I actually think most people that only play those games don’t even really think about the broader industry since most people that play games in general do so casually and don’t think about it beyond the surface level entertainment (which is perfectly fine). And if they do they generally direct that hatred toward the game that they refuse to just stop playing despite not liking it. You won’t find someone who hates cod more than the person who plays it for 1000 hours.

I'm going to be honest, I've tapped out of gaming. Because I don't like modern games. I used to complain about it, but I've accepted it. I still consider myself a gamer because I still play games. I play classic, retro, and vintage games. I'm playing through Max Payne at the moment and I'm loving it. There's plenty in my backlog to keep me occupied for years. Replaying games from when I was a kid or ones I didn't get around to. So, no, I still maintain modern games are crap. I'm not going to be a negative nancy and list why and go on a tirade. But there's far more for me in older games than new ones. I realised when I played Spider-Man PS4 and everyone told me it was the greatest thing ever and I was just bored. That's how I describe modern games: boring. Chicken.

    • @Samymaniac
      @Samymaniac Před 5 měsíci +4

Yup. People need to install some older games and just compare.
they wouldn´t dare to include paintless climbing spots in modern games. It always has to be painted in yellow or white for you.
they wouldn´t dare to include balancing over a ceiling with total control over your character in modern games.
they wouldn´t dare to include jumping with total free roam control so you can fail if you did not time it right.
Older games pre 2013 do not have this stupid x-ray vision which negates all the tension playing the game.
Modern games also forgot to include gameplay within 10 minutes of starting it. It always needs to have some 5 minute cutscene, 5 minute of useless walking, 5 minutes of standing and listening. IT IS SO FUCKING ANNOYING.
I literally compared God of War 2005 and God of War 2018 now.
TLDR: Older games don´t think you are an idiot and you are allowed to fail. In modern games they always want you to succeed.
Modern games are a task list you have to get done (crafting, collecting, listening to stupid dialogue, walking 5 minutes without anything to do), older games just wanted you to have fun.
I am talking strictly about Triple A Games. The worst offenders are Ubisoft games and Sony Movie games. There are many more like Square Enix, Activision, Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios etc etc

    • @Fyrehart97

@Samymaniac another one for me is when a game will try twenty different things, but do them all badly. Just pick a genre or a style and stick with it. I can play countless other games for this two minute experience you just did poorly there. You just know that the reason why games throw every mechanic under the sun into a game even when it's not welcome is because a board of suits said, "These games are all popular. Include these mechanics in your next game somehow!"

Which is insane to me, considering that YOU PAID REAL MONEY for that pass.
A timed system like this would be fine (although frustrating and not fun in the long run) for a completely free game, not one that you pay for. If you pay, you should have all the time in the world to reach the objectives, at your own pace. Just like you do in a "traditional" paid game.
I can't fathom why people is willing to pay money for that.

    • @tasidar3
      @tasidar3 Před 5 měsíci +1

Same I haven't bought one in a long time now, it makes whatever game you are playing feel like a chore and ruins the experience. I play multiple games based on my mood, so being tied down to one game does not work for me. The only game I have ever seen do the battlepass correctly is Rainbow six siege. In that game your pass doesn't end at the end of the season, you have the choice to activate whichever battlepass you want and progress through it at your own pace, so there is literally no FOMO. In a full price game there should be no FOMO imo.
Plus whatever happened to earning and unlocking challenges that reward you with cosmetics? Now everybody has all the same shit, that doesn't show off your skill level or how much you have played. The older Halo games used to do this really well with armor sets that made you stand out as a really good player.

My tastes have evolved over the years from action adventure to RTS to FPS to Point and Click adventures to farm sim life games.. I love a good AAA adventure like Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted or Tomb Raider, but these days I like the slower pace of cosy games like Animal Crossing, A Short Hike, Stardew Valley or Ooblets.
One of my most loved games is the delightful little puzzle game Assemble with Care. It has such a lovely story, chunky tangible interactions and gorgeous art style😍
Being able to dip in and out of so many different stories and styles is so rewarding. The sheer variety these days means more and more of my friends and family who would never have considered themselves gamers, now play games regularly😊

It also being done to games that aren't necessarily poor, but just average or modestly okay, and they also become the targets of undue criticism. I've recently been playing the Avatar game, which is surprisingly decent. But because it's a Ubisoft game, it's an easy target because of their track record. The tendency among content creators to hastily criticize it and focusing only on the negative aspects, often for the sake of views totally skews public perception and overlooks the potential enjoyment some players might find in an Avatar game. It's hard to detect where the line between genuine criticism and sensationalism becomes blurred. Also, Chicken and Happy New Year.

