- Abandoned tunnel exploration Isle of Wight, secret tunnel hidden in the woods on the outskirts of Shanklin.
This hidden tunnel is linked to the tunnel previously visited in Shanklin last year, it contains two deep wells. which appear to collect water from the Victorian borehole above:

I visited this very recently. I'm assuming that it's the top tunnel which has had the entrance entirely bricked up. Does the second tunnel below it follow the same path into the hill?

who built these brick-lined tunnels, how did they get the spoil out and then the bricks and mortar in, there are no rails to carry the materials.
From what I can gather they were built in the 19th Century, the top tunnel does actually have traces of cart tracks.

Hi Jacob, unfortunately, the Grand is no longer accessible.
It's now alarmed and has CCTV, I know of a couple of people who tried earlier in the year and got a nasty surprise of being snapped on the CCTV and ended up having their mugshot posted around the internet.

Of course I have. I went there a couple of months ago. Its really damn dusty inside but most of the stuff is keep well. There's a little out building on the courtyard area and you can go inside that. But it's got alot of water damage the floor submerged and one of the rooms has a Saw DVD on a desk which amused me.
These within the area of Shanklin river/chine? If so could be the piping for the natural water to the royal spa hotel.
they are a bit too far away I think, although I have heard several theories about it being used to supply water to the chine so possibly, thanks for watching 😁
Perhaps one of those wells was the one that the Messerschmitt aircraft crashed into in 1940? See: forum.axishistory.com//viewtopic.php?t=76338
That's an interesting theory, unfortunately, I don't think this is where that plane crashed as there is no real sign of damage and this tunnel runs directly under another.
You're right, this one seems really well preserved... Maybe the upper tunnel? "...some broken engine pistons, supposed to be from the aircraft. These were discovered at the end of a long tunnel leading from the heart of the lower woodland to the base of the well". The end of that top one is a mess - but that might be down to the fact that its construction wasn't finished? Who knows...
Are you able to tell me where this is? I wouldn't mind going to look down there myself?
Hi Matt, I've been informed that both tunnels have now been sealed back up. They are both located in the woodland area next to Cowleaze Hill on the way to Ventnor
