I swapped the wheels with Izusu box truck set. Same bolt pattern with 16 steel ply tires. Which Dropped the trailer bed height by 11”. The dual hand brakes are so nice as I didn’t have to loose them by swapping the axle.
Built a cabin on top, capped by a full sized truck flush cap gave me 6’5” headroom. Covered the outside in .06” LDPE 4x8’ sheets. Drove from San Diego to deep into Alaska and back then toured the SW - CA, NV, AZ, UT, NM.
Tip - flip the lunnet ring over to help level the trailer.
Should have manually packed the wheel bearings with grease!!!
Maxx Powell fair enough lol
They will explode and you will have a bad day if you don't
Oh nice I thought they were dry haha
Maxx Powell if only you had listened lol, fast forward a few videos and.......bearings always need copious amounts soft grease!
Your friends compound is amazing
I can't wait to see your trailer build!!!!
Everyone needs a friend like yours... Good job...
Thanks Maxx - I look forward to your off-road trailer build videos.
Trailers looking good!!!
Wow, nicely done.
Looks awesome dude
Dude grease your bearings before you set the seal 😎
yeah, this axle gooing to scrap very fast. Blue axle stub after 1 trip. i don't get it, the bearings making noise when he turns it and put no grease on it..... even it has a centerhub grease point.
Your buddy has a sick shop!
Great video, Maxx! You guys are very resourceful!
Looks Great!!!!!!!!
Having access to a lift is amazing. Looking sweet!
Looks waaaay better👌👌
Awesome Videos man! 👌
Looks great man. Good luck on reaching 13k. Im subbed
Great vlog
Thank you Sir!!!! I've got a blown tire on the same trailer and can't find any replacement tires. I've been looking into this for awhile and you guys made it a lot easier to find the exact parts.
On a side note, do you have the old tires still??
Nice swap 👍👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Just finished my M101A1 off road expedition build (everything but the axle that is), took it all apart and did rust mitigation, lowered the original top and cut the tarp down, added new grommets, painted it. Complete with pull out drawer for the kitchen , 12volt electrical system, jerry can holders, home made awning, complete rewire, interior and exterior lights, marker lights.
Setting up a google photo account and will share pics
Would love to see the pics, as I am doing a similar build.

hope this works, first photo is my 03 LC, next is the M1101 that was way too wide and now gone.
Looks great
You are lucky to have a friend with all that equipment.
That is awesome
Bad ass bro!!
Very cool.
Dude.... those trailers are awesome anyway, but that thing looks AMAZING with the Toyota rims!!!
Good job....
The trailer looks awesome maxx, I'm hoping to find one of these over here in Australia. I love your truck, it's setup similar to mine
Why this channel doesn’t have 100k subs is beyond me. It’s great content.
Great job and great work. for the next time here are a few tips. Support the axle when removing ubolts, it'll take the load off. Order your axle assembled (grease, hubs, bearings, mounting tabs). Get brakes.
No grease on the wheel bearings?
11:49 he is pumping some in. I don't know if that's enough, as I see comments about manually packing (is better?)
You're a funny dude keep it up.
YES! Pack the bearings first!
Do u have the length of new axel u put in I need to swap mine and remove like 6 leafs on each side
I hate that I subbed to your channel. I just bought a 3rd gen and I had planned to leave it stock... until I came across your channel. I have so many ideas now. Seriously love your channel man, great work. This trailer is yet another item on my newly acquired list.
Dope.
Where did you get your hubs from? Thanks for this video
Did u re-gear in order for you to accommodate the 35 inch tires
Dude the grease!
I was looking to swap the axle on mine the same as yours. How much did it cost for the full axle and hubs? Where did you get it since I’m local to Seattle also?
What size axle did you use hub face to hub face. Also what size tire did you use? Was there an offset on the wheel? Thanks! Looks awesome!!
Did you weld the spring perches to the axle tube I didn’t see you do it in the video
Great video what army trailer was it
You took all the beef out of the unit and turned it into a city boy toy.
Im doing the same thing to my M104 and taking away some weight, my axle is much larger than this one and has to be changed to pull it with my Jeep Cherokee XJ.
Have you pulled the trailer with a load? Have you noticed anything negative? Did you keep the shocks on trailer along with springs?
Lol I was talking to my screen at you guys to heat up the thread locker
I got a feeling this is going to be a legit overlanding trailer!! Much better and fun rather then buying a 7-8k set up! Looks sick bro
Maxx where did you get your dexter axle?
How has the 3500 axle swap worked long term? Do you think I can do this with JK wheels? Thank you
Max - I’ve got a 2012 M116A3 trailer (generator set) that I’m converting to an off-road/camping trailer. I too will be doing the axle swap and going with something like what you did in your video. Did the 6 lug hubs come with that axle from Dexter? Did you have to order it online, or did you find it somewhere local?
Everyone has a cool friend named Tyler ;)
I live in Rochester grand mound area. Looks like your close. Where did you find your m101. I’m looking for one myself.
really videos max! whats the song in the beginning of the video? lol
Nice job. Hopefully you manage to get the shock's back on there . Now that you got a softer suspension might fill a lot better.
+Maxx Powell . You mean like getting new shock's? or a different way of dampening system? .
+Maxx Powell . Cool.! thanks for answering.
I need a shop like that or a buddy like him.
Umm please tell me you packed the bearings with grease ?!
Did you or do you plan to add brakes?
Who made the hubs? Were they from the same company as the axle.
Question for you on this process as I’m planning to do the same thing on my 1968 M101A1. The axle part # notes that welding is required to complete install. Any idea what this may be for?
