  • Learn about Genealogy Software vs. Online Services. If you’re new to genealogy you may be asking yourself, how do I get started, what do I collect, where do I find this stuff, and how do I keep it all organized?
    Both online and software programs will allow you to keep family trees, ancestry data including vital statistics, records, photos, documents, newspaper articles, and more. They also have enormous search engines to help you find evidence for your family trees, as well as serving up hints where were to look.

    This is an informative, easy-to-listen to and well organized intro to genealogy video. Well-spoken presenter, very professional. Surprised to not see 100K+ views.

    Family Historian for the ease of data entry and the charting feature.

    I started with Ancestry, but thought I had gone wrong on a part of my family tree because it led to the British Monarchy. I struggled to find any documents to verify the gateway ancestor. So I joined Myheritage too, and I got a DNA match which only had the 'Angus' surname common with my own tree, and I discovered common ancestors there, so feel confident about this now. I have since discovered that King Edward IV is a common direct descendant of both of my parents, one through the legitimate line, and the other through an illegitimate son, Arthur Wayte. I did find an ancestor story mentioning a secret marriage with an old king, from one of my many American distant cousins, but wasn't expecting this. I find all of this so fascinating and love watching your channel

    I use Ancestry and Family Tree Maker. I have backed up my family trees to 2 hard drives.

    I am just getting started but was leaning towards familysearch and FTM

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 4 lety

      Just keep in mind that FamilySearch is one shared community tree. If you want a free option consider a free tree on Ancestry and sync with FTM. Then use FamilySearch for research.

    • @ikesays3
      @ikesays3 Před 4 lety +1

      How do I sync? Isn’t ancestry free edition the two week trial?

    • @ikesays3
      @ikesays3 Před 4 lety +1

      @@GenealogyTV ancestry is only 2 week free trial. I simply cant collect my information in 2 weeks to download to FTM. does ancestry.com have much more records/collections to search from more than others? If I buy FTM should I try and get my family who also have it or ancestry to send me their files to load into FTM before I put anything in it?

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 4 lety

      There is a difference between a Guest account and a Free Trial. Watch this episode. I talk more about it. czcams.com/video/V3t2xwY7zVE/video.html you can jump ahead to 4:45 minutes in the video to get to what I'm talking about. Also look for the free ebook about it.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 4 lety

      You can ask your family members down load a Gedcom File... then you upload it to your FTM or Ancestry account. Go to this video to learn more. czcams.com/video/67bUCUBV4gs/video.html
      That does not download the records. Between the two videos I sent you, you should have a better understanding of what you want to do.

    I use Heredis. A little difficult to get used to but it offers online connections to country specific archives such as wiewaswie.com for Dutch ancestry, and Riksarkivet for Swedish, and many other countries for free. I also like the graphics (I'm an artist :), charts, slideshows(really nice!) you can create. Also reasonably priced. I think I paid $40 but I could be wrong about that.

    Hi Connie,
    I have recently decided to research my family tree (I am a South African living in France), and i stumbled on your channel trying to figure what to do, where to start and what software to use. You mention using both online and offline software and services - my concern is security of information, especially for family still living. How secure is information really on a platform like ancestry or the offline softwares?

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 3 lety

      Ancestry works really hard to provide security to its members. If it were me, I'd build my tree on Ancestry and use FamilySearch for researching clues.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 3 lety

      Of course you would use Ancestry for research too. Software is good... but if you're just starting out... just use Ancestry. They are the biggest and between Ancestry and FamilySearch... you'll find most of the records that are available online. I don't know how many records for South Africa you'll find... that's beyond my area of expertise.

      Ancestry yes. Family tree maker maybe I just use Ancestry right now, and very rarely use Family Tree maker

  • @orianahdz7414

    I just found your channel and have subscribed. I am looking for a software so that I can save my family trees that I have in Ancestry.com. My sister and I share an account on Ancestry and she has Family Tree Maker. She was told that Family Tree Maker doesn't link with Ancestry anymore, so our family tree hasn't been backed up (copied, not sure of the terminology to use) in years . In your video you mentioned that you use Family Tree Maker. Is there another way of backing up our tree in Ancestry to Family Tree Maker? I am new to this. Thank you in advance for your help. I am going to watch your other videos. I'm sure they will be helpful.

    • @GenealogyTV
      @GenealogyTV  Před 5 lety +1

      Sorry for the delay in responding. Something is weird with my dashboard. Yes it still links. I recommend calling Family Tree Maker and or Ancestry. Trick... if you call Ancestry, call right at 9am eastern on Saturday morning before anyone else gets in the queue. Sometimes the wait is a couple hours. I'd start with FTM, they'll get you back up and running.

      Ancestry hides living people from others view. You can share your tree with others and decide if they are going to be able to see living people or not. I've been doing this for decades and have never had an issue.
