First inning, first and third, no outs, Twins more than willing to give up a run on a GDP, but Newmie spots Willie Wilson with a late break and throws home, almost beaning Blyleven in the process. Never seen anything like that, before or since. That last regular season home game was effectively the beginning of the magical '87 postseason.

    When the Twins defeated the Tigers and the Cardinals in 1987, they both began long playoff droughts. Tigers didn;t return to the playoffs until 2006, that same year the Cardinals finally won the World Series again.
    Where in 1991, after the Twins defeated the Blue Jays and Braves, they both ended up having great futures. The Blue Jays won the next 2 world series's, and the Braves would make the playoffs for the next several years straight, including 1 world series title and 4 more appearances.

    • @MGAF688
      @MGAF688 Před 5 lety

      Exactly. Darrell Evans picked-off showed the Tigers who was in charge. It sucked the momentum away from Detroit at a moment when the Tigers might have evened up the series at 2 games each, stormed back in Game 5 to lead the series and then put it away in Game 6. Instead, Evans made a mistake and it cost Detroit.

    • @ADEAL918
      @ADEAL918 Před 3 lety

      @@MGAF688 it’s also probably a major reason why Gaetti was the series MVP instead of Brunansky who had the best offensive numbers for the Twins in the series. Brunansky batted .417 with I think 8 or 9 RBI’s, Gaetti was at .300 with I think 5 RBI’s, but he was more responsible for big momentum shifts than Brunansky was. The two home runs in Game 1, making the Twins really believe they could actually beat the Tigers, and then that pickoff right as the Tigers were threatening to even up the series.

      John Doe that play is probably the deciding factor for why Gaetti got the nod for series MVP instead of Brunansky, whose offensive numbers for the series were a head above Gaetti's (.412 to .300, 12 runs produced to 8, 2 HR's for both) but that pickoff play was such a turning point, as the Tigers were really threatening to shift the whole momentum of the series at that moment, that this play in combination with Gaetti's slightly lower but still impressive offensive production put him over Brunansky for greatest "value" to the team in the series.

      Yeah, the Metrodome won games 1, 2, 6, and 7, but couldn't put the same result for Busch or Fulton County. The only reason the Twins won either was because they had home field advantage, if they went in 1986 and 1990, they'd have lost 4-3, instead of winning 4-3.

    Interesting connection from '87 to '91. So Doyle Alexander, the pitcher the Twins beat twice in the playoffs, had come to the Tigers in a deadline trade from the then-last-place Braves. Guess who the Braves got for him?! Answer...a 20-year-old pitching prospect by the name of.....JOHN SMOLTZ!! Bet the Tigers regretted that one later on!

    I was very disappointed with baseball this year the 1987 Minnesota Twins let's face fact they were lucky if they had played in Detroit's division they would have finished in 5th place and not have even made the playoffs and had only the 8th best record in all of baseball what a shame that they were allowed to have home-field advantage in the American League Championship and the World Series but because of that baseball change that rule you have to admit the twins had a whole lot of luck and everything was working on their side that year 💩💩💩💩💨 👬 twins = 👎
