    Agree with a lot of this! Playing Card business may be declining from a point of view of creators / shops trying to shift units, but it's a good thing that people have access to create decks. Some of the best playing card brands around today just started off as a random 'nobody' with a good idea

      Ha! Let me know how is that deck going to sell when there is no market for it... Being too accesible killed the current market, if the playing card market wants to survive it will have to specialise a lot more and be a little more exclusive. If everybody can make special decks then nobody is making special decks.

    So personally I have been working on a design for a few years and seeing posts like the one you read really puts me off of pushing it further.
    Like you said in the video, maybe they are trying to put people off to help themselves, and I also agree that this was marketing for their discounted decks.
    But the passion in this video really just proves it all wrong. If you are passionate about what you are creating. Nothing should stop you no matter how big your following is.

    Thé Fontaine thing was amazing. Lots of very cool decks but also lots of mediocre ones that still sold out in 5 mins. Great marketing. Decks really have to be good to stand out now. I still love the simple designs though. I often think designs are too over the top for my tastes.

  • @BehindTheCardsTCG606
    @BehindTheCardsTCG606 Před 9 měsíci

    A lot of custom decks produced today aren’t really conducive to playing games like poker, euchre, rummy, cribbage, etc. It’s all about how they fan, how they feel. Plus most modern collectors are basically box collectors, keeping everything sealed (for future ROI)

    Let's give a little consideration to the plight of content producers on CZcams and elsewhere. If you are going to successfully compete for views, you have to put a lot of time and effort into planning, making, and editing your content. If you do card magic and want some money as well as glory in return the only two avenues open are merch, which almost always boils down to card designs, or lessons. Lessons demand an additional huge effort, but exclusive cards are much easier to come by. Hence, there are a lot of cards. Cards aren't "dead," but they aren't as much of a cash cow as most of their creators might once have hoped. If there is some kind of problem with too many card designs, it will correct itself with a narrowed market.

    • @icevast
      @icevast Před 9 měsíci

      You are correct, the market will correct itself, narrowing down either by making printing technology more exclusive or by educating the market on what actual good designs are (im talking about magic designs here). I think that Cardistry was actually one of the main culprits on the card market decline, with their over exploitation and constant abuse of the consumer base, it eventually lead to the market collapsing on them.

    Everyone wants to make their own deck and stand out in the modern community. It’s not terribly difficult to document everything out there right now. If anything is “dying”, it’s the antique collectors (literally and figuratively). As an antique collector (mainly of one specific brand) myself, I’m trying to accurately document up to 142 years of Congress playing cards. And there’s not a lot of information out there. I have to pool info from several collectors, old advertisements, my personal collection, etc. So be glad there’s a wealth of knowledge and information out there for the new stuff.

    The bigger corporations and/or conglomerates always want to try to monopolize the market, no matter what the situation is.. even in the art of magic, performance and its performance items. More choice, and more high quality choice at that, is always a good thing. That's why us magicians always have so many different decks of cards lol. Because they're all unique and tell a different story. Free markets for the win 🏆.

  • @FuglyStick
    @FuglyStick Před 7 měsíci

    The issue is you can't tout THIS line of cards of special/superior construction or durability or performance when all cards share those qualities, and that takes away the "this line is better than all the rest" marketing. For those invested in the "only the best" mindset, when everything is "the best," nothing is. You can't make the claim your product is unique, and therefore more valuable, and therefore worth a premium price, when there are dozens or hundreds of products that are the exact same for all practical purposes.
    Sure there are differences in quality, and that's reflected in the price. That's a good thing, don't take a $50 deck on a camping trip to play gin with your buddy when a $3 deck will do. But don't think "I'm going to make the best deck EVER that will NEVER be dethroned," because chances are that deck is already being made, and if not it soon will be by many, many others. Cards just aren't that complicated. So you're not going to be able to say "this is the best deck of cards ever made," because it's not true. And that bothers some people a LOT.
    Cards aren't Rolexs, they're Casios. There's a deck for every person, every purpose, every mood, and every occasion.

    TOTALLY agree with you! I think its quite a negative blog post and can actually do a lot of damage to aspiring deck creators or ANY other artists if you take it more broadly. Ellusionist having that much reach as a platform means they have a lot responsibility. They have the power to encourage and empower artists. Yet here they chose to scare them and fill them with reasons of why not to create a deck. It may not have been with ill-intent (i doubt it is) but its not the right outlook. At the same time its like they want us to feel sorry for them, but they need to step it up, the old standard of decks isnt enough now that it is more of a level playing field. Pull ur socks up, dont be defeated Ellusionist and do some good work u can do! I mean its literally a blog post of a defeated artist sharing why he is defeated (and also plugging his discounted decks at the same time) but its all ur own fault Ellusionist. Its only ur fault ur decks arent selling as much, what you gonna do about it? Complain about the market and give up? U can, or u can adapt and try harder to inspire and create and be hopeful and positive. I mean that is literally Clarkes outlook. He said that himself. But mate if ur reading this, its not the markets fault and u should be happy the market has been upgraded even if it means ur business is suffering. Do u love magic more or the business? From what u said before, it seems like u love magic more. Enjoy and celebrate the awesome market nowadays and if u wanna be at the top of the market then do something about it instead of complain and plug ur discounted decks. This all comes from a place of love fr. This whole thing got me so passionate as well, its kinda sad and rude of Ellusionist but i totally get why someone would have that outlook and that they only wrote the blog post from a place of love and trying to warn people. But yea unfortunately its actually a bit of a toxic blog

    You can’t compare playing cards to a coffee house. Just like the art world itself there are tons of artists out there. What makes a specific deck unique is the actual art design on the cards. At least nowadays it’s more about the art and designs on the card more than the build of the card. Now everyone can make good cards with designs they like. So why is that a bad thing? I don’t understand.

    • @icevast
      @icevast Před 9 měsíci

      It's a bad thing because everybody lost a big differentiator. 10 years ago choosing the right printing company helped A LOT to make a deck viable in the market, nowadays that's not something that will make the difference, that's good and bad because your design will have to be the only thing to convince a potential buyer, the market wants more than that, you need more than that to make a quality deck!
      The people that are selling decks right now are selling decks because they already have a community that is willing to buy whatever they put out there, not because of the quality of the decks.
