    What Juraj Slafkovsky pulled off across the 2021/22 hockey season, is something of which the likes we may never see again. Olympic dominance, celebrity status, and an image to look up to. Sure there have been other outstanding draft eligible seasons such as Connor McDavid's, Patrik Laine's, or Sidney Crosby's... but in terms of influence and notoriety, Juraj Slafkovsky's journey is unlike anything we've ever witnessed before. And in all honesty, it may be one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed in the sport.
    Hope you all enjoy :)

    One of the most impressive things about him for me has been just how well he's taken all the pressure. Not at any point did it seem like it was getting to him, it just looked like it made him better. So excited to see what he can do in the future!

Very excited to see what the Habs franchise can do with all of their incoming talent in the pipeline drip feeding them rookies as the years & seasons go bye. Habs are gonna be DEADLY in the next 5 years guys, WATCH. ( Not as deadly as the Kings will be in 5 years from now though. Muahahahahahahahahaaa. Also if you have questions about any of the Kings prospects, feel free to reply to this comment to ask & I'll get back whenever I can. Peaaaacee ✌)

    Good vid but i need to say few things:
    Hockey absolutely is very popular in slovakia, not as much as in canada of course but still very popular.
    The reason Slafkovsky is hyped so much here in Slovakia is because we have very big hockey past (going as far back as Stan Mikita, Stastny brothers, Robert Svehla or more recently Peter Bondra, Miroslav Satan, Ziggy Pallfy, Marian Hossa, Marian Gaborik, Pavol Demitra, prime Zdeno Chara, Lubomir Visnovsky, Michal Handzus, Jozef Stumpel and more...) many people still remember the good ol´ days of all these players playing (about 2000 to 2010) but then we started sucking and we havent much talent in recent years (2015 - 2020) and now Slafkovsky along with many others is considered our next big thing - finally someone we can be proud of hockey-vise after years of pain

    Really nice video but there's one thing I would point out as a Slovakian, I personally believe that hockey is #1 sport in Slovakia at the moment due to the mentality of most people that just shift between football (soccer) and hockey depending on the national's team performances. Slovakian football (soccer) is really struggling at the moment in the same regards as our hockey was a few years back before talents like Slafkovský, Dvorský, Mešár, Nemec etc. came through the ranks and made the hype and good performances at men's and U18 tournaments.

    • @mariastyrakova3992
      @mariastyrakova3992 Před 2 lety +2

      I as a Slovak see this mentality in myself but I really hate it at the same time, its like whenever the boys win, “we won” but whenever they lose, suddenly its “they lost”, not “we lost”. This kind of attitude just puts unnecessary pressure on the players, so I hope people in this country will eventually get it right and just stand beside the boys whatever their results are🤞🏻

    Really interesting video. The insight into his cultural impact and what he's become in Slovakia was fascinating. I've been wondering why I constantly see comments from Slovaks on CZcams about how he's going to be a star, and why they're so attached to him, because the perception in North America feels very different. It's at least reassuring to know that he's already handled a ton of pressure and celebrity.
    I'm a Habs fan, and most of us don't want the Habs to draft him 1st overall, for all sorts of reasons. The most notable is that we've had a recent experience with a late-rising Liiga player who did well in international competition, with Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and we don't want to repeat that. Slaf's Liiga stats are even more alarming than KK's. A lot of Habs fans have been hoping for the team to pivot to an analytic approach to drafting for a while now, and the basic analytic (i.e. NHLe) model screams "stay away" in big red letters. More advanced analytics are more flattering, because he does do a lot of little things right, but still not all that encouraging. There's another aspect, which is very specific to Montreal, where all of our dumbest analysts and scouts have been praising him for 6 months, and they're the same people who praised Laine over Matthews, Kotkaniemi over Quinn Hughes, etc. It's certainly a logical fallacy to discount him for that reason, because it's guilt-by-association, but at least it'll help explain our attitudes to people on the outside.
    I get the sense, and I might be wrong, that he was too good for the U20 league while not quite being ready for Liiga. Regardless, I think he almost certainly could use another year before he hits the NHL, either in Liiga or in the AHL. I really do hope he hits his potential, whether it's in Montreal, New Jersey, or elsewhere. There's not enough great power forwards in the league.

