Depends on the region/town/village, but usually they ring for about 5 to 10 minutes to indicate the "Angelusgebet", or prayer times (6 AM, Noon and 6 PM), an old tradition in most churches.

    • @trina7274
      @trina7274 Před 23 dny +21

The call to prayer for The Angelus is different, the bell tolls are… (although speaking as a Catholic, I do think this is likely a call to prayer, but just not for the Angelus… that bell toll is completely different)
The Angelus is three slower bell rings…. Followed by about 20-30 seconds of silence… followed by 3 more slow bell rings…. Followed by another 20-30 seconds of silence… I think it’s done for 5 times. I’m so used to hearing it, that I’m not entirely sure how many times it’s done… I’m just so used to it 😂❤
The reason that tradition still holds for that type of bell ringing…
Is back in the day, before they had printed mass instructions, the rings of the bell would indicate what part of the hymn or prayer book (or Bible) to turn to…. My gran is the one that told me that back in the 1970’s, when I was little ❤️💕👍🏼

Hi, I’m from Heidelberg and know exactly where she is located in this video. So happy to see my city! 🎉
What you are looking on is a large Protestant church in the middle of the city. This is not a rural village, it’s right and center in a busy lively city. It’s the church right beside the very large university‘s library.
Our churches (protestant or catholic) are ringing to call for their mass. They will call for their daily mass and the Sunday’s mass 1hour an advance, half a hour in advance and 5min before start in advance so nobody misses the mass. This final calling will last 5-10min and then it’s over.
Besides the constant ringing for calling, our churches are ringing every 15min and every full hour to tell the time between 6 am and 10 pm. Nobody’s bothered by it, but for tourist it may seem very surprising.
Have a nice stay in this very good hotel and get well soon, our clinics are world known - all the best! ❤

I live by a catholic church with bells they ring every hour on the hour and then at noon and midnight they play a special song that's longer

I am a teacher working at a German high school. There is a church really, really close by. When it does its five minutes of dinging at noon and the windows are open, it's impossible to understand a word someone is saying. I just let my students work on their own until the five minutes are up. Sometimes I'm a little bit annoyed by the dinging when it comes to my school morning.
Apart from that I like it a lot and find it comforting even. The church is the one whose congregation I belong to. I attend mass there and do a lot of different volunteer work. The people there are like family to me.
One and a half years ago I moved and live right next to "my" school now, so also very close to said church. The day I moved I could hear the bells call for mass from my kitchen for the first time. I was actually touched by that.
I know it's rather uncommon for Germans to have church and a congregation play a major role in their lives but for me they do. The dinging makes me feel connected to the people and reminds me of countless great experiences.
The morning dinging happens at 7am for this church by the way, to save people's sleep and sanity 😂
It's amazing that you came to Germany. I' ve been to Heidelberg twice before and find it beautiful. You also hear about it often because it's such a popular place to study at in Germany.

If its a Catholic Church and the bells are ringing 6am, 12pm, and 6pm, its ringing for the traditional prayer times for the Angelus

In Germany there is an important concept called "Luften" which means airing. That's when you open windows multiple times a day to allow fresh air to come in and moisture to escape. This is because most German windows are very well insulated. So failure to do that especially in colder months will cause mold. Now you know 😂

I once lived between two churches in one of the most famous villages in Germany. And i kid you not, each church rang every hour one after another for like 10 to 15 mins. I didn't quite understand why coz its filled with old people and they definitely could use some soft and peaceful sounds 😅 Sometimes they would go bonkers ringing together even though situated at a distance of 100 metres 😂😂😂
