This song is about nature, life, farming, living as one with nature just as how the ancestors of our land lived and also how the animals are also inheritors of this world. The guy changed his voice to resemble a traditional song which is used among Tamil speaking people to lament the death of someone. In this song they are lamenting the loss of connection with nature and the traditions our ancestors have shown us.

The raspy voice you were talking about is called Oppari in Tamil.
It is an art form unique to Southern India especially Tamil Nadu. This art form consists of a singer usually a female, singing in a false voice with considerable vibrato and slide notes. It was widely used in funerals. The lyrics would consist of the achievements, memories and good things about the demised person and how much his/her friends miss that person.
It is also used as a medium to spread any bad news in a village (in those days, messages were conveyed to people of a kingdom by singing songs and beating a type of drum called 'Murasu').
The Tamil society was, many years back, split into different cultures with one group of people belonging to an upper caste, educated, wealthy sector, while the other group belonged to a more suppressed and poor socioeconomic class. Oppari used to be one of the art forms of the latter. Luckily such socioeconomic disparity and diversity is becoming less common in this modern era.
Even the people belonging to the upper class during those days have their own artforms which are also very highly celebrated in India called 'Carnatic music and hindustani'
India has such wide diversity of music and in this era people are more open minded and everybody is starting to appreciate every art form in India. This multi-religious, multi-casteic nation has helped us witness a large number of different types of music forms. Thanks for reading. Your reaction was great.

Here is one of viewers explanation
    Srinath G
Hi Guys... First of all, thank you so much for your genuine reaction. Also, as an Tamilan, I have my responsibility to explain this song with the exact meaning which is missing in the English subtitles.
“Parai” & “Murasu” (Musical instrument) is played in the beginning of the song.
“Parai” & “Murasu” is purely belongs to Tamil tribes (everyone thinks it's an African music played in the beginning) but it's not, followed by they showed “Salangai” wears in both the legs & hands which is followed by the Tamil tribes to express their feelings by the way of dance. This is mostly during auspicious moment, festival, wartime etc.,. Hope you have seen Salangai” wore in “Bharatnatyam” which is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is also one of the oldest classical dance traditions in India which is often are used to express Hindu religious stories and devotions.
So all this shown in the beginning of the song to make positive vibes. And then the soil is shaking. That means, the land is shaking/hearing/feeling/enjoying to the music. And the girl opens her hand from hiding and coming out to say what is emerging right now... rest is the song...
Grandpa is called as “Thatha” in Tamil
She is also singing “Cuckoo Cuckoo” hope everyone know it's a bird. But which bird? The answer is given in the next line. “Annakili Annakili” which is a name that has Tamil origin for girl/women and also it's name of the bird as well which is seen widely in Tamil Nadu 50 years back and now no more because of the expansion of development like Cellphone tower, the loss of forests, plains and other natural systems into agriculture, mines, and urban developments, the draining of swamps and other wetlands, and logging reduce potential habitat for many species
Let's move on further, somehow now you got the context of the song but still the subtitles are not the exact meaning represented in English which caused not understanding the deep message.
So the song start with saying Grandpa weeding out the fields and he finds a kingfisher bird in the trunk hole. The frog is swimming in the water. And here lyrics says the caterpillar is sister. How come? 🤷‍♂️ Because frog eats all kinds of worms except caterpillar since it has a toxic body condition. So caterpillar can go and stay near the frog without fear. This is the concept of these lyrics...
Further, the rapper is singing that my grandma’s has shrink bag (wallet) with betel (Paan) and nuts (Supari) which we have seen already in our life. And then he is telling his own lifestory about his grandma which you can refer the subtitles.
Now the girls is saying that our ancestors left this soil with all these blessings. Our forefathers lived across the river banks and did fertile fields. So at that time, every birds and animals felt safe and happy. Our ancestors also fertile the fields across the river and live happily. She also say that the lakes and ponds belong to everyone, not only for humans that includes birds and animals.
During middle of the song, especially, when the male singing part comes, it is consider as the Mother Nature is singing or saying that “I planted fives trees, Nurtured a beautiful garden, My garden is flourishing, Yet my throat remains dry” that means the Mother Nature gave us 5 element. They are Earth, Space, Water, Air and Land, then why are you still struggling to survive in this world? Because we have failed to save and look after nature. That's why people suffer from not being able to live with nature everywhere in the world. Everyone thinks that this guy is enjoying and dancing 🤦🏻‍♂️that's not the actual meaning of the video.
To conclude the song... the Mother Nature is also asking (when male singing part) ... This is a serious statement “What the matter my dear? my sugarcane? my grandson? and then it says “Bitter Gourd in my canopy, it has given us seeds, Left by our mom and dad... (By the time they shows the old man smiling and feeling happy) Everyone thinks that they are Farmers or Someone came without meaning... actually they are all our ancestor, they left the seeds through our mom & dad... so what is meant by “Seeds” (it's a hidden message) the exact meaning of “Seeds” represent the “Current modern lifestyle” who failed to save the mother nature. In result, Air pollution, Water pollution, poor management of waste, global warming, growing water scarcity, preservation and quality of forests, biodiversity loss, and land/soil degradation etc we face today.
Mother Nature is crying and lamenting to express the own grief and also want to share and assuage. Because of this strong message, this album got very popular all over the world.
At the end of the song, they show the group of people which is a root of how humans diversified from our ancestors to till date.
Thank you once again for your valuable time to read this lengthy message to get understand about this song 🙏🏼 ❤️ from Canada