For me it's also just an inherent trait of the internet where nuance is swept under the rug and only the extremes get any sort of engagement. You either love or hate, having the audacity to enjoy something yet point out faults will draw out some zealous followers whereas vice versa will have a similar effect.
Ubisoft titles aren't anything special since they recycle formulas from other titles, but they are usually pretty enjoyable to sink time into and have a decent amount of content (minus the checklist activities). They're perfectly serviceable titles and for the most part don't suffer extreme bugs or glitches apart from the now infamous launches of some previous titles.
Not everything is GOTY material, and that's ok, so long as the game works and you enjoy you're time with it, then go crazy, just don't support the crappy practices that have been normalised during the past few years.

It definitely made me wish that they would broaden their horizons a bit.

I think the problem starts when people fail to recognize that "liking" and "finding it good" are subjective concepts. People are used to communicating these concepts as if they were absolute, and due to the lack of analysis of their own speech, they begin to believe it.
There are no "Bad Games". There are games that became popular because several individuals generated their individual negative opinions about games.
This also happens the other way around, when games are widely known for being good, or when developers are worshipped. (Rockstar, Team Silent, Shinji Mikami, Hideo Kojima...)
This non-individual view on how interesting a game is, how good it is and how much you like it is what generates this shitty content about "THE WORST GAME OF 2023" "MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME OF 2023".
If each individual constructed their individual opinions with an open mind, without creating expectations, without creating the prophecy of self-fulfillment, there would be a better video game community.
one more thing: Spoiler-free analysis videos are cancer. See: If you watch the video before playing the game (that's why you value spoiler-free content) you are creating expectations and precepts of the game before playing it. And if you've already played the game and are watching the review, you don't need it to be spoiler-free.
Metacritic is cancer. Rotten Tomatoes is cancer. The only valid rating is your own.
The only valid source of game suggestions is the interest your brain generates when exposed to these games. Or of course, the suggestion of close friends who you trust the good taste.
Reviews have created a false impression that it is possible to know what you are going to play before you play. This is not true. You will buy expensive games that you won't like. This is natural. That's how things work.

A lot of us are struggling with the idea that we once loved something and now we don't. Music, films, games, books - it doesn't really matter. Some of us learn to love these things when we are very young, and as we grow we move beyond them. But it's hard to accept that you might simply have more demands than the medium can possibly meet.

This happens in other communities too, in film related communities for example there will be someone with fair criticism towards blockbusters and someone in the replies will be like "Movies suck nowadays, everything is MCU garbage, back in my day we had good movies like the Godfather" and it's really obvious that they don't follow films at all and just want to talk for the sake of talking.
I personally don't think there's anything wrong with talking at length about bad games or bad movies, it's interesting analysis and it's often entertaining how bad they are. The problem is when people who don't know what they're talking about see that and try to spin it into a narrative that they are not qualified to make. Also chicken is pretty good

I think one of the things you're discounting is how licensing agreements work. Oftentimes agreements will have a clause that will revert the IP back to the original owner if the publisher sits on it for too long and does nothing with it. Oftentimes studios will realize this at the last minute and instead of allowing the IP to revert back to the original owner, they'll crap out something that's terrible simply so they can hold on to the IP longer. This has happened with the Wheel of Time on more than one occasion (although the most recent iteration just seems like a steaming pile of crap, not a last minute attempt to keep the IP).
So it may not be "CZcamsrs talk about bad games, so studios make bad games because it's free marketing." In fact, if you look at their sales (which is the only thing they really care about in the end) for Kong and Gollum, there's no way this is a viable tactic. People aren't buying games on the anti-recommendation of their favorite CZcamsrs. They're passing them by, which means that there's no money being made by these studios.

