How Tomato Farms Grew Tomatoes in the 1960s & Why It Still Works

- My dad worked on a tomato farm in the 1960s and last year he told me how they started and grew tomatoes back then. It was fascinating, so I decided to try it myself. And guess what, it still works great today! This could be helpful for growers who don't like starting seeds indoors or have trouble with their tomato plants or tomato seedlings.

Wow... so I'm definitely trying this this autumn!
That’s awesome. I will be doing it much more thoroughly this fall. The idea of not babysitting tomato plants inside is a huge incentive!
Wow beautiful tomato farm
Thanks for visiting 😊
Amazing! Aren’t dads great! My dad use to throw the whole pumpkin outside after Halloween and after a year he would have home grown pumpkins. Thank you for sharing the video and the story 💚
Aww, yes dad’s are the best 💕 I love the pumpkin story!
Well done Valerie! This was a great video! Well edited too.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it 💚
I’ve gotten all my best information from the old timers, they have so much knowledge, great advice!
Amen to that!
@@NowGardening Amen!!!
France huh? How cool is that ❤ im going to try this once my harvest is done this year. Thanks for sharing this information
You’re welcome! Good luck with it. I’d love to hear how it works out for you.
in the late 60's my grandma would toss the tomato seeds left over from a salad onto a patch of sandy dirt. She did it all year. In the spring we'd have our tomato plant. She never staked it and it always produced large thick skinned tomatoes. Once her visits became less frequent the plant was gone until recently when my Mom started to plant seeds again.
Thanks for a fond memory.
P.S. I no longer get a notice if you or anyone reply to my posts so there isn't a need to respond.
Oh, what a wonderful story! I love this and thank you for sharing (in case you do happen to see my reply!
Just started viewing your videos. Great info since I am new to serious gardening. Thanks for making short and to the POINT! 😊
Thanks for your kind message. I hope you grow to love gardening!
Would you try this way of growing tomatoes? I’d love to hear from you!
Very useful and interesting video sharing dear friend have a great day
Thank you. Enjoy the rest of the day 💚
Looks like a lot of free tomato seedlings. Will really be interesting to see how they do throughout the season compared to the ones you started indoors. Can’t wait for the update on their progress. Thanks for sharing💚
Hi Germaine. Great to hear from you 💚 I’m really excited to see how they perform. I wish I had transferred them a few weeks earlier, but I had forgotten about the experiment!
Useful info Valerie. Thank for sharing..❤
Thank you 💚
Great video Val..
A simple idea that would provide a cash crop or food for the table I imagine..I'll certainly give it a try
Thumbs up to you and your dad, cheers,Matt....
I thought of you when making this since I know you were having a tough time of it this year with the snails and such. I don’t know if your weather warms up early enough, but it could be a good option if it does. These self-starting tomatoes seem resistant to the problems my other tomato plants have had.
Thanks Val,much appreciated comment!
Me and Sam my son like watching grizzly Adams (where's he going with this)in one episode Nikon's the Indian is teaching a young would be brave about becoming a brave/man,the young man asks'when you are older do you have to pray as much',Nikoma replied'more, much more, when you become a man it is then you become aware of how little you know'..
Certainly true with me and tomatoes 🙂,have a great day,oh and it warms up in May in England!...
And as a side point,it's not only the method you're providing,(some may already know),it's the lovely story with the tractor and the visuals that make it enjoyable to watch....thanks again Val🚜
That home video was pretty cool !! Speaking of which thats wicked smart. We did that with melons this year tgat were forgotten last year :)
Great video Val
Cheers J&C 🌱🤞👍
Thank you. I wish the home video clip were longer. That’s awesome about the melons. I love it when nature takes care of itself!
I noticed tomato plants kept coming up in my compost using my raised bed. I transplanted them to one section of the bed. I watched to see which ones grew best, kept those--got fabulous tomatoes! The only downside is that I had grown four different varieties the year before, so they were mystery tomato plants till they developed the fruit.
I love that story. I have something of the same thing from these. Since I wasn’t really expecting it to work, I didn’t label them. They were all mysteries when they started coming up. But isn’t it amazing how well they grow when they start on their own? The yields and taste are just phenomenal.
I didn't prune my tomato plants last year and it became quite unmanageable. Lots of tomatoes rottened on the ground and thus, this year, I decided to prune them carefully. However, I have the nice surprise to see spontaneous plants coming out. The same for zucchini. So, I'll reiterate this year.
Hi Didier. That’s great about the volunteer tomatoes and zucchini growing. It’s a nice « free gift » for your garden!
73I thank you with all my heart..
You’re welcome. It was my pleasure
Amazing!
Thanks. I thought so too!
❤❤❤❤ awesome 🥰👍😊 farming ❤❤❤😊
Thank you :)
I put some compost last year in my garden and in april there was tomato seedlings that had germinated, now the plants are flowering and fruiting! Same for zucchini and melons.Did you say you live in France? I do.
Hi Julien. Yes, I live near Toulouse 🇫🇷 I love that your compost gave you some free plants. I have a couple of tomato plants and a squash plant growing from the spot where my compost bin was last year. It amazes me how nature provides for us.
Excellent 🎉
Thank you! Cheers
@@NowGardening you're welcome 😁
I’ll have to watch this, I am curious how a method for growing tomatoes used in the 1960s could possibly still work in the 21st century.
Hope you enjoyed it 😊
What part of Alabama? I’m originally from Cullman but I’ve been living overseas for the last 12 years.
Great video!
Hi Scott. Nice to meet you! I know exactly where Cullman is. Have you ever heard of Oneonta? Where are you overseas now? I left the US for France in 2007.
Would this work on hybrid tomatoes or only heirloom?
I would only recommend this with heirloom varieties. Seeds from hybrids can create a number of different outcomes: 1 - not germinate at all 2 - produce weak plants 3 - produce tomatoes that are not true to the seed 4 - produce tomatoes of the “parents” that the hybrid seed was created from. Hope this helps
