- I got nostalgic and bought this S130 280ZX on a heartstring impulse without really looking at it... HUGE MISTAKE!!! I should have brought a jack and a flashlight, but I saw it through rose colored glasses. I had one many years ago and thought I could pick up where that car left off... not so much. This inspection has lots of surprises, none of them good!!!

I love this car, but I hate this car... Kidding, I'm all in. I can make floors, and I know an engine guy. I'm actually looking forward to the challenge of making floors and reinforcing the rails at the same time. Comment if you have any suggestions!
This will be the typical more into it than its worth but seems like most of them are. We all get into these with our hearts not our heads. Challenge accepted?
1:34 Ticking....
Like a 2.2L Mopar inline 4?
Jesus Kevin, that's going to be the 280Z of Theseus...
Crush it....
If you lose hope just go look at the "Disaster Datsun" series by Yorkshire Car Restoration
Im loving the progress, My first 280zx was a 1980 I loved it but mine had the same stuff going on with the rust. I found out after I decided to scrap it that there is another structure support in the front under the front fenders that supports the upper strut mounts that was bad on mine causing it to shake violently. If I had caught the problem before it got bad I could've saved it. You might want to take the front fenders off and check the upper strut mounts.
Kevin, if anyone can properly repair this car and make it look great, its you!! This car hit the car lottery when it ended up in your shop.
Please tell the car that..... LOL! I've... Got... A ..... PLAN!!!
I sure give you credit for not walking away and washing your hands of it. Some cars just give you the warm fuzzies that can't be shaken.
Thanks for mentioning Ryan Shand! ALWAYS enjoyed seeing you guys together.
I'm hoping I can get him to come down and help me on some of this car.
@@paintucation i think for the age, water intrusion, its in great condition,..... but im blind deaf dumb,... & a horse... ?/.. wheres my carrot..?.
@@paintucation id be stiking a rack pin in it. & save it. there worth $$$$$.. theres a russian channel.. anton malar maylar.?. he imported a written off bmw to russia. fixed it.. from u.s..
I love watching when someone saves an old cars
Same here
Kevin is simply the best....one of the really great guys in this hobby. I bought his paintucation series many years ago and successfully painted several cars. What a great teacher!
Thanks very much Jeff!
My Dad worked as a Mechanic for Nissan/Datsun, i grew up on these cars, 280z was the best memories, these are Iconic, first sport car i drove, the cockpit back then was like being in a Fighter Jet, especially the Turbo models.
Love Datsun320 we have a 1964 pickup small pickup
280zx....my favorite Japanese sports car.
This restoration/rebuild is already extremely motivational - why? Because I watch as Kevin, a certified, seasoned, pro also has to ride the "struggle bus" but doesn't give up - instead he just goes with "it is what it is so let's keep moving forward". I admire that greatly. How many just give up? Well how many unfinished project cars can you find for sale - LOTS! Damn you gotta love this channel.
"Rust is like a spear. The 1st layer is just the tip."
-Some guy working @ Maaco
That's good!!
Kevin, your guy was partly right...Electricity in a DC circuit flows through the full cross section of copper strands. In an AC circuit the electrons flow only on the surface of the copper. 34 years as a Quality Assurance Engineer at wire and cable manufacturers.
Dan, this is one of the reasons I love doing this... I get cross trained by guys that know things. I had no idea there would be a different flow between DA and AC... thanks for the clarification.
Sounded like a bed we got when i got merryed in 83 out-of thrift store bed
This car is a stab in the heart with a hooked barb. Ouch. Your shockingly good attitude is heartwarming. Good luck.
I see through rose-colored-glasses when I'm drunk. :)
When you were taking that first seat bolt out, I could hear you laughing on the outside but crying on the inside.
On the bright side, none of the glass or plastic is rusty! :) I can't wait to see what happens next.
TRUE!!!! That's a great point! see? something positive! :)
I like to see the sense of humor as you stare down hours upon hours of labor time . Also I too sometimes ask myself “ what is wrong with me “ !!
