Depends on the region/town/village, but usually they ring for about 5 to 10 minutes to indicate the "Angelusgebet", or prayer times (6 AM, Noon and 6 PM), an old tradition in most churches.
The call to prayer for The Angelus is different, the bell tolls are… (although speaking as a Catholic, I do think this is likely a call to prayer, but just not for the Angelus… that bell toll is completely different) The Angelus is three slower bell rings…. Followed by about 20-30 seconds of silence… followed by 3 more slow bell rings…. Followed by another 20-30 seconds of silence… I think it’s done for 5 times. I’m so used to hearing it, that I’m not entirely sure how many times it’s done… I’m just so used to it 😂❤ The reason that tradition still holds for that type of bell ringing… Is back in the day, before they had printed mass instructions, the rings of the bell would indicate what part of the hymn or prayer book (or Bible) to turn to…. My gran is the one that told me that back in the 1970’s, when I was little ❤️💕👍🏼

Hi, I’m from Heidelberg and know exactly where she is located in this video. So happy to see my city! 🎉 What you are looking on is a large Protestant church in the middle of the city. This is not a rural village, it’s right and center in a busy lively city. It’s the church right beside the very large university‘s library. Our churches (protestant or catholic) are ringing to call for their mass. They will call for their daily mass and the Sunday’s mass 1hour an advance, half a hour in advance and 5min before start in advance so nobody misses the mass. This final calling will last 5-10min and then it’s over. Besides the constant ringing for calling, our churches are ringing every 15min and every full hour to tell the time between 6 am and 10 pm. Nobody’s bothered by it, but for tourist it may seem very surprising. Have a nice stay in this very good hotel and get well soon, our clinics are world known - all the best! ❤
Youre in my hometown! There are many reasons why the bells peal forever. Could just be a church service letting out. I hope you enjoy heidelberg, it is such a beautiful city.
They ring thrice per day to call for the faithful Catholics to recite Angelus prayers. A prayer recited in Honour of the Incarnation of God. I worked as a Travel Consultant for 31 years and it's a very romantic place to travel I'd say in my personal opinion. There's a cruise that's very lovely and popular with tourists called the Neckar Cruise. Lots of castles and beautiful stones and bridges. The beer is very strong.. watch out.. there's also a sausage factory there and I toured it . I'm unsure if they still have that but don't leave without eating sausage and saurkraut at Vetter's Alt Heidelberger Brahaus.😊 🇩🇪 💯 enjoy!!

It's funny to me how there's these regional differences. In my hometown the church bells ring more at 9 pm every day, to tell everybody that the day is over. They ring 10-15 minutes before service starts and they ring while a funeral procession is moving from the church to the graveyard (that's like 500 meters max. so everyone who can walks)
Motel 6 is about the only chain I've ever seen in the US where everyone we've stayed in has opening windows. And as travel workers, we spend a lot of time in motels lol.
