    I used the other way for so long but I think the clean look without the cross on the back is the way to go. I just love how it looks! Thank you for this. I am one of the only students in my shotokan dojo to tie it this way, other than my brother who I showed this video! Even my Sensei uses the other way. I wonder if he ever noticed I changed how I tie my belt😂

    Thank you for the video. Really nice that you have filmed from above. It seem to be two ways of tying the obi in the Shotokan tradition. The one with the belt crossed behind the back, and the one you are showing with no cross. I have met old Shotokan senseis that believe it's wrong to tie the obi with no cross, and Soke Hirukazu Kanazawa also shows it with the cross, in a video. So does Jesse Enkamp, that are comitted to Okinawan traditional karate. I have also met senseis that think your way is the only way to tie a belt. I get really confused here. But I guess its OK to tie the belt in both ways. What do you think?

      Adding on, tie according to how your sensei tie it. Else it may be an eyesore for your sensei as he or she is doing your grading.

    I love your videos and share them with my students all the time. I was taught to tie the belt the same way, but reversed... left over right, then right over left. Obviously, the knot is reversed, but it is still a square knot. I have seen a lot of people do it this way as well. Is there a reason it should be one way instead of the other?

    Thanks for this video. Can you make a video about the embroidery of the belt? What should there be? The style, your name, your sensai's name? Does the colour of the embroidery have a meaning? What is the difference between cotton, satin and silk?
    Would be nice to know how it is in Japan.

    Thanks for the video regarding how to tie the belt. But i am totally disagree with the method shown in the video. Belt meant to support your back and not to support your Gi. The belt should always crossed at your back mid point hence to support your back. This create a broaded area on you back. Just like a weight lifters using a weight lifting belt. 40 years in karate. 4th Dan Black belt. Practicing shotokan and Shorin Ryu style

    I see alot of people wrap the bekt around themselves like you do. I put the midpoint on my stomach and wrap it around to the front again. They both end the same way, but I feel that the way you wrap is a little confusing. Is there a reason why you wrap it that way or is it just preference.

    • @KarateDojowaKu

    • @sarachen7478
      @sarachen7478 Před 4 lety

      I think if you do it that way you end up with a cross on the back because when you cross the two ends behind you they can't overlap completely.

    Kind of??? We start with the middle of the belt at our belly button go around back and come forward, cross the ends /tips and tie just like you did in a square knot. Belt ends are equal length for equality. Not one longer and the other shorter but for equality.