Kevin come to Southern California and get a rust free 280ZX for next to nothing. Their all over the place, I tell ya! Thanks for the great video.
1974 DATSUN 240Z with a 455, wheelie bars, drag tires so wide you could barely see the custom built rear end. Chuck Bosone, Bosone Automotive in Seabrook Texas built it. Then drag raced it down NASA RD 1, (The road that is in front of NASA, JSC).
Car dolly's. I'm glad you pulled them out of the atic. I love that car. That's going to be a tuff project my freind.
I had a 1980 2+2 Euro spec that I bought in Germany in 87. To this day it is still my favorite car of the 33 cars I have owned. It was a fantastic car. Great handling, drifted well, comfortable and fast. Not the quickest acceleration, but as a euro spec it could do 245kmh normally aspirated at 7000rpm and reach redline in 5th gear (I did once reach 255kmh racing a Porsche 944 from Stuttgart to Baden). Being Euro spec, it had no smog controls which gave it about 30hp over the rather anaemic American version, the gearing was much closer, and the car was lighter than the NA model. I do gota say that the Michelin tires were only H rated but held up well at the speeds I drove it at.
Mine was red, and had the same rims as yours. Sadly, its demise was rather sad... it got run over by a truck that backed right up and over the hood. Collapsed the suspension and bent the frame. I got a call at work by the cops asking me to come to the parking lot, and ... I just about cried. The last thing you would expect is to have your car totalled while sitting in a parking lot. I am really keen to see your car come back to life... if it can be resuscitated.
Wow! What a great story! I didn't know about the Euro-spec cars having that much more power, but it makes perfect sense! My old 79 was an NA car, it was spry enough and certainly fun to drive, but another 30 HP would have woke it up alot. My process of designing a project is to restore the integrity of the structure while different ideas marinate and float to the top. You're inspiring me to bring alot more European influence into it, along with Japanese/JDM touches, and of course good old American influence. I've got a solid plan for the drivetrain based off what's available now and what some friends have done with their Z's, and the structure will definitely be restored but maybe not totally back to original.... stronger, possibly with different seat mounts and later model MBW M-series interior components. I don't want to lose the character, but I want to lift into the more modern eras. Thanks for your note and your insight!! More episodes coming soon.
My brother had one of these when I was a kid and I'd love to find one, but maybe not this one :) I've seen a lot of your instructional videos that have helped me and was glad to discover your channel.
One word. Run
THE " Z BUCKET" SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD NAME FOR THAT CAR!!!! CAUSE YOU ARE ABOUT TO DO EVERYTHING FROM "A TO Y" ON THIS CAR!!! " Z " is turning the key over and it being the last thing on your Bucket List to finish!
Kevin, you have the skill needed.
You have the tools.
You have the connections...
Please fix it.
Kevin, cars ARE about how we feel about them, you know this. Even if we dont have the same feels for whatever car, we relate to the feeling and want to see you succeed... in hopes it means we too can succeed with whatever car WE have those feels for. I literally have a half dozen Civics, just because i like them.
Keep going
Ryan Shand Installed the roll cage on my Jeep XJ when he had his shop over here near Charlottesville VA. I think i told you about it over on IG several years ago.

Lol, you bought it based on the way you felt. Maybe not popular but I say that's number one, if you aren't scared of work and can do it. Love this car can't wait for the next one.
You know that you could fix that hatch! Good luck finding one much cleaner. The early z's already had some rust before they got off the boat! I had a 240z and loved that car. But it did have a few places that it was trying to rust out
Oh man friend of mine got one from a family member once, ran good but there was rust holes you could fit your hand through around the windows. Car was kept near the beach. Such a cool ride. The dash display checklist when you turn it on was the coolest part to me, and the chime was a real bell! Loved that.
Like to see more on the 280!
Great build. I knew it would try to start. My buddy had a 79, awesome car! Brings back great memories.
Right on! I love em too.
i would say z car depot is about to become your best friend lol
Its good that these cars find you - because if they found me I would be throwing them away. I've been playing with cars for almost 50 years, and the rusty crusty ones are a hard no for me. That said, I am enjoying watching you do the work and bring them back.
