  • Based off the Chladni plate sand patterns produced by standing waves over a vibrating plate's surface. This can also be achieved using audio waves, even some examples use speakers. Other examples show these patterns in water.
Chladni Patterns are formed when particles settle at the nodes of two dimensional standing waves. Using the result of the formula I created wave patterns showing a version of resonant frequency in a liquid form.
While not a simulation of this phenomenon, this still creates a fun and interesting pattern that evolves over time.
This effect was created using Houdini.

    Pretty!

This is really beautiful! Would it be possible in theory to sync this with music (in the way these patterns form in real life)? If so, it would make an incredible music video!

I would like to do that. I would just need to figure out the proper sample rate and translate that into the sim. Most of the real versions with a metal plate and sand only sample one frequency at a time to get the patterns. Real-time music might make for just a bunch of noise. Open to suggestions, it’s an interesting idea.
