How can I access the arcade version ? The nes version I have on switch isn’t as good
@@Toastie12 You can actually buy it on the Switch under the "Arcade Archives" series. It's probably the easiest way to play it...although you gotta pay
@@TheLonelyGoomba oh ok . Gotta wash my parents cars to buy it then 😂
I wasn't expecting a music from Obelix !
@@TheLonelyGoomba Two things to say:
1. The Top 5 are definitely the versions I'd like to play. Two “Arcade” games, and three “Expanded” games. About Kattekita Mario Bros. (AKA Return of Mario Bros.) I’d like to elaborate: Nagatanien is the name of the Food company that you spoke of. In fact, Nintendo had a partnership with that company for promotional stuff with it’s own brand of food (Mario Curry, Mario Ramen, and Mario Furikake). The two modes in Kattekita Mario Bros. Are “Original Mode” and “Nagatanien World”; Nagatanien World is what you must play on to get the prizes after taking a photoshoot of your victory. Nagatanien World also gives you a second chance at playing more of the game, hence the Slot Machine. Two Matches of the same icon gives you one extra life, Three Matches gives you two extra lives, but the following characters on the slot machine (永谷園) gives you four extra lives. NintendoComplete has a translation video for all the text presented in Japanese.
2. I feel the Game & Watch game should’ve gone in the “Honorable Mentions” pile, because it doesn’t play like the Arcade game, and it was released before it. Yes, Mario Clash, the Hudson Mario Bros. Games, and SMB3 2-Player Battle are in the pile for being deviations of the Arcade game, I just don’t see why the G&W game wasn’t put there.
Bro, the production value here is insane, this is so absurdly high quality
Thank ye. I try my best
You know why??
Because he smart and doing video ten years, even more than that. Can you believe it? I remember being like 12 and watching his stuff.....
@@TheLonelyGoombafun fact: the game & watch Mario bros. was released before the arcade version.
High Quality Goombtent, as always 👌
@@TheLonelyGoombayou rock
This game introduced collecting coins, it introduced hitting blocks by jumping against them, it introduced turtles, pipes, fireballs...
A lot of people call Super Mario Bros weird for having a lot of random elements, yet they seem to forget half of it is from this game.
After you passed the NES era, I was absolutely ready to leave a cheeky 'you forgot Super Mario Bros 3's battle mode!' comment, but I stuck with it and lo and behold, you didn't forget! Great video, and thorough too!
As a side note for the GBA version, if you find the early levels too easy it's because once you get good at them you are supposed to do combos:
if you setup multiple enemies and kill them in a row you get way more points and stuff!
It's that kind of mechanic new players can safely ignore but adds that little something to make great ones plan ahead.
If you mess up you set-up the enemies level up, so it's a risk vs reward thing too!
Surprised he didn't mention that, but maybe he didn't know.
I always enjoyed trying to line up all of the enemies to finish them off in one full sweep in the early levels. Racked up a lot of points and a couple of extra lives.
Uh...the combo thing is in all versions
@@mortenera2294 It's not in all versions.
@@mortenera2294bro you really don't need to type out "uh" or "um" filler words are for speech
That mechanic was also in the arcade version.
9:26 Little details like this is why I love this channel
Yeah, I noticed that too. :O
Fun fact: the game and watch version of Mario Bros came out 3 months before the arcade version, making it technically Luigi’s debut game.
Technically, Luigi's debut game was the DK Jr. arcade version...
@@jayo1212No, it wasn't.
@@imfsresidentotaku9699 well, it had two identical Marios, so it could be...
@@jayo1212But was he green?
@@metaknightjudgesyoursins4710 maybe it was before he wore green...
Kaettekita (帰ってきた) means “came back”, so the title of Kaettekita Mario Bros. literally means “The Mario Bros. who came back”
Or you could think of it as “Return of the Mario Bros.”
Edit: and it’s pronounced like “kite-tecky-tah” (first syllable is as in ‘flying a kite’)
26:50 Fun fact I had no idea about - this GBA version of Mario Bros can be played in multiplayer even with different carts, as long as both had Mario Bros. So putting it on every GBA Mario game has a purpose!
Ah, yes. The game Chris Pratt loved, where he always jumped on the *KOOPAS!*
The GBA version of Mario Bros will always be my childhood. That being included with the Mario Advance games gave me plenty of extra entertainment as a kid. Great production quality, I'm glad I finally found this channel recently!