You might want to consider looking for another chassis and using this one for parts
It's just another car ! I hope you recover !
Has a 76 280 myself in the past. Loved it while I had it. An LS wouild be nice because they were lacking in power. The bumpers look big and clunky to my eye. Its got 3 pedals which is the best part in my opinion. Keep going with it for sure.
That 280 would look sick in black.
EDIT: after watching this video I’m exhausted and I’m not even the guy working on this car. Good luck I’m rooting for you
50 year auto body tech here. That frame makes me sad. 😥. Buy the way my oldest brother in 1970 bought a new ( had to pre order it) 240 Z . What an awesome car that was.Gold with a brown vinyl roof.W.T.F. 🤷♂️
Looking forward to the (eventual) restoration of this car... definitely your attitude has a lot to do with that! It used to be that when the floors and frame rails were this rusty, the car was a goner (unless it was a true "collector's car"). Nowadays, brave souls have the time and patience to replace the corroded parts and make it "better than new" again. These are people who are not me. But I have faith in you, Kevin. I've seen you work your magic many times. It's always a better story when you know how it is going to turn out! God bless you!
Im sure what you,ve seen over your life this is nothing KEVIN at least for you great videos as always keep them coming
I’m in, let’s get we dun
Yes Kevin electrons pool to outside of wire, then when you energize they do a right hand twist. DC circuit's. *They call them flux lines. Went to community college in northern, IL, did a program in electronics. I was an electrician, commercial/ industrial. Like your channel, see you've picked up quite a few subscribers. You will do well, you are very good at your craft.PS: Weres TC, you guys did that Sema build a few years back, hell of a pick up truck. Hell got old, 65
Yeah, your playing with us....
TC and I went to an Autocross this weekend with the Blown Miata... we're still good buddies! Thanks for watching my friend. :)
I really like your approach in these videos. I love Derek for his cowboy revivals, but doing things right is refreshing. I had an E30 that the passenger floor rusted out of and I welded in some sheet metal. The car just started to get away from me, though. When my daughter started driving, I had to get rid of the E30 and put something more dependable in the garage. I had that car for like 7-8 years, drove it approximately 3000 miles in that time, and spent a fortune on parts and repairs. It was an enormous waste of time and money because I picked the wrong project. It ran ok, but it was a 1990 325is and was creaky and wobbly.
OdoBan 5 Ounce Fire Odor Remover Fogger will get rid of any smells and anything alive inside. Also, it smells a lot better than bug spray.
Ticking sound that's wearing on you. As you're standing with a hemi behind you. I see what you did there, haha
Kevin look at your big picture ANOTHER ONE SAVED yes SAY IT LOUD LS 6SPEED with AC SAY IT LOUD
Loving the new content man. CZcams is going to be good to you. Great long form content
Thank you!!! Thanks for watching!
Great stuff going on here👍
Looking forward to seeing more of this project 🍻👍
Those Hatches are like winning the Lottery I never seen one that was clean good luck.
WOW KIWI! love that guy
Can’t wait to follow this project! I’ve been a Datsun guy for more years than I care to admit and am working on an 81’ 280ZX turbo of my own at the moment.
There are good floor pans and braces available for the 2 seater.
Great video thanks for sharing
Can't wait to see what you do with this Kevin!
I've rebuilt 2 79s, your best bet is to put it on a rotisserie to repair the floors/frame rails. As for putting a V8 in it, it's a major pain in the ass due to it being much narrower than the earlier Zs. If you do go that route, a Ford tends to be a little easier than a Chevrolet but not by much. Personally, I'd buy a cheap turbo setup and a Mega squirt ECU and enjoy the hell out of it.
