- Want to grow loads of tomatoes and to have disease-free tomato plants? For example, did you know that you prune differently at different times of the tomato growing season? Today I'm going to show you how to give your tomatoes their first pruning after transplanting them and explain why this first cut counts. I also explain why you need to prune & show you what happens if you don't prune your tomato plants!

How are your tomato plants doing? Do you have your first tomatoes growing yet?
I "should" have had a beautiful array of tomatoes this year, but I haven't been able to do much this year. Good points on the pruning!
@@BrokenGardening Hi Sue. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I could see you comment in my notifications but couldn't get to it for some reason. I'm sorry your year has gotten off to a slower start than you would've liked. I hope everything is ok since I haven't seen you online much.
@@NowGardening Never apologize for how long it takes to respond. Things have gone a little sideways this year, but I will be ready for next year for sure.
I have 25 tomato plants and all got their pruning yesterday, do you know anything about watermelon? I just ainât had no luck iâve been hearing that Iâm low on nitrogen, but Iâve never done a soil test,as always thank you for your insight.

Thanks for visiting. Hope it was helpful
Thanks! I'd love to see pruning at the mid stage and also the third pruning. Happy growing!
Thanks for letting me know. Have a great week!
Oh this is perfect timing! I need to prune my tomatoes! Yesterday I was walking thru the garden and noticed that it's time to prune! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!!! Have a great day đâ€â€â€
Wonderful! Glad it helped, Juani. Iâm sure youâre an expert at pruning, but it always helps to have a little reminder that itâs time! â€ïžđ â€ïž
Oh no! I'm not an expert at all! Specially pruning! So this video came in just in time!!
Great points, Val. We prune often aswell. Better airflow, especially in our hot, humid environment!
Cheers J&C đ±đđ
Thanks J&C. Iâve tried all different variations at this point in my gardening life, and itâs night and day the effect of pruning to not pruning. Have a great week
Your tomatoes looks so nice and tidy! I'm guilty of never pruning but it seems to work really well for us here. The sun is so intense that the extra leaves seem to help protect the plants. We do try to keep them off the soil with stakes and cages though! đ We're definitely not tidy gardeners here. Lol
Hi Andrea. Itâs so interesting to hear how others go about it!! My mid-season prune leaves in extra leaves for sun protection, but our damper climate means our tomatoes do better when theyâre pruned back overall. We got hit by a flash flood after I filmed this, so nothing is tidy now except for my tomatoes! đ
@@NowGardening I understand! It's like living in a sauna here in Southeast Georgia.đ„” We deal with lots of bacterial and fungal issues too. It's a surprise to me that tomatoes are always suggested as a beginner plant because in our climate they're one of the harder things to grow. đ That and celery...I'll be successful with celery one day, lol.
Yes please for phase 2!
Thank you. Ok, Iâll add it to my upcoming videos to make đđ»

Great video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Morning Val,,thanks for the first prune method...My 2 bought tomato plants are at the flower stage and enjoyed the video too...đ
Thanks, Matt. How are the bought plants holding out? Are you keeping the snails at bay?
@@NowGardeningHi Val,the bought plants(ÂŁ1 each from a house/neighbor down my road)are looking lovely and healthy,Alicante variety, and my 1 surviving seedling is also doing well albeit half the size of the others,no problem,it's nice to be playing a roll in its development
They all on top of the shed roof which whilst not being unclimbable by Cecil and Berty and friends is creating an Ingognito protection so far...đ
I'm glad you enjoy the Tom's, peppers and beans and possibly cucumber now and then,it's all healthy stuff apparently....đ đ

You're welcome!
Greetings to you, my dear friend. Completely King work. Fine fellow. Way to go. Only thumbs up. Thanks. Have a nice day. With love and respect, musician Yuriy Saliy.
Thanks for your support
Even if this year I decided to prune them because of our rainy and high hygrometry climate, previous years I did not prune them and got quite a large production. Moreover not pruning them doesn't mean let them lie on the soil, although tying them can be rather complicate. However, I agree that pruning makes the tomato "management" much easier and healthier (reducing the risk of cryptogamic desease). The reason I decided to do it although I miss the bush aspect.
Hi Didier. Thanks for sharing your experience. You made a good point and thatâs that there is always more than one way of doing things in gardening, even if we have our own preferences. Have a good week
Your tomato plants look so good. My plants are skinny. Is it because they are in grow bags
Tomato plants need room for their roots, so make sure your grow bag is at least a 5gal size. Also, youâll see the stems and branches get sturdier after you prune them the first time. Hope this helps!
Valerie, I WISH my tomatoes looked as great as yours do. This heat is oppressive in Texas. I don't want to wash out the flavor, but I can't keep these things alive without it in this heat. What do you suggest? Help me please!
I doubt youâll affect the taste much. With that kind of heat, most of the water will evaporate or be used by the plant to stay alive. My dad has had some success in south Alabama using shade cloths this year, but eventually the tomato plants just canât handle the heat, shade or not
