I was lucky enough to play with Greg on a stage in 1993 or 94 playing a benefit in Louisville, KY. My band was hosting, Greg was a special guest for our set and we just played blues. He had that guitar straight into a small box 50 watt Marshall with a Fender 2x12 speaker cabinet. I remember thinking that using a fender speaker with a Marshall head was kinda janky. Why not a 4x12? I was playing through a Peavy Classic 50. We started playing and he takes a solo when it comes around. It was like standing next to an Allman Brothers record. I had never heard an instrument sound exactly like a recording in my life. It was almost like it was a digital sample because, not only was the execution perfect but it was THE SOUND. I was in awe like I've never been about a guitar sound. It was as if standing, unarmed, next to a real live polar bear in the wild. There were no bars, no moat, no protection. That day changed my life. That peavy was my last modern amp. A few months later I bought a 65 Super Reverb in the parking lot of a guitar show in Nashville. That was the start. Greg Martin and that guitar changed my life. I don't have a 50s Paul.
    Great video!

I remember this guitar at George Gruhns shop. The resonance was incredible unplugged. I considered buying this one. It hung on the barn board wall at George's for a little while. As you stated my good man, I never cared about flame, tiger stripe, either. Bursts are subjective. A great number are just "Reglar".I was looking for a ball busting burst and this was one of them then. I plugged it into a fender tremolux or vibrolux that was in the little tryout room and it would knock the bark off the barnwood. Great burst. Great sound. Woody. Enjoyed this video. You speak the truth. ThanksGreg Martin.

In my gigging days in the 80's, i had two gigs in one night, So the band I was in had to borrow a second backline. I borrowed a Marshall 50 head from a friend and it was the best amp I've ever played through. it needed no pedals. Just plug in and it sung. I do wish I'd got that off him. He died a few years back. I wonder who's got it now.

Thanks, that’s very kind. I assume that was a Jim Rosen benefit, or a MERF show?
I had two vintage 60’s in the old Bassman cab, the head was with either a small top 1968 plexi or early 70’s. I miss that cab, loaned it out to a young rock band, they blew the speakers out.

This is a great story. "Hank the Plank" is a great name. I agree that good guitars "draw you in," they just sound SO glose ood, that they make you want to keep playin' them. The older ones lose some of the new guitar "smoothness" and have just a bit of what I call "grit" in the tone - and played through an older tube amp at a lower, "sweet" setting, will give a memorable tone that will stand out in a mix(or a performance). Greg is wise to hold onto this one.

I was a fan of all three and I'm glad I saw the show but I would have been pissed if it were just Hank alone. It was one of my first non-bluegrass live music experiences and if you were raised going to shows where every single note is perfectly in tune and played with a certain respect for the fans and then you see someone so drunk they can't see it's a bit of a shock.

Great story Greg! I met Ed King a long time ago and he talked about Les Pauls and other stuff. Nice guy! Nothing like a Les Paul and a Marshall! My band likes it but probably wishes I would play my Fenders more to bring down the volume and bombast a bit!😂😂 Hope to make it down to Edmonton this Spring. Stay healthy!! 😊😊😊

Great interview . Greg Martin seems to be a down to earth guy . Except when he staging with those Marshalls . I saw Greg and HeadHunters on a Walmart Parking Lot in Eureka Missouri ,with Prairie Oyster Band . For most of the HeadHunters set Greg did play a Paulie but did several numbers with a Strat . Those Marshall rang out loud and proud .Both bands just knocked it out .

Hank is ecstatic that I still own and play it. Hank’s very generous in that respect.

Now there's an investment for the future. With its provenance, it's a half million-dollar guitar, at the least!
Named by Joe Bonamossa, owned by both Ed King and Hank Jr...
    Maybe a million dollars!!

Gibson did a relic reissue of It, I believe Greg said they had it almost 2 years, and did a remarkable job at recreating Hank the Plank. I looked for one a few years back and found a couple ( I believe they produced 100) for around $8500/$10k U.S. 💸😮I’m sure they are worth it, my playing doesn’t qualify for an instrument of that caliber. I did find a spotless 94’ Tobacco Burst Standard for about $7,500 less, and I play my Squire Tele all the time.🙄☮️✌️
