In last week's video, we discussed issues I was having with my 2024 Outback Wilderness after only 12k miles. Today, we go over the findings from the incredible community of people who helped put some of my fears to rest. I want to thank everyone who took the time to comment on that video and provide not only their experience but also their knowledge of the problems that were presented. Thanks for the updates on the issues. I've really loved my outback wilderness because it provides a good balance between a daily driver and the ability to still get out in the back country. The stuttering stops had concerned me when I first started feeling them, but they did get less noticeable as I put more miles on the car. I'm glad to know it seems to be more of a normal functionality, although it still is not desirable as it tends to speed up during the down shifting when trying to stop sometimes. I'll have to check in with the dealer and see if the relearning will help out. Thanks for also pointing out some other things to keep an eye on, I wouldn't have thought about the front seal so that was very helpful.

Thank you for the update. I’m glad that you spoke to the issue of the chattering when applying to brakes. When I next take my wilderness into Subaru for service request the “relearn”for my CVT.

Thanks for the update I can rest easy now knowing your issues are mostly sorted. Damn shame on the Nomads was considering it but after hearing they suck in the snow and are loud I will be sticking with the G015 for the time being. Glad you got your Mojo back, you do ride them hard and I figured the best person to discovery a fault would be you. Anyway keep us posted on the transmission leak if it is that dying minds want to know.
Can’t entirely confirm it’s the tires, but it’s going to be the first place I start. First a rotation before I swap them out. I will definitely keep everyone posted!
@@roamingwithjosh Do you still have the stock tires and wheels? Might want to do a quick swap instead of going another 12K miles to find out the real answer.

Thanks for the update! The stuttering - I experience it in my 24 XT Touring from about 3k mi to current (at 3.3k mi). We have an 18 Crosstrek and don’t have that issue. In fact the Crosstrek has been bulletproof since new and we’re at 43k mi and has even been on 15” Methods and Yoko G015’s since new.

That's interesting about the tires. I've had the nomads on my FW for around 19k miles and haven't had a single issue with them yet. Good to hear the other issues were figured out.

Thanks for the update! I can't count how many BFGs sets I have gone through over the years... And usually go back to. It's almost always been sidewall strength on sharp rocks with other tire brands. I got a flat on the geolandar last weekend and it looks like it's in the tread from a sharp rock (super slow leak). A fair bit of 3 wheel action on the rocks 😂. Another small note about the CVT it definitely stutters a lot more pulling my 5 by 8 trailer with the Kodiak 700 on it. Through the mountains... The one time I don't recommend using cruise control. I use the brakes more than the transmission/ engine RPM. And that seems to keep it relatively happy.

1) I'm new to your channel but I'm considering my first Subaru and looking at the Outback. BUT I'm concerned about a lot of things.
2) I watched your previous vid after this one and then returned and watched this one again.
3) Your concerns after 12,000 miles are totally warranted. You absolutely SHOULD be concerned when you hear whining in the cabin, you should be concerned when you have stuttering stops, you should be concerned with all these things after only 12k miles. That's WAYYY TOO SOON to be experiencing issues.
4) You should read your warranty VERY carefully. Dealership are notorious for denying warranty claims and blaming customers. SO while you rest comfortably thinking you're protected, the dealership does not have your back. They're a business and when they have to do warranty work, they don't get paid nearly as much. Times a really tough and companies and people are struggling. Dealerships will use ever possible thing to deny a warranty claim and that means keeping up on all your scheduled maintenance. If you can't prove that you had it done, they'll use that to deny it.....well some dealerships do. They are not your friends. If they say no to your asking for them to fix an issue, what's your recourse? Hire an attorney and sue them. This gets expensive really fast.
5) You're having to troubleshoot issues on a car way too soon. Yeah you seem to feel better that it's normal for Subraus and/or that you may have some understanding as to what's causing these issues, that gives a false sense of hope however. The fact remains, most cars and SUVs never have these kinds of issues until they start approaching 100k, some don't ever have issues like this. To be having them at 12k....ridiculous.
6) Look up LEMON LAWS in your state. ONe could argue that your transmission issues would make this a lemon, after all, can't drive the car if the tranny is screwed up.
Finally trust your instincts. Bro you were about to side with your wife's instincts and sell the car cuz you were seeing so many issues. Now a little while later you're OK with it again. I don't know you but honestly this seems like you're just too infatuated with the vehicle to be objective about it. If that's true then you might want to just trust your wife's instincts and punt the car....cut your losses so to speak.
Anyways thanks for the detailed info. I realize every car is different but these are some disturbing issues at such low miles.
I appreciate the comment! After doing my research I have found out that the "issues" aren't to be concerned about, but common with CVT transmissions. Still getting rid of it though.
@@roamingwithjosh - yeah man - I'll tell ya this vid of yours has really made me gun shy of CVTs. I'm not sure if your issues are common with CVTs or if it's just the Subaru CVT. When buying a new car, you really shouldn't have any issues until 50k and more like 100k. That's my expectation and 12k....that's completely unacceptable. Ugh I just don't know what to buy cuz even conventional trannys aren't bullet proof. I just had to rebuild my Ford after only 78k miles so I'm still reeling from this crap. People like to talk about Subarus as being as reliable as Toyota but I don't see it that way at all. EVERYONE I've known who has had a Subaru has had issues and some of them have been awful. I REALLY don't trust the brand.