@@Maxx.Powell Thats what I thought, thank you!
@@Maxx.Powell Finished my axle swap, time for paint and buildout! thanks again for making this one
Maxx, you are always doing something man.. How is that knee/LCL doing?
What size wheels are those? I'm looking at purchasing an axle and have 2 sets of mud terrains and want to see if they'll fit but the guy takes a while to get back to me
Cool
So are those the new greaseless bearings every one is talking about?
I didn't see where you welded the spring perches to the axle. Is that not something you planned to do?
Probably not as important on a trailer as it is on a truck axle, but important non the less.
When is the next trailer build video gonna be?
Nice swap, you should have put brakes on it, they make a dramatic difference in stopping both truck and trailer.
I know I'm very late to the party, but I'm curious what the offset on your wheels is.
I want to do a similar build but I'm concerned about the wheels either sticking too far out or rubbing the inner fender well.
I'm also curious how brakes might affect the length and and how to best compensate for it.
Thanks in advance!
Propane torch will cause the thread locker to release.
Please tell you pack the wheel bearing?
Glad I wasn’t the only one that caught that
No brakes?
Do you have that axle I need it lol
Probably could have done fine by pulling out both bottom leafs
You didn't put that together dry did you?
@@Maxx.Powell I just saw that video
Put a recliner or two in it. Small fridge and enjoy a view.
Reason you having so much problems is you had the weight of the axle on the nuts! You should of had jack under axle! What you do with the shocks?
The shocks were completely blown
So what did you do with the original axle/wheels? And yeah, you should have greased the bearings before the install. Aussie.
Ok so I do t understand why you would change out the axle. Why not keep it with that weight rating? Could you. It just change the hubs to get whatever bolt pattern you want?
This should be a instructional guide on how not to install wheel bearings
One thing!~! You never said how you knee came out? Lot of us wanna know. You did a great job on the trailer. Looking for a white paint job.. I'm sorry, but have to agree on packing grease into the bearings. You might want to fill the chamber again as it will find places to hide.. Stay safe, Have fun.
Awesome
Hey my dream job is a firefighter. My girlfriend is going to college out in Washington and I’m thinking about making the move up there. Is the pay good for firefighters in Washington vs California where I live now?
I don't believe you grease the hubs right?
I don't think you had to do anything to your springs because the axle is unsprung weight, so you might only have to use shocks with less rebound. You do have to change the springs if the loads you will be carrying are significantly less then originaly intendet.
Maxx Powell then it should not be a problem at all. I would recommend to look for a set of adjustable shocks (compression and rebound). Yes they are more expensive, but make all of that up in comfort and safety.
Btw just came across your channel and subscribed (with notifications), because i like what your doing. Keep it up and good luck on your build.
I want your old rims and tires 😬
is it me or did he bend the axle with that stand?
richie wong pre bent for load compensation
using propane with oxygen with the torch you are going to find you can't cut properly doesn't mix right
is that new axle bent?
ah so its bent up to start with and straightens when loaded heavy?
guessing these dont have road brakes?
depends how much you load up the beer/steak fridge eh!
Hey man, I really love the channel! I just bought an m101a1. I'm gonna be doing an axel swap soon. Did you ever fab something up to put the shocks back on? Or are the leaf spring good enough? Did you consider painting the underside or was it not worth it?
Did you weld the spring seats?
Your channel shows me I need to find a buddy with a nicer job! Lol
Why did the axle look bent? lol
They are made that way to prevent it from sagging under load
Anyone ever told ya that without your hat you look a bit like Geazy?
Need 1/2 impact
Umm did you forget to grease your inner bearings? Those need to be packed by hand for the first install.
In need of some help im looking to build a 1992 Tacoma long travel who can send me in the right direction for parts etc for the love of god
Maxx Powell thanks man much appreciated, keep up the good content 🤙
Comment comment comment.
Thanks for replying to the comment that i just commented lol
OMG...pack your bearings!!!!
Guess he spent all his air compressor and air impact gun money on the lift lol there goes those hubs you have to pack the bearings with grease before putting them in the hub
Maxx Powell not trying to be that known it all on CZcams I don’t wanna see you loose a wheel but those bearing deff need to be hand packed and that needs to be done once a year to keep up on it especially since you will be putting miles on it I do it for a living and iv seen just about everything with them also I would not pump to much grease into those hubs bc you will blow the back seal out
No, the impacts not working as it should because you're using chrome sockets. there's a reason why Impact sockets have a heavier wall and weight to them. The Socket weight has a vibrational "Impact", NO pun intended, that breaks loose the nuts & bolts.
There are specially designed sockets, usually through Snap-On or MAC tools, and I've also seen some specialty companies that make sockets KNOWN for breaking loose crank bolts also known for being a PITA to break loose. Its the SOCKET that makes the greatest difference. This is why when you went to a slightly heavier (longer socket used in video) it worked better. A real impact socket would have wasted NO time to working smarter, not harder.
Those chrome sockets are meant for other things, like engine building, lighter duty suspension work, smaller work, etc...
Don't breathe in the CARC fumes!!
Link to the photos of my build, first pic is my 03 LC, next is the M1101 that I had, way too wide and now gone.
photos.app.goo.gl/Z8ezWP6Wggu9aMx33
You didn't pack the bearings 🤦🏻♂️
I know your set on KM3's, but you should give a go to Tirerecappers.com roughly 500 for 35's, You would have enough money saved to afford a spare for the truck and trailer each.
IMO
