  • Want to grow loads of tomatoes and to have disease-free tomato plants? For example, did you know that you prune differently at different times of the tomato growing season? Today I'm going to show you how to give your tomatoes their first pruning after transplanting them and explain why this first cut counts. I also explain why you need to prune & show you what happens if you don't prune your tomato plants!

    How are your tomato plants doing? Do you have your first tomatoes growing yet?

      I "should" have had a beautiful array of tomatoes this year, but I haven't been able to do much this year. Good points on the pruning!

    Your tomatoes looks so nice and tidy! I'm guilty of never pruning but it seems to work really well for us here. The sun is so intense that the extra leaves seem to help protect the plants. We do try to keep them off the soil with stakes and cages though! 😅 We're definitely not tidy gardeners here. Lol

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi Andrea. It’s so interesting to hear how others go about it!! My mid-season prune leaves in extra leaves for sun protection, but our damper climate means our tomatoes do better when they’re pruned back overall. We got hit by a flash flood after I filmed this, so nothing is tidy now except for my tomatoes! 😂

      @@NowGardening I understand! It's like living in a sauna here in Southeast Georgia.đŸ„” We deal with lots of bacterial and fungal issues too. It's a surprise to me that tomatoes are always suggested as a beginner plant because in our climate they're one of the harder things to grow. 😅 That and celery...I'll be successful with celery one day, lol.

    Even if this year I decided to prune them because of our rainy and high hygrometry climate, previous years I did not prune them and got quite a large production. Moreover not pruning them doesn't mean let them lie on the soil, although tying them can be rather complicate. However, I agree that pruning makes the tomato "management" much easier and healthier (reducing the risk of cryptogamic desease). The reason I decided to do it although I miss the bush aspect.

    Your tomato plants look so good. My plants are skinny. Is it because they are in grow bags

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Pƙed rokem

      Tomato plants need room for their roots, so make sure your grow bag is at least a 5gal size. Also, you’ll see the stems and branches get sturdier after you prune them the first time. Hope this helps!

    Valerie, I WISH my tomatoes looked as great as yours do. This heat is oppressive in Texas. I don't want to wash out the flavor, but I can't keep these things alive without it in this heat. What do you suggest? Help me please!

    • @NowGardening
      @NowGardening  Pƙed rokem +1

      I doubt you’ll affect the taste much. With that kind of heat, most of the water will evaporate or be used by the plant to stay alive. My dad has had some success in south Alabama using shade cloths this year, but eventually the tomato plants just can’t handle the heat, shade or not