I haven't gotten to the GBA part yet, but GBA was my childhood as well. I remember either me or my brother got a high score, then like 12+ years later I started playing it, and I beat the high score, and I felt amazing. I was like ''take that nerd!'' haha x)
The gba version was so fun ye
''Playing every single version of [blank]'' is probably my favourite series on this channel. not that the others are bad! I like the others too. but I've always been fascinating with history, and programming, and what difference different versions of games can have. so if you find more games that has millions of versions, I wouldn't mind watching another video like this :)
What I like about ports is that every one of them have a unique style and limitation.
If you like Punch-Ball Mario Bros. Then you'll love Anton-Ball, available now on the Nintendo E-Shop. Made by the same team thats working on Anton Blast, which is another game based off of Wario Land. This game combines both Virtual Boy: Wario Land and Wario Land 4. If you want a game thats based off of just Wario Land 4, then you'll love Pizza Tower.
I love that game, it’s so good. The Steam version even has online multiplayer and global online leaderboards.
This was awesome! I love when you take a classic game like this and do a deep dive on the various versions. The Donkey Kong videos are some of my favorites. Thank you for taking the time to put this huge video together, I really think it paid off!
How in the heck did you comment this two days ago

Thanks for acknowledging the All-Stars version even if it was a small thing. A friend and I discovered it on accident and had a laugh about it. kek
Yeah it’s surprisingly solid.
I just moved out of my parents for the first time and into a new apartment, and one of the first things I did was watch new CZcams videos from my fav channels on the big ass TV downstairs. Like this and the new RebelTaxi, I felt right at home
The successor to Playing Every Version of Donkey Kong!
Nice to see you doing another deep dive on every version of a game again. Would love to see more of this sort of thing.
The L.G. sure works hard to entertain us. Why hasn’t Bowser given him a raise yet?
cos Bowser's a dick.
Junior sure likes these!
(I fall asleep when he binges them... Until he SHOUTS or LMAOs at his favorite parts. Doesn't notice the nap. )

An excellent video Goomba! Quick fun fact though: The Mario Bros. Game & Watch Game actually predates the Arcade game by a few months, which canonically makes it the first canonical appearance of Luigi! It's pretty wild all things considered.
I love these arcade rerelease ranking videos you do. I think the differences between these releases are really interesting, and not a ton of people on CZcams cover them to the extent you have. I know you got really into Pac-Man a while ago, would love to see one on that.
I don't even like gaming videos anymore, but I still watch your videos when you upload.
Love your content, keep doing these videos they rock+
Thanks for the continued support. Very much appreciate
I wonder if the reason the original nes game flickered so badly is the way they did the floors.
They move, and it was super early so the moving background tricks weren't used it. It's possible they were ALL sprites which would massive chug the console.
Yeah I suspect that’s why. I think they are all separate sprites
Another nice detail about the GBA version is that you only need one cartridge to play the multiplayer mode. I remember one time my brother, dad and I played it on our GBAs. Like you said about the difficulty, I didn’t find it challenging until the 60s and even then it has continues. All in all it’s a decent time sink and definitely my favorite version of the game.
Your combinations of Goomba with real footage is immaculate, that deserves its own mention. This is yet another video I will be watching/listening to many times over while I am playing a game or something. :3 The GBA version was such a nice surprise addition to the Mario games on that platform. I played it for hours.
Trivia: the person responsible for the unreleased C64 version of Mario Bros. is the same person responsible for composing music in the original Gex: Greg “G-Man” Weber. The reason as to why the game didn’t release is simply because of the North American Video Game Crash of 1983; he couldn’t find a publisher. However, because he worked on this game-he finally got his foot in the door! You can check out G-Man’s Blog to read about it (even how Gex was one of those “projects from Hell”).
This is every bit as memorable as your excellent Donkey Kong video. Brilliant stuff from beginning to end. 👍👍
Thank you, rough day at work, come home and this is waiting for me. Shine on goomba, shine on.
It sucks for me that ZX spectrum version was my first ever mario bros game, back then I didn't know better but I enjoyed it. No I'm not joking I actually liked this when I first played it lol
I'm glad I get to see that version one last time, I think it was around 1993 since I last seen that version. 30 years mate that's a long time but even tho this is the biggest pos mario game i've seen it was lovely to see it one more time.
Thank you so much The Lonely Goomba, or should I call you "The Lovely Goomba"?
I absolutely adore the 2600 version! It's primitive yes, but it's so much better with two players. Mario Clash on VB is probably one of my top five VB games too, I love it.
Yes! The every version of donkey kong vid was one of my favorites, it's good to have a sequel!