IP rights are a cancer. but so are creatives who are so insecure about making their own IP that they would rather slave away on a doomed game just to help some corpos hold onto IP rights. specifically, the creatives with executive control, like directors and stuff. it's saddest for the lower rung programmers and animators, who might get a permanent stink on their resume from then on, and they usually don't really have a choice if their employer picks up one of these turds. then there are the freelancers who get sucked in, altho i think they at least have the freedom to choose which projects to contribute to and can ignore turds if they do their research? but sometimes work is work and u gotta just kill your passion a little in exchange for food on the table.
which brings me to the real point: dying passion. if art loses its soul, then all that's left is crap, intentional or potentional or chicken.
we can't expect gamers/consumers to behave rationally without real motivation. i enjoy some of these f2p time wasters but i personally NEVER spend a cent on microtransactions. once an f2p game hits some sorta paywall, i usually quit. if i'm in some sorta guild, i would even encourage people to move on and find a less soul-sucking game to enjoy. but my personal advocacy is simply insufficient. we need a coordinated movement, a consumer's guild of sorts. something like a best practices bureau for gamers, who can police the industry with the power of full transparency and genuine testimonials. steam has done quite a bit; but they are corporate after all and their values do not 100% align with the interests of gamers.

Answer is simple: negativity grabs more attention than positivity.
But really, one big thing that I definitely have noticed is gamers and journalists who feel the need to white knight devs who work for predatory companies.
They will say on one breath they hate these practices, but will excuse engaging with them because “the poor devs” when it’s usually these devs who create those predatory problems.
The industry is easily the most anti consumer industry out there and it’s gotten to a point where, even when I want to play a game, I refuse due to how terrible they treat the consumers (Bungie and Destiny is my prime example).
Gaming is the only industry I can think of where the makers feel they can sell a broken product but still expect people to buy it with the promise they may fix it within a year or two because “making games is hard”.
Making a good product is hard regardless of what it is…it’s no excuse to sell a broken product and gamers are so dumb that they will still excuse devs who do this.
Honestly, I used to be someone who bought new games all the time to be part of the “zeitgeist” and talk about the game when it comes out…but with them being broken, incomplete or in some cases soulless, I’ve stopped buying them on release and wait until they are “fixed” or complete with all DLC before I buy it.
Exceptions are Monster Hunter or indie games that are priced right.

I'm not too chicken to admit I really felt disappointed by a few major games I'd been looking forward to, which get a weird amount of praise anyway - glad it's just me, I guess. But I've felt the same for a while, that people who think gaming is a dying art just don't play that many indie games, they're too wrapped up in publisher names and IPs that broke big decades ago and kept getting milked after their prime. You just have to look around and figure out what's good. I'm always finding new gems, every other day. There are TOO MANY good video games.
To hear anyone say there aren't that many good games anymore, my gut instinct is to yell at them to pull their head out of their fart pocket, but when I think about it I just feel sad for them and wanna recommend them my whole library of games from the last 7 years - we are in a freaking golden age. I loved the 2000's as much as anyone who was gaming in that era, but to let that fixation on the past stop you from experiencing another era of greatness is such a waste of time and energy. Find something you enjoy, life is too short for anything else.

It's because when gamers start being too positive, the corpos start getting more predatory. If yt and tt have taught us anything in the last 7 years it's that a toxic positivity culture is easy to cultivate.

I grew up in the birth of video games you cant beat what the game industry was and can reapect the inovation and evolution of what gaming is, but it has become a little greedy, especially with talks of not owning games and only subcribing to them sees the industry in the wrong direction.

I think music in video games is an art form that you can't find anywhere else, I've listened to so much music in the past 5 years and the highlights are FROM GAMES.
Genuinely there were very few soundtracks that I didn't like I actually have a playlist of them and of the 1.3k songs on that playlist, around 800 are from games I've either played, or heard of because of their music.
To have an entire section of entertainment, DOMINATING in so many avenues is ACTUALLY amazing. I won't say games do everything perfectly or better than others, but I will say; if you wanted to, and a lot do, your entertainment could solely come from gaming, and you wouldn't be missing out.

15:36 the devs who made this map should do a game called Inside The Labyrinth, which is like a puzzle solving exploration game inside the Labyrinth from the old 80s movie with David Bowie. With like every action you make in the game leads you to a different path so there is so many different outcomes of where you end up in that wonderful and bizarre world.
I could just imagine there being this big conflict going on within that world, The Great Goblin War with tensions high and militant goblins gearing up for this big war of half breaking free from the goblin king to go solo and the others fighting to stay loyal to him. But that's like going on in the outskirts of your journey of trying to find your missing brother and get home.

Well 9 if you count the Super Mario RPG remake, which I'm really enjoying so far. Those games are Spider-Man 2, Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and RE4 Remake, all of which were incredible and some pretty cool indie games like Lunark, Teslagrad 2, Clive n' Wrench, and Gunbrella. I do want to play Turbo Overkill and Pizza Tower though. Hopefully, they'll get a console release soon. I also want to play stuff like Alan Wake II and Cookie Cutter down the line. Happy New Year and Chicken!

