Programming Custom GMRS & Ham Channels On A KG-1000G, KG-905G, KG-935G And Other HAM Or GMRS Radios

- CLARIFICATION: I accidentally changed the TX frequency on repeater channel 23 from "467" to "462", and then copied that to custom channel 45 - Do as I say, not as I do, as this would make it impossible to use these fictional repeaters..
In this short video I go over how to program custom channels and add custom repeater channels on most GMRS and ham radios. In this example I use a Wouxun KG-935G, but these basics apply to most GMRS and ham radios - all brands including Baofeng, Radioddity, Retevis, and Midland.

I still use my Commodore 64 computer to program my radios.
Great use for those old machines! I have a friend that does the same thing.
I almost have a hard time following along just because I'm laughing so hard. I am a novice to both HAM and GMRS, but find your humor to be spot on for both realms. Thank you for continuously calling out the basement dwellers that have plagued us all for so many years. Love it. So glad I came across your channel! Be well.
Thank you so very much for this video, I’m new to the GMRS radio and this content helped me tremendously.
Hey man, you look just like I do! Are you trying to impersonate me or something?
😁
Your videos seem to appear at the right time for me. When I have a bad or difficult day, you create a fun and educational video. Keep up the great work, you may not realize it but you make a difference in other people's life.
you amaze me with all of your knowledge in so many subjects , you must spend alot of reading and remember all that you read . I really enjoy your videos weather it's about different radios or off roading. just wanted to thank you for all that you have done to help so many of us.
He’s married.
You sound amazing without a pop screen. Thats because you position the mic to the side like all radio operators should do.
“Sad Ham”… 🤣🤣. You are a literal gift to the Ham and GMRS radio community! Keep up the great vids!
i never get bored watching your videos! thank you for respecting my time.
Man, you fixed this place up. Nice job.
This seems so easy, I can even do it. I just ordered the Wouxun KG-905G last night so I am looking forward to getting the pair and doing what you just showed. Thanks.
New follower & two-way radio operator here. Thanks for making programming of my Wouxun KG-935G possible. And learning so much more from your channel.
Thank You , Randy, for this video.
I recently ordered, (on back order) the Wouxun KG-UV9G PRO, GMRS Two-Way Radio, and I appreciate this brief tutorial on the ease of programming of Wouxon radios.
Much easier to program than my Motorola XPR series portable and mobile radios in my possession.
Keep doing what your doing!! 👌
Thank you for this, I just received my 2 KG-935Gs to start my adventures into GMRS. I have been playing around with them, but not having anyone in my area with a repeater, so I have been watching what you have been up to, and how to. So now I have a great place to help me thru this. Again, thank you.
Thanks for this video. I'm new GMRS license holder and just got the Wouxun KG-935, so this will be helpful.
Great video! I own the KG-805G, KG-905G, and arriving tomorrow, the KG-935G! I have watched your videos for a long time and they are superb! My local law enforcement, ems, fire, etc...is using analog so I will be able to use this for my gmrs use while scanning. Ham operator here also (not a sad ham). I can finally ditch my HAM HT as a scanner!
Another Great tutorial . just got my kg935G yesterday , thanks again
I very much enjoy your videos, cant stop laughing at the HAM radio comments since i work with logs of engineers. My late father was a ham radio, the good kind. I have purchased the 905g and KG-1000 for my RV and your feedback was extremely helpful. Looking forward to use the videos with my family to better understand GMRS world. Agree this is 99% of my needs.
Awesome Job. Was able to learn something new about programming my 935g. Thanks.
Thank you sir this video was super helpful getting my KG-935G plus with my jeep clubs GRMS repeater set up keep up the great videos
PS the ham guy I’m the club is crying about the Roger beep 😂😂
The radio will actually moan and wheeze when you've penetrated the probes in the holes correctly.
-and queef.
@@greglawrencemusic 😂
Thanks for explaining the steps the simple way. As I use my trusted APPLE II PLUS, I had to do some additional work to modify the cassette cable... 😉👍
Finding the ADB to USB drivers is the real challenge. ;)
Great job showing this software and programming. Looks extremely easy. After watching a lot of your videos, I bought a used Motorola XTS5000 to essentially use as a P25 Trunked Phase 1 scanner. Managed to get everything working properly. It is nice and everything, but not dead simple like you made this video - lots more configuration for those LMRS trunked systems. Love the channel, the content and the jokes/sarcasm! Keep it up! Thanks for this content!