I really hope this becomes a series, I’d love to see more of these, maybe Kirby or Sonic or something
Multiplayer on the GBA version is so much fun. I only got to play it one time back in the GBA days, but it left a good impression!
Massive respect for doing this!
What a great episode! Luigi Bros was the one I have the most memories with, all because Luigi was my favourite character and it was the Year of Luigi.
You've become one of my top comfort channels. Seriously, I watch your videos over and over again. The classic stuff is so funny, but it's always impressive when you go in-depth. Great video, and hopefully it does better than Urban Yeti.
Love your videos, Goomba!! I... also misunderstood the title. I thought you were going to be playing every mainline Mario platformer, but even better, I learned how many versions the original Mario Bros game has lol! I thought there was only the arcade version and the GBA ports lol. Thanks for sharing!
I love this series man, and the work that goes into it doesn’t go unnoticed. Keep doing your thing and be safe
This was fantastic! I love seeing these obscure games that I have heard about in action, and you did a great job covering it!
The GBA version of Mario Bros was how I was introduced to the arcade classic. Suffice to say, I love that version, despite some of its faults. Revamped controls, boping tunes, and a chaotic multi-player mode makes it one of my favorite GBA remakes.
I've been watching your stuff for a while and you have gotten so much more production value with your videos, great job!
Killer video! It's nice seeing a followup to the DK ranking video two years later! I've never been a fan of Mario Bros., but the GBA remake always impressed me. I look forward to hearing you talk more about the Virtual Boy in the future--perhaps with Wario Land in tow!
It's surprising how many ports are actually as good, if not better, than the original arcade game. Great video!
Thanks for the upload, Lonely Goomba, it was rather good seeing both "new" entries and entries of this series I played in the past😊
I love these videos of you doing a deep dive on every version of an arcade original.
I wouldn’t have even known that an unreleased remaster of Mario Bros was better than the official release if it wasn’t for this, if I can point out, insanely high quality and well made video.
You’re doing some amazing stuff, Goomba!
Keep it up!
I love it when you do these big videos Goomba! I know a lot about obscure Nintendo games, but you always manage to teach me something new (and in an incredibly entertaining format too)! =D
33:02 I was wondering whether SMB3's version would show up. The thing I always loved about this one was the extra bonus game with the coins coming out of the pipe and the one where you kick the ?-blocks away.
I have an NES cartridge of Mario Bros. lying around somewhere. My cousin used to play it a lot. But at the top of my head I don't know if it's the original version or the EU one since I'm European. Should check on that some time.
I remember playing the gba version for hours on road trips, will always hold a special place in my heart
Daaamn, haven't watched you in a while and I can certainly tell you grew and improved. Good work.
Great video as always, and I love the GBA version of this one despite the flaws of the zoomed in screen. 👍
"Ey Mario, our first game, you know with Mario in the title, ey!"- Loogi, Vinesauce
I adore these videos! It is so cool to see some of the classic early 80's arcade games and how they were ported in so many weird ways for the hardware at the time. Great stuff!!!!
Oh cool. I liked the every dk version video so this should be fun to watch
So I asked a friend who speaks Japanese, “kaettekita” is a way of saying “to have returned” so im assuming its something along the lines of “Mario Bros. return”
I think I read somewhere it's "The Return Of Mario Bros".
Timing's insane; I just started playing Mario Bros. GBA a few days ago, and played the original arcade cabinet at a classic arcade bar last November with all original hardware, and display, and I got to say they are both just as good for their own reasons! Nice upload!!
18k views within one day! Let's get this masterpiece quickly to 50k 👍
Goomba, you've definitely outdone yourself here, well done legend. Keep up the good work 🤗
Thank you for reminding me of those amazing playing sessions with my Mom when I was like 9 or 10, we'd play the VS. Mode in the Super Mario Bros. All Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3 for hours, she got really good and it was a challenge to beat her.
I never imagined there were that many versions of the game, I thought they way less than the Donkey Kong versions of the other video.
All-Stars version was great
@@o_o_o_o_o-o_o_o_o_o I know, so much replayability.
Yeah, my mates and I played the hell out of that All-Stars SNES version. Super good.
Another banger video Goomba! Keep up the great work between thos pipes!
You deserve way more subs for the amount of effort that goes into your videos.
28:56 Who would’ve guessed that SMG4 and Starman3 would appear in an official Mario game
These videos are great quality content, very well done and just the right length.
I call shenanigans! How Mr. Koopa, do you stop to scratch your nose? Aaaaahhhh....don't do that! Seeing a Gomba with human hands, arms, torso, and legs is pure nightmare fuel. Subbed.
