    A perfect exercise to develop this physical dynamic is the opening movement to many of your forms, the double lower punch. It is used to develop what the Chinese Fujian boxing calls "Dip Gwat Gun", often translated as "rib power". Expand the rib cage, then, when doing the double thrust, feel the force starting from between the shoulder blades and STRAIGHTEN the arms forcefully with a sudden contraction of the abdominal muscles, as if you're a balloon and you are being squeezed so that the air is being forced into the arms. Eventually, do this in each of your punches, often coupled with "sinking", that is, a corresponding dropping of the body weight into the blow.

    I seem to be a year late on this video but I'd like to add some context to people concerned with the lat = pulling only. The point of karate/eastern martial arts, as I understand it, is to use the whole body and ground to generate power. The role of the torso is to be an energy conductor from the leg/hip driving into the floor and the end of the fist.
    Plugging "power leaks" and losing the least amount of energy from the ground the your first is the proper role of the torso and upper body. This is how both weightlifting and powerlifting (bench is a weird exception because it isn't natural) work.
    The PRIME mover of the body is basically the hips, or in lifting: the posterior chain. Everything else is attempting to carry the energy forward. Seen from this POV, the lats are exceptionally important in keeping the torso and shoulder stable enough to properly conduct the energy from the legs and hips.

    Anatomically the lats are actually working when you pull the punch back, the seratus anterior is the on that activet when you punch

    push ups are not a lats based exercise it is a chest based on also doing bodyweight row is more better and pull ups too

      @@brucele2776 the video doesn't detail the proper use of lats. The lats are pull muscles meaning they are used to produce motion with concentric contraction. They can be used during a push but with eccentric contraction, and only for support/shock absorbtion. In the context of a punch that would only be at the moment of impact to prevent recoil and harden the body, but not as moving action. In the case of blocks, uchi uke, the muscle Can be used with pull motion (concentric). While the video is not wrong the distinction between concentric/ eccentric and how to use it should be made.       @@brucele2776 hi, I have commented asking his viewpoint on those details, I'd be glad to read what he can add. My comment was not a critic of the author's work. As I said the content, while usefull and not wrong, leaves some usefull details out regarding eccentric/concentric contraction. Therefore I wouldn't assume that he doesn't know what he is doing, I was just adding on top. Regards from a fellow karate instructor.

    Okinawans punch with their elbows pointing down at 45 degrees.
    Some Sensei once said ok to let elbow rise out to the side in sport when you don't need power.
    For street, keep 45. (Edit I think it was one of JesseEnkamp in Okinawa videos that mentioned this).
    Some take the elbow down to the extreme with TateZuki such as in IshinRyu). Thanks for sharing Yusuke as I see you are working on this from those aspects also, whether it's a palm push or a first contact.

    The lats don't move your arm forward. The function of the lats is to pull your arm back and down. The idea I think you were going for, especially after 6 minutes in with keeping the shoulders down is using the lats to stabilize your shoulder blades and back, thus giving you a stronger base to punch from. Similar to how powerlifters retract their lats during the bench, squat and deadlifts. A contracted lat muscle increases your core stability, giving you strength that way, and it also stabilizes the shoulder joints so they don't weaken and give way during impact of a punch, or in the case of a powerlifter, the bench press.

      I don't believe he said the lats are PRODUCING the energy (power), rather, they are responsible for carrying the energy from the legs/hips into the fist, which is 100% true. Stabilization in powerlifting is also known as getting rid of "power leaks". I suspect you've done neither karate or powerlifting...

    I am a karateka and a bodybuilder as well. It is remarkable that in bodybuilding we consider pushing movements in the sagittal plane like the push ups and bench presses primarily as a chest muscle exercise, not primarily for the lats. For the back muscles, including the lats, bodybuilding uses pulling movements, such as a pull up or chin up, and many kind and angles of rows. But of course, the pushing and pulling together both play a role in a punch. The punch itself is a push, but to produce the energy we need the pulling too, which is provided by the hand/arm that is not punching! So I think it is more complete if we say that both the chest and the lats muscles are working together in harmony to produce a powerful punch. Does this make sense to you? This is the reason that our sensei's pay at least the same amount of attention to both sides when punching. That is why we retract our not punching arm as hard as we punch with the punching arm.