Also, I recently got my GMRS license because of you. Thank you for enlightening us all!
Finally a video I’ve been waiting for….
Yes, I feel both the bits and bytes are ordered in such a way that makes it preferred to use a Commando 64 for programming 🤣
As always, thanks for another entertaining and informative video.
Laptops are fine, as are desktops. Personally, I chose to modify the MC-10 serial interface on my TRS-80 (legit - I really do have one that works!) and whipped up a BASIC program to update several HT models. I like a challenge.
Thanks. I usually use my Commodore 64 to program my radio. It always detects the calm port properly.
This was really above my head I was completely lost.
Great video - and love “The Kramer”!!!!
Concise and well done as usual...thanks
I now have purchased 2 hand-held HTs and a mobile from this guy's recommendations .. and I still don't know what a rubicon is .. or why he's not one of them .. whatever, I don't care .. his reviews are fantastic and his humor and my beer are quite enjoyable.
I loaded my KG-1000 the other day with my Commodore 64. It took a minute but it's doable!
Rock of the 80's. Richard Blade's deep voice, "K-ROCK!" is ringing in the air now.
I used the cable with an Atari game system from 1973 and was able to play Pong on my radio. Later, when I was drunk, I accidentally plugged my Wouxun cable into a wall outlet at home and now every radio in the house can hear our local repeater. Sadly, they're set to narrow band and the volume is low.
As always, I gave Randy an upvote as the video was starting. As always, I had no regrets in doing so.
Thanks for this! I'm getting a little smarter everyday
Good tutorial, thanks.
Great videos, I have learned a lot from them. When is Jonny Quest going to make it to the "Big Board"?
Thanks for the info.
Good old Commodore 64 Computers Aww the simple old days When everything didn't take up 500 plus gbs for a software Randy @3:36 @NotaRubicon Productions
Very good video❗️👍
Thank you for the information.
Great Video!! I’m having some trouble installing the software onto my PC.
Thanks - I’m about to give it a go.
I checked in with David Lightman, who uses GMRS with his wife Jennifer and their kids, and he actually still uses his IMSAI 8080 computer to program his GMRS radios!
Thanks so much this helps so much
Great video
coming tomorrow "Programming custom sad hams" my favorite viewer lol
Loving all your GRMS videos!I have searched high and low. Can you program new frequencies from the radio keyboard? If so, what is the process?
I program mine using a VIC 20, it's all i need and still works like new.
Thank you for making this! I can confirm that the lower-priced programming cables are temperamental, as the El Cheapo model will only work on my Amiga and not my Commodore 128. Any idea if Wouxun's cable will work on Vic-20? Bowcheng's cable won't play nice with it.
Rum Ham is Best Ham.
This is the first time EVER in my life that I am the first commenter. Great video Randy!
Ya beat me to it lol
@@ephjaymusic Sorry my friend. I'll do better next time. lol
The difference between a laptop and a desktop, or a Commodore 64 or a TRS-80 is like the difference between wide and narrow band--a total mystery
Can I use your voice as a message tone? I want my phone to say "Wouxen; Ocean" every time I get a text message...😍
Thanks for the amazing content as always!
Perfect. Just got the KG-XS20G Plus and cable. Concise instructions.
Nitpik: Rptr Ch. 23 and your Copy/Pasted Best Repeater have both TX/RX at 462.550, no 5k offset. I know you're a detail guy, right?
I plugged my programing cable into my Wouxun KG-1000G and then my1980s Epson HX-20 laptop computer. Smoke and fire started coming out of the computer. I said "Oh My God!" and a big booming voice came from the radio and said, "YES MY SON?"
As a best use practice should you leave the 8 repeater channels as they are and go to empty channel numbers below 30 and add travel repeaters, scanning vhf/uhf stuff there. Both of my radios are Wouxun and the really don't care where same frequency/ different pl tones go. I do this for consistency in my program scheme.
I arrived at same conclusion...
Thank you
Thanks!
Thanks Bro! ... For Real, Well done and Many Thanks from a neeewBee GMRS user!!
Keep The Rubber Side Down!
So I recently updated my Commodore 64 to a Commodore 128, I am using the Serial bus interface to connect my USB cable and everything seems to be just fine. Thanks for the tips!