Thanks for your input... 10-4 on the rotisserie, it's the best way to get to everything for sure. I've got a buddy with a 260/ LS power and it's got me thinking, however, headers and oil pan are a major concern with these... so I'm undecided. I've never had a turbo-inline6 so you've got me thinking. Thanks!
agree . there's nothing wrong with i-6's ... Jaguar , BMW , M-B , Toyota , all used . a turbo set-up fits the nature of the car
I also think a japanese inline 6 would be best for this car 😏
By inline 6 i meant inline 4! Honda inline 4 engines are even better than lambo engines 😏 getting almost 100 kw per litre.
Thank you for sharing.👍
Thank you for watching!
That hatch looks like it has more metal than the floor. I had an 81 Turbo that I saved from going to the junkyard. I fixed it up mechanically, but the cowl started rusting bad, and I didn't want to deal with it. Eventually sold it on to a guy who was collecting all the Z models. I kind of want to get another one some day, but the rust. I replaced it with a Porsche that had a galvanized steel body!
Call it what you want, i'm going with Project ShartZ as of about 4 minutes in! So good to see new vids from an O.G.
ShartZ!!!!!!! Lol!!!
Good to see Kiwi
Nice shape for that year of a ride.keep hitting it
You COULD always turn it into a Shelby Daytona OR a Ferrari GTO, I know, A LOT of WORK but, Lots of fab and custom fab?!!! Just saying. Love the show and loved you on trucks!!
Thanks man!!! It's fun and scary, and fun, and expensive, and fun
To be honest there is a lot of car there, if it only needs the floors and rails done. Hopefully you can just buy some for it to make it so much easier of a job to do. I'm not the biggest 280 fan by any means but I love to see things being repaired and saved!
My cousin had one of these when i was a kid in the 80's, I always loved when she took me school in it. Brings back good memories, thanks Kevin👍
He's a very busy man, but if you're gonna LS swap this little girl I'd highly recommend talking to Kevin Smith at KSR about a little bit of chassis work. You're already to the point of needing a bunch of frame work, so a little bit of tubing from KSR will really bring this thing around to the next level with the horse power you're looking at throwing at an already compromised frame. Maybe y'all can swing a deal with some paint work on one or two of his project cars.
Same thing that's wrong with all of us .i was laughing too lol
Looking forward to this Nissan project 🤗
Kevin, if you had to pay someone to fix that car it clearly would not be feasible. However given that you can do the rust repair and paint combined by the fact that you are emotionally connected to the car I think you should restore it. There will be no shortage of content :)
I'm laughing right along with you making silly sounds while trying to keep a good attitude and your sanity as well 😂..this was my dream car in the 80s but I'm 55 now and still haven't owned one so I'm really anxious to see what you do with this one!!
I got rid of my 84' (If I remember) about 2000. The kick panels were flaking, the pinch welds underneath were coming apart, the rear hatch was swiss cheese and there were leaks around the windshield and t-tops. I got tagged in the rear at a traffic light, but the only evidence of damage was the rust on the road (the impact bumper did its job). That said, it was my favorite driving car. I'm thinking your car could be way worse than it is. Get some pans and figure out the frame rails, you would be way past the halfway point. Not to diminish the little stuff, but if engine and trans are solid, you've got a runner.
You're making my knees hurt just watching you on yours
Kevin you should look into one of those laser systems they clean up rust like butter.
Then I'd have no car left!!! Lol!!!
Im so happy as a passion of cars I just subscribe to his channel ❤
You know hard work pays off and if its worth it to you it sure would be to me to see it progress. And next time you see cheis barnhill tell him i say hi
Leatning lots with your videos Kevin! I really like the work you did on Z-sled.I'm working on my 80 Z28 that I've had since I was 14. So it was a cool added motivator to work on mine. Almost have the parts to fix the rust and put the LS in. Another really cool guy I've been learning from is Fitzee from Fitzee's fanrications and Crusty the Corolla or even. Both you and him are very talented people with sheet metal. Keep up the good work my friend! You're awesome!
I understand your pain. I had an 82 ZX for 6 years. Loved the car! But you are right, no aftermarket support has turned me off about buying another one to fix up. So I have an Corvette where there is everything available...