Personally I think 245/65R17 on the OBW is a big mistake.
Firstly for ride. They are rated to carry almost 600lbs more per tire than the 225/65R17.....111 weight rating vs 102.
So if you keep OE pressures the ride is going to be much stiffer just from the design of the tire.
Secondly, they look silly so jammed in the wheel well (proximity to lower corners) that it just looks like you're trying to make it something it's not. You need that room for mud/snow build-up, depending on what you do with the vehicle.
Thirdly, and really most importantly, I don't think people realize how much power they are taking away when they go up in tire sizes. The OBW has 8% shorter gearing than the standard Outback. When you go 245/65R17 tires, you are giving 4% of that back. Most people think the only difference is the tire weight, but that's false. With a larger tire, the engine has to move the 4000lbs vehicle further with every rotation of the tire. That reduces available power/TQ.
Plus your actual speed is 4% higher than indicated, which could possibly toy with some of the drivetrain electronics...shouldn't, but might.
Could also put a bit more strain on the CVT, especially when trying to crawl over something from a stop because the larger tires mimic taller gearing.
I did go 235/65R17 BFG Trail-Terrain on my '24 OBW and have had zero issues. The weight rating on them is only 104, which is only about 110LBS more per tire, so ride was not affected. Looks much better in the wheel well, and only put gearing out 2% from OE.
With my RalliTEK coils only, and 235's I gained 1" ground clearance, and for the vehicle that it is, that's more than enough.
As for the transmission shutter, I installed an Anderson Design heavy duty transmission insert when my car was 3 weeks old. I have never felt anything from the transmission since.

Similar to your case, I have a 2018 Outback Premium (previous Gen but Japan made) with recently installed the Ironman 4x4 suspension kit (the OEM had a leak and took it to make this small upgrade) and installed the 245/65 R17 on the original rims) BFG Trail-Tarrains, also included the Rallitek transmission insert and changed the rear sway bar to the 19mm diameter). And apart of having the higher ride I fell like before not more rigid no more soft, and look amazing ;)
And for the stop issue and the sound in the transmission, also do not have that in this generation. Hopefully will not show, plus my OB do not travel to much (only 22K Km) in almost 6 years.
I recommend Falken Wildpeaks over BFG for this purpose, but I get wanting to run what you know. The Falkens are fantastic though. Full recommend.

I tried the "relearn". It did nothing for the wobble. My CVT starting failing at 62,000, was replaced at around 70,000 and the replacement CVT has even a worse wobble on acceleration.

ADF makes a CVT anti wobble bushing and a Rear Differential Lock Out Bushings, those might help some, are pretty inexpensive and look easy to install. They are on my short list of future mods.

Only have about 3k miles so far, so we'll see if they have similar issues to your nitto nomads at higher mileage. i also paired mine with a set of sparco wheels which were lightweight to offset tire weight increase. running 235/65r17 and the overall weight is the same as factory 🙂
I've heard good things about the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires. They are all terrains, but triple mountain and such so should be good. Maybe something to consider.
My buddy has a pair and he really likes them. I’m just going to stick to what I know and can rely on.

