e30, Amos Futurista for the Delta Integrale . $400K is a lot of money but these will be all sold. Cars in this modern era all sort of look the same and performance numbers are off the charts but don’t offer that analog feel these restomods offer .

If they would've done the build on a normal E30 3 series like a 325i or a 318i and not to an original M3, I'd be far more inclined to doing that rather than possibly ruin the value of a rare car. Still, what Redux have done here is absolutely INCREDIBLE
