By comparison current outbreak tend to kill thousands at most (ignoring being meager percentages by today’s population standards) and tend to cause economic problems than large scale devastations. Ibn Battuta somehow reminds me of Jaskier from the Witcher. Always getting into trouble, vain as hell and can't resist the ladies. And sees half the world, meeting everyone important.
He kinda reminds me of a non-revolutionary Francisco de Miranda.
Though born in Spanish colonial South America, he eventually collaborated with English intelligence agents, served briefly as a General in the French revolution, escaped just in time to avoid the guillotine, nearly got arrested by the Spanish (he was kinda persona non grata at this point), bunked with famous artists and composers in Germany/Central Europe, and was made a Count in Russia. And was apparently such a close confidant of Catherine the Great that she begged him to stay and not go on the road again.
Eventually, his very roundabout quest for South American independence ended with him captured and dying in prison in Spain.
Ibn's life is literally a open world adventure rpg.
This is the point where im starting to believe that this "Ibn Battuta"-guy is just an ancient version of Forest Gump

@@stanislawwitkowicz918 oh yea must've been fun
Ibn battuta has real life plot armor.
I'm starting to feel like this is the guy they based Sinbad the Sailor on. Definite thematic similarities keep popping up.
Sinbad was either from Basrah, Iraq or Sohar, Oman
sinbad is a fiction character long before ibn battuta
The info comes from his own travel records, obviously he will showcase himself nothing less then any fictional hero, it like the British calling themselves savior of their colonies and plantation owners being Messiah of African Americans.
even if the original 1001 night date back to 14th centry (same as Ibn Battuta). the tale of Sinbad was a latter addition. but I think that it was inspired by older tales. and by another person: Ibn Majid Al-Omani, who was actually a sailor and cartographer, in the 14th centry
I was thinking of SInbad - the only little thing is Sinbad was associated with Baghdad which is an inland, not a coastal, city. I suppose the river Tigris could have been navigated for major trading ships, but river ships and seafaring ships are usually very different. There must be something missing or did not get translated if the tale was well-known in the region cos the natives are not stupid.
Netflix really needs to get this man a tv series.. I mean if marco polo has one karen battuta most definitely needs a 6 season long tv series
No! Netflix would f it up. HBO is waaay better. They made the masterpiece that is Chernobyl after all.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events”
I have a feeling a stand-alone episode about the warrior queen 'Urduja' might pop up in future. Or at least I hope so. She sounds super interesting.
Could be, assuming there's any sources in her other than this guy. Based on the fact they weren't even sure what island she was from, I'm going to guess that Ibn Battuta is our only real source on her, and we basically heard everything from his stay there already.
We have a historical figure by that name here in the Philippines
@@ryandaverayla4910
I want to ask, did they leave some monuments or documents to back up this queen Urduja is from Northern Philippines.
She was obviously Japanese.
@@ExcelonTheFourthAvalonHeirs actually historian said there is 2 possibilities on where she was from. One in the Philippines and one in East coast of Malaysia. There were actually several warrior Queen that live in the east coast of Malaysia during ibn battuta times. The Philippines one is actual debatable and the Malaysian one is not yet been study properly.
"Maybe I should be an ascetic?
Ah, no. Being rich is better."
The life of Ibn Battuta proved that he'd have been a more interesting side character for the Urduja movie than whatever Pocahontas crap they tried to pull with a fictional, not even in history books Chinese pirate.
Seriously, I'd have rather seen Urduja fight alongside Battuta than having to hear two comedians voice talking animal sidekicks.
Are you pinoy?
As far I know Philippines Urduja never leave written record. The only record we have only from Ibn Battuta, and he never mention this "Tawalishi" place is.
All the movie about her in Philippines pretty much just imagination from 19 century for nationalist movement, it's pretty vague.

I just have to take this moment to say what an incredible gift Extra History has been for me. These short-but-dense series have taught me SO MUCH about rulers, influencers, war, human nature and - especially with this series - the ebb and flow of luck that mankind faces. In every series we see that all cities, all rulers, and all people see times of prosperity and times of drought. That you *never* know what's around the corner for you. And best of all, this channel is as entertaining as it is informative. It is by far my favorite meal-time show. Please keep up the good work, and thank you for everything you've done!