Hi Randy thanks for this video. Question My son in law bought two KG-935G Plus but he's having issues programming it from the keypad. I went to the Wouxon site but this radio or KG-935g does not show on their site. Can he use this software you are using for the Plus and where can he download it from. Thanks for all you do we enjoy your humor and videos.
Ralph
He can get the KG-935GPlus software from BuyTwoWayRadios at this link: www.buytwowayradios.com/wouxun-kg-935g-plus.html
Great vidoes very helpful. Brand new to the GRMS world.
Have you heard of anyone having issues installing the KG-935G programming software?
Its made to run on Windows, so, yah. "Issues" are a Windows feature.
Thanks for the videos. I purchased a TIDRADIO TD-H5 and installed chirp however it keeps saying radio not found. I verified the plug is all the way in and tried updates for the supplied cord but still no luck. I'm using windows 10. I'm new to GMRS so I'm trying. Thanks for any info
I think my Timex Sinclair 1000 will work great to program the radio!
Beware trying that unless you firmly secure your 16k RAM pack or you risk losing your data.
Good overview, does this software also run on the Mac ?
No.
Great video's man!!! I always liked and enjoyed radios. because of your videos I just bought my first UV-5R.
Fyi you do play corny music 🎶 😆 Im just kidding.
I had hoped you or one of the knowledgeable viewers would see my plea for help and respond but after all this time I don’t think it is going to happen. I’m holding my hands in the air and tapping my finger to my thumb. On both hands.
Thank you for making this helpful video! Is it possible that I can download and save the KG-UV9G’s pre-programmed GMRS + SHTF channels as backup and load them into another radio, i.g. KG-1000G or KG-935G GMRS ?
If the software for the UV9G allows you to export the channels, and if the software for the KG1000G allows you to import the channels, then yes. There may also be other, more complicated ways.
I havnt used the software for either to try this and I dont remember if either allows import/exporting.
@@TheNotaRubicon thank you sir for your help!
Hi . Love your video's. One issue I have is after programming in Repeaters on CH 18, 19 and 20 along with changing the names the display on my 935+ still show CH-18, 19 and 20 and the Default RPT channels now show "CH" in stead of "RPT" What did I do wrong or incorrectly?
you have to program repeaters on the repeater channels, which start at CH23. Channels 18, 19,20 are simplex-only channels.
There may also be a setting ( i dont remember for sure, someone will have to check the manual) for displaying the name, channel, or frequency on the display, so you want to be sure that is set for Name.
I bought the KG-UV9G from Buy Two Way Radio using your code. I needed to reset it to factory but it didn’t reset with the programming. I only have 2 channels. After conversation with the dealer I know I did it correctly. He said something was wrong but if I sent it back in he might charge me to program it. I said hell no. This software your using will it program this radio back as it came to me about 2 months ago? Question 2: I bought the cable and software when I purchased a KG-935G. I tried installing it on my Mac laptop and my Mac Mini but it says the disk is blank. Will it only work on a PC? The cable isn’t seen on a Mac. Thanks and I really like your video format, no bullshit just business and no music.
I need to get a new serial to USB converter converter for the old commodore before I can program my radios.
Noticed a potential pitfall..On the repeater channel at 8:33, when you clicked the RX tone dropdown, it changed the TX freq back to the simplex frequency.
I don't know if this is a bug in the software, or something that happened in the edit, but it is worth keeping an eye on if programming repeater splits.
Sloppy editing.. I'm still learning how to use this new Windows Movie Maker program.
Thank you for the video. I do have a question about programming without using software (I have all Macs), the default frequency settings do NOT match the table in the KG-935g manual. I assume I have to make them match. for example, GMRS channels Tx/RX should be the same frequency, etc., for repeater channels, is Tx the first frequency when you press the mode button?
Hello Jim, Did you get this cable to work with the cable he has on here. I really need one for my KGuv9g pro radio?
I have all Mac as well
From my understanding from 1 to 22 GMRS channels their frequency is fixed you can't change them
But you can make or change repeater channels frequency from 23 to 30 right?
For the purposes of more private communication is there any issue with going off the established GMRS channels and just programming all my radios with an "in between" frequency like 468.100. Or do I have to use one of the established GMRS frequencies?
If you are using an FCC Part 95 "GMRS" radio it wont do that.. You would need a ham or LMR radio that allows transmitting in that frequency range.
