I just read the background of the story writing of the song right now. Cronin wrote it originally as a full on pop ballad. When he took it to the rest of the band they were like “Wtf? No way” so he got them in on the production and composition of the instrumentation of it and the rest of the band developed it into the more rock laden cut we love today. It was beautiful.
masterful! that band had it all… superior front man… Check! A rock God of a guitarist who could shred with the best of them… Check! fantastic rhythm section with taste, and just the right dose of complexity… Check! not to mention the material, the vocals, the keyboards, etc. etc. etc.
Yes and Nah. If the show was going today, who would be in it? Have you seen the pop charts lately? On Midnight Special tonight will you welcome Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift,Arianna Grande, Dua Lipa etc etc. Hey, they are the more common ones, most in the charts (and featuring ???????) I and everone over 25 don't have a clue. Where are the Rock bands? Non existent today although maybe the Rolling Stones or a surprise AI performance from the Beatles will come our way. I am old school myself, and am grateful that I get to see these shows as it happened, so I am reminded of how good things were in the 70s, unlike the utter crap that people call music today.
I wore my REO Speedwagon tshirt out “You Can Tune a Piano But Can You Tuna Fish.” It was red and had the coolest artwork on it. I wish I would’ve kept it!
@@TheZappawizard all the music was performed LIVE' on this show it states it in the Homepage and Mr. Superman( what?? I meant to say Mr. Sugarman 😹😂) said that's what he wanted so yeah.. Other shows the bands and Artists their tunés were lipped sync..
A favorite song by them sounds so fantastic here, with Gary’s emotive guitar playing, their harmonies are hauntingly beautiful. The lyrics sure make one think, don’t they? 🤔
Great stuff. Gary Richrath was awesome. May he rest in peace. Just saw The Eagles and the Doobie Brothers last night. Any performances from either one you can share.
Who would have thought that a song about cheating would make this band a smash hit? They have so many great songs and yet this is the one that literally changed their lives forrrrever😉
The album was called Hi-Infidelity. Infidelity is cheating on your spouse. The Hi Fi was highlighted in the album title. This song along with Take It on the Run hit the charts in 1981.
@@robkrasinski6217 Yes Rob. I've been a fan for nearly 50 years. I'm very aware of all of their releases, how Hi Infidelity made them stars literally overnight and how the title came about.😉
@@curtisphilumalee1447Yes, I grew up near Champaign, Illinois, their hometown. Saw them on the Hi Infidelity tour at Assembly Hall in Champaign. I can only imagine how they felt to come back home and play large venues.
Man, when he looks into the camera and sings, “And even though I know about those men,” I would say, “If looks could kill.” I’m wondering if he’s thinking about someone while singing. (The guitarist surely is no Randy Rhoads but he’s a bit like Shultz from Boston. Both guys play really nice solos that fit perfectly into the context of a song. I don’t know this guy’s name but he’s pretty smooth.)
He wrote this to his wife that cheated on him. Very few guitarists were Randy Rhoads but Gary Richrath was waaay up there. I had the good fortune of seeing them both live. Gary features on many of their songs and was the original leader but was forced out later. Golden Country was a ripper, for example. Dude was a Rockstar in every sense of the word...RIP
REO played a few times at the Sunday free concerts at Lincoln park in Chicago, circa 1969. A tough year for me as I was “busy” flunking out of Lane Tech high school but those shows down there were special. They also played at the end of a huge anti war protest march in downtown Chicago in 1970, I think. What a different landscape we have now.
I had this on 8-track, and it LITERALLY changed programs at the start of this solo! Don't know if 'WTF!!' was yet a thing, but I know I exclaimed whater tge equivalent was at the time! Great memories of great times. We didn't know how great the 80's were until they were gone.😢
i wanna give it the thumbs up, but it's at 420 thumbs ups and i wanna leave that number there for now... ;p if I had to pick just one, I think this is the one REO song i really enjoy
I’ve been reading lyrics of old songs lately, just for fun. I read the lyrics just now for “Keep On Loving You” (KOLY). It seems like it’s about a guy who has a girlfriend who maybe had some affairs although he still loves her anyways, even though I guess she’s a bit of a snake. But it’s unclear to me if they’re still a couple and he leaves that a bit ambiguous. I’m guessing they’re not but it’s only a guess. Anyways another excellent song by REO, a band that I underrated when I was young and pretty dumb. (I wonder if this song is autobiographical? I’ll have to maybe look into that later.)
The maths and the related concepts related to the potential rise and fall/destruction of alien (to us) civilizations is both mind blowing and awe inspiring.
@@emptylikebox yes. No question about it here. The music today, I can't listen to it. Stores are playing it and it literally drives me out of the store - its that bad to my ears/soul.
Lost too soon. Gary had a beautiful tone and sound of that guitar. RIP
It's one of the most poppest, hookest, rock songs ever. This is truly memorable!

That DOUBLE handed pick slide Gary does at 1:56 gets me every single time.
He gave himself a little smile at how well he pulled it off!
Gary Richrath..one if the absolute best guitarists
Best pick slide ever!!!!
Such a classic. I really appreciate the willingness of Midnight Special to share this amazing content. REO was monster back in the day!
Glad you enjoyed it!

If I could only go back in time.

Top of my REO favorites! Excellent performance! 😌💜
So good!

All we need is "Keep Pushin'" from 1977 and it's complete❤.
Love that song too, had forgotten about it Ty

SO SO like to the studio versión..wooow!!
Love me some live REO, but in this clip I'm astounded how much the drummer favors Neil Diamond!?!! 😂
Timeless!!!!
Gary is the superstar in this band. Great album.
Epic guitar solo
Great guitar solo from Ray Liota.
una joya...mucha banda...mucho tema
Kevin sings the living ++++ out of this song!
Those sustained RRRRs always bugged me.

Gary Richrath was so goddamn smooth.
I love Gary …. How he plays his guitar such a class guy and He is very sexy by then great looking guy
Wth is wrong with the RRHOF and they haven't inducted REO and Bread. They're insane!

Hello from the 🇵🇭
Which one of the member of REO Speedwagon passed away? Sorry I forgot his name
Gregg Philbin died on October 24, 2022.
@@DougsterCanada1 Gregg Philbin? Is that singer or guitarist?
@@chenlicaraanbeceraofficial10The original bassist, he left the band at this point.
@DougsterCanada1 aww so sad for what happened to Gregg Philibin
If Howard Stern and Dennis Leary had a baby that’s what he’d look like.
Hmmm. Why do I think that electric guitar ain't being played?
Good song but this was the beginning of the end for REO.
Agreed. They sold out to pop 40 radio
Don't think the solo was live🤔🤔
Not the best vocal performance, but still awesome
Kevin is pitchy on this performance - in my opinon. However, I'll still take it over auto-tune. Gary is awesome, as usual.
ya but least he can sing, unlike most performers nowadays, thats why they need auto tune!
I would always prefer hearing someone perform live even if they are a little pitchy over some auto tune or lip sync just to sound perfect.