I call myself a big fan of Mario Bros, yet I didn't know icicles existed until now? Goodness...
Absolutely baller video, every single time I was thinking to myself "is he going to cover that?" and then you did! Great stuff!
Thanks to you, Goomba, I am feeling inspired to buy the Arcade Archives version of Mario Bros. Seems kinda cool!
such fond memories of the gba one, advance 4 was my childhood :) so happy to see it holds up!
“MARIO, WHERE ARE YOU”
- Luigi
You do great content and i hope you keep it up!
(This is literally the first time ive hit this payment thanks button)
I am honoured to be your first 😌
never expected someone to get so excited about icicles, but here we are.
Awesome video! Didn’t know half of these existed. I miss your intro though!
YES HE LISTENED TO MEEE THANK YOU GOOMBA,also the editing and quality is amazing a great evolution from the dk video also amazing thumbnail
also this game used to piss me off but multiplayer is always a great time
The Atari "wafers" or coins are there because of the sprite limitations. The Atari has an extra feature (often called the ball) that is being used for the coins to avoid using a sprite, but it can only be square, as it is a repeated line.
Great video!! Years and years ago (maybe early 2000s) I had a GB rom of Mario Bros. Looking back it had to be some sort of home brew. There was no music and Mario had an odd looking sprite, almost like the mini game screen on Mario 3.
I know this sounds like creepypasta or something but I’ve NEVER been able to find footage of this game since or even a screenshot
Interesting to see how these Mario Bros games have influenced the rest of the series!
There's an interesting lack of the crabs and flies in later games though. Wonder where those went...
wonderful video.
thank you for all the entertainment all these years over
I never played the arcade version until the "anyway you can era" and the learning curve over how differently it controls than most other versions is intense. I can never seem to get the hang of it, because the NES version was always on my mind. I did also play the Atari 2600 one quite a bit, having the hand me down system and all. And I get the feeling they could very well do standard roundish coin shapes, but whoever programmed it wanted to be fancy and do a color layering thing on the "wafers." They were supposedly just dealing with a lot of pushing the system graphically near the end, and they at least had some decent effects. Just...wafers? Like those weird cookies with the frosting in between flavorless, styrofoam-y crisps that are always stale even out of the package you only eat if there's no other cookie in the house? They better had be the expensive European kind that actually taste good.
I always thought of the "wafers" in the 2600 port as credit cards. I suppose they could also be wafers of silver, although what wafers of silver would be doing in the sewers of New York in the 1980s is beyond me.
worth the wait, but damn, looked like an awful lot of work! thanks for another great video
I remember playing Mario Bros. a lot on my GBA Mario Advance 1 and 4. I liked the game but back then I sucked at playing it lol. I loved this video, keep up the good work Goomba.
“Somethings gumbing up the plumbing poor Luigi’s in a bide, giant turtles out to get you, creepy crabs are right behind, fire flys jeepers yikes! Somethings coming out the pipes!”
-Mario bros advertisement 1983
The slipices in the 2600 version can be taken out while they’re freezing platforms. This actually awards you with more points than just hitting them from below.
Awesome video as always! I almost said you forgot the SMB3 versions, but you didn't, nice! :D
Also, kaettekita means "it came back". So I think a good translation for the title would be "Mario Bros. Returns".
Huge video goomba love the orange sky that new side turn animation there that was definitely new 35:37
Great video once again!
I haven’t watched yet but I’m starting rn and ily goomba thanks for all the excellent content consistently!!!
THAT WAS BEST VID OF 2023! 🎉🐐🐐
I’d love to see more videos like this, like going through the history of different games.
This has become my favorite subseries of yours.
Every version of Pac-Man? That would be fascinating.
Cant wait to see you rank every version of Super Mario Bros
Including the "special"
A cockney goomba just feels right
Once again it’s time to watch a awesome video
Donkey Kong Ports: Missing the *Pie Factory*
Mario Bros Ports: Missing the *Icicles*
One positive we can all appreciate is that no Goombas were hurt in the playing of these games.
It’s actually one of my favorite Mario games, it kinda reminds me of Super Show.
Hi Mr Goomba. I know I’m not the first person to say this (in fact you’ve probably heard this a million times by now), but seriously, thanks for giving us all such high quality content for all these years. They really have been a treat to watch :D
that hi - scores music bopped HARD!
How do you always have the best thumbnails? 😆
Not gonna lie I miss your intro, amazing work as always though
Sad thing is that some people don't know that Mario Bros even exists.
The icicles of Mario Bros are the Pie Factory of Donkey Kong.