@@TheNotaRubicon Thank you
Like the software. Can that software be used on Baofeng radios such as the UV-5R, BF-F8HP, etc? TIA
no
I have a PC03 cable that I bought for my BTech does that cable work for the kg935G
Hello and Thanks for the video. I do have a question, first im very new two the GRMS world, I'm just taking the first steps in learning how to use the system. I find your Videos very helpful. now too my question, I was watching this vid and went to purchase the programming cable you haver listed in the more section. I noticed the cable come with a CD im thing drivers. you made the statement that for it to work we would not have to download drivers, basically plug and play. I have the KG-905G. im just making sure I purchase the correct cable. one last question is it possible to program using MAC?
You should not need the drivers or anything on the CD. The software for the KG905G runs on Windows so to program it on your Mac you would need to install Bootcamp or Parallels to run windows on it.
You can also do all the programing directly on the radio with no computer at all.
Awesome thank you very much for the fast response and information. I'm sure ill figure it out in time. I apologize for all the finger checks in my first email I hadn't had my first cup of coffee yet.
Thanks
Wallace
Stick the plug in the hole. Some holes are tight. You may think it's in but it's not in...so press firmly.... UMMM!!
I have a UV9GX and the "red" cable, I have downloaded the software, installed the drivers and chosen the correct port, I can not read anything from the radio, any advise?
Still wondering how the picture in the background keeps changing, and why, LOL. Great videos.
The picture is a TV monitor on the wall. It changes...because it can.
Remember - never trust what some random know-it-all in the CZcams comments claims as fact. Mr 2 by 2 Hands of Blue is completely wrong.

@@TheNotaRubicon HAHA! I got pinned. #MYGA! Love the channel! I guess your poster collection is as vast as your T shirt collection?
If I wish to save all the programming changes to an additional, identical radio, how do I do that?
my Tandy 200 worked (despite the low baud rate)
Can someone please tell me how to get rid of the 4 beeps when mic is keyed up and when i let off the ptt it beeps 4 more times but you can only hear it on a recieving radio? Ive tried about everything i can find on the programming program.
Can you do this programming without the cable and software?
Can you program channels a KG-905G on the radio itself? No computer
TIA
I am a true noob. Just got my GMRS license and a KG-935G. I don’t have a windows pc. I like to listen to local skywarn repeater(146.640), is there a way to store it manually? When I enter the frequency and press MENU I get the screw-you beep.
Looking at buying a gmrs ht for capability of using repeaters. Would by programing cable from my uv5r work on wouxun 935?
Nvm i should of watched the video before asking that question. My bad!
poor oh sad hams. do you have a video of programing same radio with out the software
Does anyone know what the "Call Setting' in the software does and is it useful at all?
getting your car mounted and hand held matched up is as easy as copy & paste
If only it were that simple.. Unfortuanly MOST programs wont let you copy & paste between them.. _Some_ will.. most wont.
@@TheNotaRubicon how sad, could you use a normal spreadsheet to copy over? should i stick to one brand of radio for the group? sorry forgot you've got a questions email for this, i'll go look for that.
I have a Wouxun KG XS20G. The radio club that I’m a member not only requires a TX PL tone but also have instituted a PTT 4 digit code…. In the programming software where would I insert that number …? Thank you in advance.
Probably the ANI which is menu option 43 and 44.
Thank you….i check it out.
Bill
I know that I probably sound like an idiot, but I have a mental block and I am brand new to radios. I want to set up a channel for private chat for family. I assigned the RX freq to one of our repeater channels and the tx freq to the same. now I am trying to set up the send and receive to 91.5 for both. how do I get the radio to go to that freq?
Most radios cant/wont transmit on 91.5Mhz.
Can this be done on a Apple iMac also?
Is the Wouxun program compatible with Chrome book? I just recieved my KG-935G and would love to be able to utilize the program without having to buy a laptop.
No, Chromebooks don't run Windows software.
With all the spam and malware out there these days, I just program all my radios on my etch-a-sketch.. No wifi connection so no possible way to get any infections....
I’m sorry but I just got my fcc license and I have noooo idea what any of the jargon means or about repeaters I’m totally new so I find the video hard to follow! I don’t have a map top just a desktop and an mmm now more confused than ever lol
I wish the software would run on a Mac. Or a Commodore 64.
I prefer the TRS-80 to programmy radios. Much more efficient