I've never bought a Call of Duty game , never purchased a battle pass and only spent money buying three csgo skins . Pre-ordering is for slovenly dupes.
Different angle- I don't play a lot of games-
    For long.
They are shit. Mostly shit. Deeply shit.
Shit has always wafted around- it's the concentration that changes.
There's a plentiful bounty of worthy attention getters, to saturate a discerning attention span- but come on-
The production line of mainline games, now, is a tasteless runaway train with broken breaks.
It hasn't time to pause to ponder to aspire on that Triple-A roster.
    This beast breaks for nobody.
    Design? Pfft. Vision? Lol!
    Crappola having never been absent;
there's never been so much passionless studio coin, crammed into so much artlessly spectacular bullshit- as there is now.
And it's a ubiquitous condition. Only a few are making games like they have a brain for consumers to have a brain and a shit to give.
Nintendo? From Soft? Who else that aren't many?
The rot multiplies in Indie, owing to barrier, but so does the fruit.
I venture curiously and solemnly into most triple-a today, expecting to have my eyes glaze over within the hour.
Horizon and Avatar? The same brand of spectacle soaked snore.
The Ubisoft brand is a name soporific to hear at this point.
Oh noesss iz awl uz Fifa and CoD boiz with our uninformed critics.
Yeah, as if they aren't just the nucleus of the modern disease of normie harvesting.
It's more excavation than ever. But near* the only gems now, is to go mining in indie.
It's too spread around and dug in for another Atari crash.
Not even The Sun is too big to fizzle.

Really enjpyed hearing this. It is true that more light is shed on the negative than the positive and I hope that this trend doesn't become the norm. 2024 is already heating up with thier set of negatives in the gaming indisutry but hopefully we can see past them. Parts of the industry are doing their best to make us look but hopefully in time less people ar paying attention to them.

  • @shabadooshabadoo4918
    @shabadooshabadoo4918 Před 5 měsíci +1

it's not an issue with fake gamers. its that there are different perspectives on the same topic. You don't have to like all games to be a gamer. So if the games you generally like are shit then gaming is shit for you.
You can cherry pick the good games and say GAMING IS BETTER THAN EVER. or cherry pick the bad ones and say GAMING IS SHIT. In general I think general opinion on video games is low right now because a lot of the series that have always had successful releases (the ones people look forward to the most) are now releasing flop after flop. Often with so many errors and glitches its like they werent even tested one time.
But yes there are some good games right now. Kirby Forgotten Kingdom I think it was called, Mario Odyssey, Elden Ring, Sekiro i think a lot of people liked, BattleBit.
Plus gaming appeals to a huge age range now which wasn't as much of a thing before. A lot of us remember the old days of gaming with rose tinted glasses (at no fault of our own really), games weren't as accessible and you could only pick from the 20 or so games on the store shelf at one time and maybe your parents buy you 5 or 8 of them over a couple birthdays, so you got the 8 very best games of that generation. and they always worked when you took them home and played them, no errors or crashes at least on console. Now if you look back at that consoles catalogue you will see like 3000 games came out and you owned 8 or 20. A lot of them never made it to store shelves or were sold in other countries or whatever the case may be and they just werent an option.
Now if 3000 games come out, then you can go on steam or whatever and play all 3000, but the best 8 still stand above the rest, but that feels like a much smaller success % now because you have so many options.
But the thing i think a lot of people forget is you can always go backwards and play the games of old and they are still masterpieces, except for a lot of mmo's or server based games.
MMO and multiplayer survival games are huge genres and have had really no kings in recent years that just appeal to 80%+ of their audiences.

Just over 1min in, by "all games" they mean AAA titles - It's really not that complicated. Yeah, it's reductive but I think you know exactly what they mean and are pretending to not understand. Noticing the increase of monetization and predatory marketing behavior in AAA titles doesn't mean someone "doesn't like video games" lol what an insufferable perspective. Ethics in game design is something I've been thinking a LOT about. On top of the abuses and shortcuts in the industry, the lack of ethical accountability scares me because there is no entertainment medium that is more tied into how the audience develops habits than game design. Literally, games train behaviors into people - and originally, that's actually what games and sports were for.
This is a great video, and I thank you for starting this conversation.
