im about to do an axle swap on my M105a3 and id like to say THANK YOU for making this video, it helped build confidence to do all of this by myself. great job on your M105!!
Hey just burned through the build videos. Love the military to civilian trailer build and the use of recycled and repurposed materials. Keep up the good work.
Lookin good , reminds me of last lift kit I put on my Jeep , in the driveway with cracks all in it and 2 broke jacks and hand tools , half way through I’m like why didn’t I pay someone to do this haha I’m getting to old for this mess haha
Hey man thanks for watching lol! Glad I wasn’t alone contemplating whether I should have paid someone to do it haha! It turned out to be a fun project for us. Would we do it again? Idk LOL! Today I feel like I got hit by a truck haha!
Kinda late to the video but recently inherited a m105a2 trailer that I can't seem to shake, trying to lower the trailer profile a bit. Hauling with an 02 suburban, need the weight reduction what an idea on your end? Purchasing a 3/4 ton isn't off the plate yet
Hey there!! Better late than never lol! Best way to drop some weight in our opinion is to do an axle swop. Not much else you can do significantly to shed some pounds anyway. Hope this helps and keep us posted!
Have you had any issues with your axle? I also have a m105a2 trailer and want to switch the axle. I called a shop and gave them you exact measurements. They said they dont recommend cause the axle could bend?? They recommend 59inch in length and 40 in the middle. But that seem a bit too short. The help would be appreciated
Hi Jose thank you for watching!! I haven’t had any problems with the axle on my trailer, all the shop has to do is increase the axle weight capability for example a 6200lb r a 8200lb axle would be more than able to handle the dimensions. That was what my shop did.
Great video, I've been contemplating whether it's worth losing the weight on the low end to prevent it be top heavy vs being able to have tires easier availability. Where did you get the axle?
Jed Massey Hey man thanks for watching! I was in the same predicament but once the axle broke it made the decision for me lol! The less weight is a plus and the easy lube too, also being able to take the trailer somewhere for service and not having the mechanic look at you like you’re crazy saying I can’t work at that haha! I got the axle from York Trailers in Butler NJ they were well recommended and being able to speak to the owners in case something goes wrong is a piece of mind.
@@DIYM105Camper yea honestly when I had removed the tires to do some painting I had to to take the trailer to my local auto shop and they figured out that the threads were reversed lol so needless to say I was pretty embarrassed, and thanks for the info I'll definitely have to give them a call, I wish I knew how to add or send pictures through, id like to share some of mine.
Jed Massey that’s true the treads are reversed lol! I use iMovie to put pictures and videos together and it’s really easy...I would love to see your trailer!
i just picked up a m105a3 and about to do the same swap. these videos help out so much!!! question. whats the name of that tool that you crank and used to help take off the lug nuts off the wheels? thank you!
Thank you so much for watching! the rims that are now on the new axle, I got them from summit racing and they’re the series 52 steel 16.5 x 9.75 in 6 x 5.50 bolt circle. They old rims that were on the old axle were from a M1061A1 Super Single Wheels 16.5 x 9.75.
caguamero1969 check this EBay seller 16″ steel rim / M119 HOWITZER, military rockwell, offroad Wheels, they look like they could work! Also check out the UNIMOG Wheel/Rim they could work and they go for about $250 each on EBay
@@DIYM105Camper thought those looked big. I think I'm going to do 33" tires. Just ordered wheels but wasn't sure on tire size. I saw another one on 31" tires, looked a little small. Thanks. Was that a premade axle or did you order it custom?
Great Job. Way to repurpose materials. I can tell the axle is a dexter but what length and weight of axle did you use? I just bought a 105a3 trailer and my fun is just beginning.
Thanks so much for watching and liking our build! The axle is 79” from hub face to hub face, and 40 inches at the center and its is a 6200 lb axle. Now If I could do it all over again, would probably go with a 75 inch axle instead, using the same summit racing series 52 steel 16.5 x 9.75 in 6 x 5.50 bolt. Reason being just how much my tires stick outside the fenders...a bit too much for my taste.
@@DIYM105Camper I currently have a m105 as well and would like to change the axle over just like you did. Since you've had the trailer for a while now besides getting a shorter axle what else would you do different?.
Hi there and thank you so much for watching! Just make sure that the new axle is well above the trailer weight limit to accommodate any future upgrades.
Hey man! Thanks so much for watching! That’s awesome please share your build. I’m using rims from summit racing series 52 steel 16.5 x 9.75 in 6 x 5.50 bolt circle the same as the truck and the axle is a 6200 pound dexter with electric brakes also the axle is 79 inches long, and 40 inches at the center.
hey budy i love your channel i live in fla and i just got and army trailer M105A2 i need your hel with the tire and rims i want to change them like to the ones you took off your trailer please let me know where i can go from here thank you so much keep the videos coming my name is Julio
Hey Julio thank you so much for watching and liking our channel! Dude I’m very sorry but this wheels are really hard to find, sometimes you can get lucky and find M1061A1 spare wheels and tires for sale on EBay are on Craigslist, they’re the same rims and will fit the M105a2 also you can go on EASTERN SURPLUS & EQUIPMENT CO. and look up TI-120 | Custom Made 6 Hole 1-Piece Super Single Rim but they’re $545 a piece. I hope this info will help you.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes the axle is 79” from hub face to hub face, and 40 inches at the center. If I could do it all over again, would probably go with a 75 inch axle instead, using the same wheels. Reason being just how much my tires stick outside the fenders...a bit too much for my taste.
@@DIYM105Camper but what I ran into is that the previous axles were torsion axles. So there are no leaf springs like yours. I was actually considering going timbren axle less with them. Best part is I'll have more ground clearance. But I have no experience with timbrens and I'm afraid that they could potentially buckle from the weight and rough roads cuz my plan is to go overlanding.
Tomi Mara To my knowledge, Timbren axles are costly and difficult to install on the M105a2 because of how narrow the frame is in comparison to any regular trailer. The frame around the wheel well would have to be significantly extended and re-enforced outward in order to install the trimbren axle properly. I’m running 37” military tires on the trailer so clearance has not been a problem. In my opinion, the sheer weight of the trailer is what keeps it from being really great overlanding. The trailer bareboned is about 2500 lbs and what you’re looking at is approx 5000 lbs plus, making it difficult to drag around safely. Those are the main cons with the m105a2 in my opinion. Check my video Brendan T Byrne state park, Liberty Bell, and aquarium from minute 11 on, it will give you an idea on the suspension.
@@DIYM105Camper what I was looking at is the m1102. Curb weight is at about 1,460 lbs. But after reading what you mentioned I think I'm just gonna get a regular trailer axle. With lug pattern matching my truck so I can use my spare if anything happens.

Roger Evartt Hey man thanks so much for watching and glad you liked it...it was a fun project!!
M105 Camper I’m doing mine this week but it’s not nearly as heavy as yours. Tip; I hear two paint buckets make great axle stands. 😉
Roger Evartt lol they do
I'm looking at getting one but trying to cut out weight to pull with my cj. How much weight did you drop by changing the axels and suspension?
Hey Austin thanks for watching! Definitely not enough I think after the axle swap, the trailer became about 500 pounds lighter.
Now that you have had this for a month, how is it performing?
I'm thinking that with the wider axle, it should have a more stable ride.
Daryl Stokes it is a bit more stable but it still needs the Gas Shocks to manage side to side movement it’s not where I would like it to be yet