    I had a debate with a kyokushin sensei about the difference between their tsukis and shotokan's. His main point was that shotokan tsukis only use biceps to generate power due to be launched from the hips. In addition, he said kyokushin ones are more powerful due to be launched from the ribs, so they use triceps and lats to generate power. I searched for some papers but didn't find much, any thoughts on this?

      From a powerlifting perspective, lower is better. Bench press paths arc down towards the hips for a reason.
      Also, if the punch starts at the ribs then that means the tricep is starting from a weaker position being overly stretched.

    Hi can you elaborate on the use of lats muscles for the punch ? The concern that I have with your explanation is that the lat muscles are primarily meant for pull motion, so on pushing motion lat muscles can only be used with eccentric contraction i.e. the contraction should aim at support/resistance/shock absorbtion. In the case of the punch my opinion is that it's used as the end of the motion to harden at time of impact to prevent recoil and subsequently increase total energy transmitted, not as a primary mover. I believe this correspond to "chinkuchi". In the case of uchi uke like in sanchin it's different as we have a pulling motion, applying concentric contraction. Gedan barai is yet again different, the primary muscles should be the rear deltoid and upper back muscles, while lats can be used at the end range for additional pulling.

    The opposite side lats, of pulling arm, are twisting torso and bending it slightly. Simultaniously front arm, shoulder, are thrusting forward. , utilising push from leg, hip. So simple ..why so many people in karate world do not understand the basic things?

    I like this idea, however I'm not sure it's the correct muscle: lats are mainly pulling muscles with some internal rotation. It seems to me we would like to hit the serratus anterior and pectoralis. Also, the exercises you are showing are better for those muscles than for the lats.

    We are taught to never raise or over extend our shoulders in our school because it disconnects the arm from the body. You generate power only from the shoulder instead of bigger back and chest muscles.

    i had a goju sensei who referred to the 'serape effect' ie making sure your stomach and back muscles activated to stabilize your shoulder when you punch. Likewise i studied shuri ryu for a few years. They don't turn their hand 180 degrees on a punch only about 135 degrees. Knuckles at a normal position as if you dropped your hand casually to your side. Your shoulder is in a stronger position. "Your armor is on" as sensei used to say.

    I believe you're training the Serratus Anterior muscle instead of the Lats muscle. You're promoting Scapular Protraction which is the Main Action of the Serratus Anterior Muscle whereas the Lats muscle provides Shoulder Joint Extension, Adduction, and Internal Rotation.
    Fun Fact: The Serratus Anterior is also called the Boxer's Muscle because it stabilizes the Scapula during punching.

      Don't close your fist tight if you mean punches. But overall, start slower and practice more, and you will get better over time. It's a separate skill all by itself as you learn to pull your strikes.

      you are absolutely correct, but as well as staying relaxed also try to understand that through training your lats you will attack as fast as you can retract. Do not concentrate on throwing your attack forward more the opposite contracting

    It's very interesting to have a focus on how to feel specific muscles, an approach that is sometimes forgotten by some coach.
    I have a question but not really about karate, even if it connect to it in a way ^^
    I heard you counting Ichi, ni, san, shi... It surprised me because in the few number I learn, 4 was yon. After a brief web search, I understood that shi and yon were exact. But also that yon was prefered to shi because the last was an homonyme for the death.
    So why shi is use in karate class ? Is the taboo of using shi obsolete ? It is a just a specificity of counting in japanese martial art ? Are they some linguistic and cultural nuances that i'm missing ? I'm really curious about that ^^ And even if the channel is about karate and not japanese language, I hope that the fact that this phenomenon concern counting in martial art make this question not too off-topic ^^

    As a physical therapist: Very funny. Everything you said is biomechanically wrong. If you feel your lats in a push-up you are doing something very wrong. What you should feel is your serratus anterior. Yes you can feel your lats when you bring your hands together. That is however a minor function of the muscle. It's a pulling muscle for goodness sakes. It's only active during hikite or you are actively breaking during your punch. Maybe you want to break while doing our tsuki. I don't know. Then you would be correct. But what you tell people here is what we have major trouble helping people unlearn because many think like you. Please just once ask someone who has been trained in biomechanics if what you learned in karate is actually true. Because like I said under other videos on this channel: You are mostly wrong. That doesn't mean you aren't a good karate teacher but it does mean you should focus more on learning these things if you insist on teaching them. Because right now you are spreading misinformation and people believe you because they don't know any better and what you say sounds good. Please educate yourself!
