  • Guitarist Greg Martin lives at the intersection of hillbilly, blues, gospel, and rock, and is one of the greatest proponents of pure guitar and amp tones. In our Truetone Lounge interview, we cover his years of playing the club circuit, work with country star Ronnie McDowell, and his meteoric rise to fame with the Kentucky Headhunters. Greg shares how he navigated the highs and the lows of the music business, and how his faith has helped him stay grounded through the years. Martin also ably demonstrates his 1958 Les Paul given to him by Hank Jr, 1957 Strat, and Ventura plexiglass Dan Armstrong copy.

I was fortunate enough to do a gig with Greg & the headhunters a while back. Coolest bunch of guys around. I gave Greg a lift to stage on a golf cart. I told him I’d like to get a peek at Hank and he grabs it and said “here ya go”. Talk about nervous while holding that guitar. They even changed the set list to do a song request I asked Doug about. Thanks for the awesome memories fellas

I have heard about Greg Martin and read interviews with him in the ToneQuest report but this interview really puts everything in perspective. Greg has done a little bit of everything and his insight into the guitar and life is refreshing. His faith and testimony about God working in his life was very nice to hear. He is a true tone hound and he is a guy that loves to plug and play. Thank you Zac for another great program!

i AM SO GLAD TO SEE THIS. I did an "interview" on tape in 1990, and this gives me the inside story from what we talked about that night. I will never forget it. Greg and the headhunters were cool as all get out. It was just for a trucking newspaper I was working for.I saw them in septemberish of 1990 when they were going for 5 cma awards the following week in Nashville, they were in Little Rock, Arkansas, and that is when I caught up with them. So, I really like this video a lot. Thank you for posting

Dayum… I never get anything done when I start watching these interviews. Another informative and excellent interview of a seasoned, yet humble player. I now need to go look up Rufus Huff and the other things Greg has been a part of. I think I read Greg's story about the Strat in a book called "The Secret Lives of Guitars - Under the Strings" (a great read if you haven't got it)! Thanks again Zac - looking forward to more!
BTW, I would love you to interview Mike Henderson. I saw Mike and the Bluebloods at The Bluebird back in '03 and I was blown away. I went initially because I saw John Jarvis' name on the bill as well ( and he rocked it), but Mike was a treat to watch as was the bass player & drummer.

I've seen Greg play that clear guitar live and I thought it was a Dan Armstrong. I liked the sound...I once saw him pick it up before a song and he played a few notes and traded it off for another guitar before they kicked the song off. I was disappointed and wondered what was wrong. Might have been the neck, who knows. Wish the Heads would be back at the Bourbon festival...the wife and I would show up in the minivan again to see them.

When I first seen Zac ask about what he called the the Ventura(DA) copy @ 1:25:17 I thought it was what is called in my vintage guitar book, a 1971 "The Electra" model, made by (Matsumoku) in Matsumoto, Japan, imported to (St. Louis music), under the brand name ELECTRA. It looks exactly the same in my book as this one in the video. Everything looks identical, except for the name on the headstock. Also, in my book, Vintage Guitar price guide, Ventura doesn't even show that guitar ever being made? Huh? Must be super rare. Does anybody know why? I bet that Japanese maker also made Ventura? Mystery....

There was band that payed here in the upper Ohio Valley in Ohio in the big clubs that we had back then called LAW. They were fantastic. this was in the early to mid 70's. this club called the Alamo on route 40 just a few miles from Wheeling WV was huge. You could get 1200 people in there easily with tables and standing room. My grandmother was the head barmaid in there. i shouldn't have even been in there but I had a way in. They had national acts like Exile right after I want to kiss you all over. The Jaggerz , Wild Cherry and other big Pittburgh bands. I watched Gary Pucket and the Union Gap sound check and met them at 15 years old in there. Law was from the Cleveland area. they were 3 piece and just tore it up. Packed the joint. They were a big favorite. They recorded an album and it totally sucked. the record company and producer killed that band. We all went out and bought and it was lame. they so didn't catch the essence of that band. Record companies screwed a lot of bands out of success back in those days.