Sorry stupid question , did you take the vehicle to get checked out when you encountered the issues or just look into it yourself ? I just bought an outback and didn’t know if you went to the dealer to check it out and they said nothing wrong or just check It yourself ? Thanks
These are all observations I made before taking to a dealer. I personally haven't had the best luck when trying to explain to a dealer my issues.

Very interesting. I’m glad you posted this. I’m guessing the “wobble” that folks feel when accelerating (me included) is also the torque converter. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fake shifting they have programmed the CVT to do. I too, have been considering the next set of tires, I’m pushing 30k now and plan to replace them before winter. I had Falken Wildpeak and the Nitto Grapplers on my short list. I’m looking forward to hear what more you learn. Also, you’re absolutely right about Reddit being a rabbit hole. A lot of good information but it can be a real chore getting it flushed out.
The wobble is on every Subaru CVT as stated to me by a service manager. It is worse when towing or accelerating fast.

@@jimbrown7261 It's concerning to me. My wobbling CVT failed at 62,000 miles. All that shuddering has to mean that something is not engineered cleanly and is causing more wear and tear.
Then when I went to trade my Outback, they told me that a vehicle with 82,000 miles had lost 75 percent of it's value. My Subarus with a real transmission held their resale value much better.
The wobble has nothing to do with the fake shift points. My wobble was the same before and after the dealer programmed in the fake shift points.
I have Nitto Nomad Grapplers on my 2024 CT, and I have 24k miles on them and have had no issues. I know it’s not an OBW, but I wonder if you just got a bad set of tires.

Thanks for the update. Having read how so many other OBW owners experienced the same issue, caused potentially by the tork converter, it was concerning to say the least. Question, can you explain sponsorship for your channel? Does CZcams charge you to upload a segment? Or is it just a promo, plug or commercial more so than financial compensation? Curious how that all works? I get sponsoring a little league team that needs money for expenses to field a team, uniforms, travel etc. I get it if you're flying to Switzerland to film a segment on skiing or mountain climbing costing a ton of money and needing sponsorship to help pay for how expensive a trip that would be. But sitting in your garage to film a segment and then uploading it, is doing that type of segment expensive? Don't get me wrong, I do understand it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to film and edit your content. Just curious about the whole sponsorship element works considering some creators do it and others don't. Thanks, I always enjoy your segments. Being from the south, I sure could use some sort of a brisket sponsorship.

Honestly, It depends on the sponsorship. The one with adventure rig shop is good because I’m able to get the products I want when I want them without having to beg. They sell stuff, and I get to build cool cars. It’s a great thing for both of us. This isn’t my job and I don’t rely on it for any of the things I do. It helps pay for car payments which allows me to continue to get new cars. It takes more time than people think, close to 8 hours per video regardless of where you shoot it. Hope that helps clarify a bit.

I have 2024 obw, 235 Falken Wildpeak AT4W, 16,000 miles and I have a VERY SMOOTH RESPONSIVE RIDE. Factory suspension, caTuned brush bar, that's all. Ko2s might not be the best, it'll work, but try Falken🍺

Does anyone else hear a sound that sounds like a "DONG" that happens after driving for a while? From what been able to find on reddit, someone posted a video with the exact same sound and everyone was diagnosing this as a sound coming from the AC pump. When I turn the AC in the car off or turn the fans all the way off, this noise stops.
Does anyone know what the real cause of this is and if there is a way to fix it?

Would a relearn possibly help with the car having more power off the line? Sometimes from a dead stop the cvt wants to go and other times it sits and thinks for 2 seconds before the car has any sort of power. I was making a left turn the other day and had plenty of room before oncoming traffic became an issue and it was so slow to go i thought i wasn't going to make it lol.

I suggest puting your stocks back and compare. I have 23k on my Nomads on a honda passport and they ride the same since i bought it. Seems your having more issues with this OB than the white one. You know how it is sometimes once you notice 1 thing then you notice everything😂

All due respect get a real tire like BFG KO3! I run ko2s and I absolutely love them in all weather and conditions. They have also worn better than any other tire I have ran.
K02s are not the best in rain and snow, hopefully they updated the k03s properly