The title “Enjoy Enjaami” has so much of meaning.
To the people who are unfamiliar about the title, “Enjoy” is combination of two words, En + joy (thaayi), narrated by the Rapper Arivu. “En” means “My” in tamil, "thaayi" is actually "Mother" in Tamil. Combinedly it is "My Mother" ... “Enjaami” is combination of two words, En + Jaami. “En” means “My” in tamil, “Jaami” is actually “Saamy” it means “God” in Tamil, combinedly “My God”.
“My God” i.e. "Enjaami" is how elderly people call their grand children or their loved ones in Tamil
Culture which is so so cute to hear that.
Even the farmers and labours use to call their Masters (Landlords) as "Enjaami" as a respect giving.
Likewise singer Arivu is called everytime as “Enjaami” by his Grandmother Valliammal affectionately in real
    life.

This normally sang by elderly people in a wake (funeral normally). It is the form of expression of pain from heart for loss of life. That change in his voice was he singing in his grandmother's voice. This song is basically about farmers and our ancestors who worked so hard to make this earth a great place to live but they are not given the due respect that they should get.
The first time he sings in his grandma's voice the lyrics go - I planted trees and made a garden. The garden grew to be very beautiful but my throat still remains dry. Its basically his grandmother mourning.
This song has really meaningful lyrics.

joey the instrument you were thinking about was i guess an old indian instrument called "SHENAI" which was there since the MUGHAL EMPIRE in india from the 17th to 18th century during the reign of emperor Aurangzeb. the shenai sounded very irritating to him so he banned it everywhere. but now after the mughal empire ended, the shenai is still used today.

Yes, he means something very deep that means alot to most of the tamilians.. And the real nature lovers. Who wants to safe guard the nature as it was before..
The writer tries showcase the roots of the origin of the tamil culture and not to forget, from where he has come .. and express deep feel if emotion in a "Oppari(ancient form of lamenting folk song)" to safe guard the nature and to conserve forest and its wildlife..
And when you say the scarchy vocal for the male. Thats the Oppari..

    Joey (Lucky Boy) Nato,
Ya know, if you click on the cc button you get Closed Caption subtitles, right? That's where the translated lyrics of this song reside.
The singer/rapper/writer here wrote this after long talks with his grandmother. Their people are the forest people of southern India who have been living in those forests for tens of thousands of years, since before agriculture became a thing in the world, perhaps even before spoken language became a thing. Yet, they are losing all rights to those very same forests.
This is a soft protest song in the voice of his grandmother who, along with others, spent 20 years shipped off to perform manual labor in sugar cane fields in another country. She was sent back without any promised money or land. She then went to work in the fields of local farmers in order to be able to afford to educate her son.
Her son went on to become a college professor who raised his own son and paid to educate his son to get an engineering degree, and then to get an MBA. That son chooses instead to follow his heart and became a rapper, singer, song writer who writes protest songs for the local film industry.

    Meaning of Oppari:
Oppari is an ancient form of lamenting in Tamil culture performed (cry singing) by a group of women emotionally when someone lost their loved ones, in which this ancient practice is still exists in Tamilnadu and other states of south India...
    Formation of Oppari:
A group of women form a circle holding each other's shoulder and facing each other and cry singing in a funeral spot..
    Content of Oppari:
The group of women cry singing the Oppari about the person who passed away, mentioning how good he lived his life in the past, his love towards the family members, his likings, his sacrifice to the family members, his happiness and sorrow, how much the family members loves him too, Praising him for what he did for the nature, everything..
    Why Oppari?
Oppari cry singing is not only a way of conveying messages to the public related to the deceased person in a funeral ceremony, but also a scientific way of releasing the stress of the person suffering from the loss of their loved ones. i.e. Psychologically helps to deal with emotions ..
“I PLANTED FIVE TREES, NURTURED A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN, MY GARDEN IS FLOURISHING BUT YET MY THROAT REMAINS DRY” IS A LAMENTING PHRASE USED IN OPPARI SONG USUALLY PERFORMED IN A FUNERAL PLACE IN TAMIL CULTURE.

Hi Joey, that sound panned to the left could be a melodica or an accordion? Additionally, this song was composed by a Tamil composer - Mr Santhosh Narayanan - has worked in more than 20 films and counting - creating songs and original background scores.
This ain't Bollywood, and Indian songs and movies are not just Bollywood fyi..
Dhee is the girl singing, Arivu is the guy rapping in Tamil and who also penned this song, recalling the stories (based on what I've understood from the song) of what his grandmother used to tell about appreciating and celebrating their roots and how mankind used to co-exist in harmony with nature - like how man lived to form a civilization.
The 'oppari' mentioned in the comments, are actually laments or wailing/ sobbing due to a sad situation, it jives with the meaning of the song. The meaning of the song can always be found on the internet, and it has deep meanings, it starts off really groovy and all but goes into this melancholic feeling halfway to the end.
Just my 2 cents... Thank you.