      @FaceoffWithFarenholtz  Před 2 lety +1

      Literally the perfect assessment and exactly what I’m going for.
      I don’t think by many means that he’s the most skilled or statistically sound player in the draft. But I’m glad you were able to grasp the cultural impact side of what I was targeting. Although I am a big Slafkovsky supporter, I understand the risk assessment and history behind drafting players such as him.
      Thank you for the support :)

      @@FaceoffWithFarenholtz yeah no worries, I think you argued pretty well. I'm trying to expose myself to different perspectives because I think I've been overly negative ever since the Bobby Mac survey dropped yesterday. I've been dreaming of a Wright-Suzuki 1-2 punch for a while now, so I'm trying to adjust to the possibility of that not happening. I've already run through all of the worst-case scenarios if they pick Slaf, so I'm trying to see best-case scenarios instead.

      About that I can answer very clearly. It was a change in leadership. The head of Slovak hockey Igor Nemecek resigned due to players boycotting the national team and was replaced by business manager Martin Kohút who eventually left to make way for former NHL star's Miroslav Šatan presidency of the Slovak hockey federation. Šatan was quick to approach experts such as Craig Ramsay, Scott Moser, succesfull Slovak coaches abroad such Martin Dendis, NHL scouts like Otto Haščák, and Finnish analyst Juuka Tikkaja. The work with youth changed drastically and it's still in the process. That's the story in a nutshell.

    I am slovak and I would hold my horses in regards Slafkovsky. He has tons of work to do to become even stable member of any NHL team and not ending up in farm. We Slovaks are funny bunch, if we do well in hockey everyone is a big supporter and great patriot . However if we play bad everyone put their tail between the legs and moaning and blaming everyone hence after the bronze medal from WOG they created heroes and it happened to be Slafkovsky, before Olympic very few people knew who he was. It's funny seeing many Slovaks all over the internet saying how good Slafkovsky is 😀😀 and man you should see the slovak media, there is literally no one day that they would come up with some article about this year draft and mentioning that Slafkovsky might be first pick and so on. It's actually embarrassing and awkward... Slovakia lacks any sports success in recent years so this is for many people huge. Nevertheless I hope this boy and the others as well will do good regardless whether is picked from 1st or 100th spot in this year draft.

      As a Slovak myself, what you are writing is a pure disgrace and you should be ashamed. Media coverage is neither embarassing nor awkward, it's just your dumb dont-look-you-will-break-it mentality. He is great and I'm proud that he's getting so much coverage, hell he seems to be handling it really well! I've noticed Slaf last year and it was a shame that he couldn't score a goal at 2021 WC, bcs he was great. However he seems to have doubled down on hard work! And it has paid off in 2022 so far!

      You know what? Your comment really did age poorly, like a hot milk in the sun.
      It's quite sad that while many people from abroad (also experts) ended up recognizing his qualities, there are still some people in his own country who try to belittle his achievements (like anyone's achievement in general). You know, envy is not a good trait to show.
      In this case, the media were right and they were right for a reason. Now it's you and your comment that are actually embarrasing and awkward (to use your own words). Now you can put your tail between your legs and moan.

    Ppl knock him for his skating, he's not slow at all. For his size his foot work is not slow by any means it's actually pretty fast. He skates like he's 5'11 even tho he's 6'4. Also I keep seeing he doesn't use this size correctly well he can still learn all players can learn and improve in that area, I'm sure he will. He's only 18

    I think we can learn something from over hyping the international players that we debate for first pick, example being laine, kakko, zadina, etc. I'd stick with the solid riskless shane wright.

      And that's your choice. The same can be said about any player really. It's early on, but I'm pretty sure most would not have Lafreniere as their lock anymore regarding the 2020 draft, as for Byfield at 2 as well. The reality is anyone can succumb to the pressure. Whoever the Habs select at number 1 will be a phenomanal player :)