I hope you can save it. Good luck
I had a couple of 70’s era Toyota Celicas that suffered from the same rusty ailments. Loved the cars but couldn’t keep sending the body guys kids through college.
Well, I don't have kids, just cars, so.... Same? Lol!
Seems like most Japanese cars from the early 1980s and earlier had rust problems. Parents had a 1981 Honda Accord sedan that had a rusty trunk floor in Washington state, which didn't use salt at the time. Turns out, the taillight seals were leaking. Was able to stop the leaks, but the car wasn't really worth doing the rust repair on at the time (1994-95ish). Now, however, it'd be worth fixing. A halfway decent '81 Accord 4-door with the 5-speed seems to go for $7500-$8000 these days.
The squeaking is the ol' Z bolts protesting! Love all Z cars (I had a 2004 Z in Liquid Chrome I absolutely adored)... looking forward to seeing where you go with this one! LOVE THE CHANNEL!
You're really brave Kevin. I would've given up on this one after the frame rails got revealed. Excited to see how this turns out!
More camaro and 280z videos please
Done! Ask and ye shall receive.😁👍
I and many others would like to see you save that hatch. You are after all a paint and body repair expert. It would make great content for your Channel. I watched Weird Beard do great work on the 59 Dodge Coronet. It had bad mental around the rear widow and in many other areas. He cut out the bad and fabricate new metal to weld up them cuts. It took time but it made great content for his Channel.
Nice to see kiwi on the channel. I like his channel along with VGG
Me and @kiwiclassics &customs Chris SLee are gonna collaborate on a couple things very soon!!
The 280 Z was one of the best Nissan rides back then, Ya it's a job, but it's worth it. 👍
Having adhd and not being able to focus on much for over a hour it seems i come to appreciate folk with OCD mostly in this situation but wish i could i could do it for about a hour but i would loose interest in stuff but love engines and paint help me understand!!!! Great content guys!
I would love to see this completed. It's worth the time and money.
It’s super rough. But honestly I’m really looking forward to you restoring it and seeing the work
Of course it is rough - that is why it was cheap to purchase. Kevin will be using several of his cutting, grinding and welding tools on this project.
Steve of "Acorn to Arabella" explained galvanic corrosion when he was building Arabella. I never really thought about it in cars.
Hey here's a suggestion. I've seen at body shops they have these universal wheels that fit every car. That would help you get your stone dead projects inside. That a or a winch.
Guni-Wheels! I've seen em. I got to find a better way. or hire a better camera guy! LOL!
Rack and pinion was for the non power steering cars. Power steering cars had a truck setup with a steering box and pitman/idler arm linkages.
I always try to leave positive comments. Nice tires. 😁😁
Um, yeah!!! Tires! Lol!
The rot in the hatch looked patchable to me. Im in and will follow the rebuild!
Floorpans and frame rails are available from a few suppliers. The rust in the floors is pretty typical, regardless of the aluminum tape or not.
Kevin. I just stated watching your videos and they are fantastic. I am really learning new things about cars that I never thought about. Great job great video. Can’t wait to see the next video on the Camaro and the Datsun. Love to see yo u find a Datsun 510 a great little car that deserves attention along with Toyota Supra.
Rusty memories is a good name.
wow that's a lot of rust underneath! Good luck!
Dang, when you stood at the first of the video talking about a ticking sound you were hearing, I thought for sure you meant a lifter from your truck just behind you.
Always loved the z's even the 300zx first gen anyways. And honestly alot better shape than most iv seen and drove lol.
22:10 As much as I Loved the other sides seat bolt "PHPPPTTT" Joke (I'm right there with ya Pal!! LOL) as you might have needed to use the manual socket wrench this drinkers side I could not have Not used my electric socket wrench to undo it. and any and all bolts/nuts that I can possibly fit that sucker onto. LOL. Life's just WAAAYYY to short for manual socket wrenches. LOL. But hey if it makes you happy then all the power to ya. It's your rust Buc....Car and channel. Which I love by the way. Thank you for the great videos cars and Hard work!!
