  • In this video we went down to the Colne Valley railway to attempt to start our other two powercars, 43082 and 43071. This video is split into two parts for two seperate days. One day we started 43071 up. This Power Car is fitted with an MTU Power Unit. Then in part two we started 43073, which has a VP185 Power Unit.
    Both Power Cars started up which made for an excellent video. Towards the end of day two we performed a shunt and now our operational set is formed of 43071 two Ex LNER MK3 coaches amd 43073. Both Power Cars were stored at Long Marston awaiting purchase. As a result they both have not been started up for long period of time. We were able to place a camera in the Engine Room of each Power Car to cover their first startups in Preservation. 43073 Performed well and gave us a classic "Claggy Paxman Start" which was definitely a sight to be seen.
    We would like to thank the fitters at EMR for coming down and assisting us getting our fleet operational and ready for our running date. You have been a big help!
    We have an offical running date planned for our Power Cars. The set date is the 16th of April 2022. On this day there will be 43071 & 43082 operating with three mk3 coaches. Tickets will be for unlimited rides up and down the line. We will be using our buffet coach to serve light refreshments and bottled beer. We will also have our third Power Car in the bay platform available for a tour! The link to book tickets will be available in below.

    Surprised 071 started up that easily. (Probably because a. It's an MTU and b. You preheated the engine block)

    Ah, nothing like a nice claggy Valenta start up. Part of the legendary mystique of the 125 was when one flew past with the Valenta power point screaming away like a banshee #GoodTimes

    43071 one of our regular visitors to the Oak (Old Oak Common) Depot prior to the Depot closing. Driving these power cars, and/or associated sets around the Depot was always a pleasure since several of us techs were trained and licenced to move our trains, on depot, when we were either short of shed drivers or, more often, a hell of a lot of shunts/movements needed carrying out.

    • @BOBPTransportVideos

      She was on the GWM for some time before she retired, definitely one if the most well traveled one as it’s worked on the ECML, XC and Midland sections as well as the Great Western!
      Sounds like an honour to have drove these fine machines when they were in service even if it was in a depot, sounds like a busy procedure but must have been great!

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev Před 2 lety +8

    You really might think that for engines that were installed at the same time as the MTUs, Paxman might have managed to produce something that started much better from cold and produced rather less clag, wouldn't you. It's not really a noticeable advance on the Valenta (though it sounds very like it, which is a point in its favour)

    • @BOBPTransportVideos
      @BOBPTransportVideos  Před 2 lety +5

      It is certainly a strange one, in service it was not to bad for the VP185 as the engine block would retain some heat after being switched off. However starting them from cold it creates a bit of a problem. In the future we plan to fit a Pre Heater to our VP185s to reduce engine wear on cold starts which will increase the life span of the engine. The MTU fires up with no drama at all! Very solid engines with hardly any emissions. The MTU in 43071 is in very good condition considering it has been stored away and switched off for ages! and when we started it for the first time threw up no faults at all.
      Thank you for watching the video!

    • @jerryhill7508
      @jerryhill7508 Před 2 lety +3

      I would be interested to see if the MTU can start without heating up to near running temperature, I imagine if it can it will also produce clouds of in burnt fuel in the process of run up!

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna Před 2 lety +3

      Agreed. The VP185 was however an improvement on Valenta regarding fuel economy, lubrication oil & Diesel black smoke emissions and they were about one Tonne lighter each engine, if I remember correctly. Having watched a number of XPT videos the lack of blue smoke is particularly evident. Unfortunately as the engines aged they did start to produce black smoke but oil control was still good.

    • @BOBPTransportVideos
      @BOBPTransportVideos  Před 2 lety +5

      @@jerryhill7508 We don’t have any plans to start 43071 without the pre heater as yet. The preheater saves us a lot of grief when it comes to mechanics, but if it happens one day I will be sure to capture it on video would be interesting to see!

    • @BOBPTransportVideos
      @BOBPTransportVideos  Před 2 lety +3

      @@Martindyna Indeed the VP185 had a few problems when they entered service but they have proved themselves over the years to be more efficient than their predecessor, a key engine in the history of the HST and we’re glad to have them preserved and in working order!

      @BOBPTransportVideos  Před 2 lety +2

    May I ask what the deal is with the EMR branded 125 please?. I thought that all the valentas had been removed so why does this 125 still have one?. Was this reinstated after preservation or did EMR not bother upgrading their HST's?. Just curious as the Scotrail (ex GWR) units are loud and smokey but nothing like this! Lol.

      This is not a valenta, no power cars have had valentas in them since the early 2010s. 43073 is fitted with a Paxman VP185
