  • 125 Group/Project Miller prototype HST power car 41001 performs a cold start at Wansford on the Nene Valley Railway after arriving as part of the convoy from Leicester LIP ready for the NVR Spring Diesel Gala at the weekend. After a spectacular smokey show, 41001 uncouples from its matching Mk3's and runs round to refuel. Filmed on 7th April 2016.
    The loco convoy moves will feature in a separate movie later

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna Před 4 lety

      Most countries use at least some Diesel traction e.g. for branch lines. Note the video shows the prototype power car which is now an obsolete design, the IC125 power cars were re-engineered around the year 2006 and MTU 16V4000 R41R engines fitted. The German MTU engines are far more environmentally friendly and produce no visible smoke (while still in good condition). The MTU engines are interlocked so that starting the engine is not possible unless the engine has been electrically heated up to about 25 degrees C (from memory).
      If interested you can see & hear an MTU engine starting if you search for this video …… `Great Western Railway 43156 Engine Startup at Camborne'

      As load increases, the Napier turbocharger starts to spin up; first a low whistle, getting higher and higher until you get the scream, then higher still until just a hiss. The turbo shaft produces 750bhp.

      @Martindyna Před 6 lety

      Your XPT has an update of the Valenta - the VP185. I understand that when stone cold those engines also `vape' alot since the design predates preheaters. I don't know whether the fleet of XPTs will be re-engined with German MTUs eventually (like the UK HSTs) but these I believe do have preheaters and start like a dream. Although MTU is German the last time i checked they were owned by Rolls Royce Power Systems AG.

    • @DaleDix
      @DaleDix Před 6 lety

      Martindyna I live in a different state and don't know much about them. I remember that they got new engines though. Australia is also in the dark ages when it comes to trains too, the politicians love roads.

    • @Martindyna
      @Martindyna Před 6 lety

      Yes, you may be remembering when the engines were changed from Paxman Valenta to Paxman VP185s. Although not liked by most train enthusiasts, MTU engines are far greener than either of them. I don't agree that the IC125 is the dark ages now the power cars have been re-engineered with MTU and other changes although in terms of speed obviously you are correct (but there again I like old British Rail stuff).
      Our government has recently decided to run a line under London from West England to East London so the IC125 is being replaced on that line (by Hitachi dual mode electric / Diesel trains) since Diesel is unsuitable to run in tunnels. What a waste of money!!!

  • @Martindyna

    Had to laugh when somebody coughed!
    Did Valentas misbehave like that when cold even when new? - if so I would have thought that the media would have pounced on this except for the fact that most people in the UK are prejudiced for the IC125 and Valentas.
    Presumably the design predates the use of preheaters.
