  • We review the new BMW M2 Competition designed to be a more simple M sports car with two doors. With a slightly cheaper price tag, higher horsepower, rear wheel drive and a manual transmission option this may be one of the more desirable new fun cars to come out. We drive and discuss the technical side along with some talk on the new Toyota Supra. In the market for a Porsche, Mustang, or Camaro? The M2 deserves a look.

      @@kylenewberry8598 One shouldn't really compare a 2019 M2 Comp DCT $61,800 to a 2020 Supra Auto $49,990 since there is a noticeable price difference. The Supra exhaust note sounds good while the m2 is just ok. M2 has more top end, but the Supra is smaller and weighs much less. I will take a Supra over the M2 and I own a 2016 M3 since I want a smaller car. M2 comp also could have a spun crank hub failure when modded with an e85 tune like any other s55 engine.
      Supra should make 400whp with stage 2 tune while the M2 Comp with stage 1 will make 464whp and 494wtq. I still would buy the Supra even with the less hp potential since it should be more fun and more reliable.

    I own one with the Manual, and Ive tracked it several times on several tracks. If you leave the MDM mode ON, the diff does a great job of keeping it straight and not oversteer as you mentioned. You have to be a little patient with the gas. I noticed in the video you are get on the gas early in the turn. I find trail braking and going to gas later is how the car wants to be driven. I came from tracking a 911, and I think this car is a perfect balance for street and track. With Michelin Cup 2's, I think it will be that much better. I have made no modifications, all stock set up. I love how BMW tuned the torque. Its very linear in its delivery. I think its a great all around package, albeit its a heavy car at 3600 lbs. Oh and the tiny gas tank means Im always filling it up.

      @steveadp Před 3 lety +5

      @@teddybburns I have more experience with M2C but have driven the OGM2 and I would say besides the engine, the handling is better in all aspects. I 've heard it uses all the same hardware but the tuning is very different. Less body roll, and better dampening on the road. The M2 Comp can be tracked with no mods, may need to change brake fluid and eventually pads depending how often you track. Never tracked OGM2 but depending on your skill level not sure how much you notice. Im certain a more experienced driver could beat times of M2C in a OGM2. If the money doesn't matter go M2C.

      @Jlaw01 Před 2 lety +2

      @@wthisdaftpunk6847 that's such a hard question... I have drove both, the 2 series is literally a smaller version of a 3 series. First of all they are much different generations. I hate the sound of the s55 in the m2 comp and the s65 is a high revving v8, enough said in that regard. Its faster, smaller, more fun around turns, looks better in my opinion, is much more reliable, has that daily driving factor even though its smaller, its everything you could want in a sports car. However, its simply missing that v8 feel. The M2 is simply a better car in almost every way possible mechanically, would I still get one over an e92m3, I don't know. If you want to beat on it, have fun without worry, daily drive it, get this. If you want a car that puts a smile on everyones face based off the sound alone, get the m3. If you held a gun to my head, I couldn't tell you which I would rather have. Sound means so much to be when it comes to cars, and the s55 just is not it, its better in almost every single way so I will ask you this, how much does sound mean to you? How much does that raw emotional connection with your car mean to you?

Absolutely livable back seats and useable trunk and its a dream for a daily driver. Found it really informative hearing your thoughts on how the M2 Competition compares with the new Supra Mark. If Toyota provides you a Supra to do a longer in-depth review on, hope to hear your thoughts comparing the M2C again if you have some updated impressions. I guess the M2C's 'twichyness' or habit to oversteer compared to the new Supra could be to do with its narrower tyres front+rear. I wonder if the differential used in the Supra is identical to the one used in this M2C but programmed differently? Would BMW be generous enough to provide this S55 engine (or the S58 engine featured in the brand new X3M) to Toyota for their GRMN Supra version or whatever it'll be called..as that Supra has a shorter wheelbase than the 2011 BMW 1M coupe and the 86/BRZ, we could be looking at a deathtrap. Can't wait to see how the upcoming lightweight limited edition M2 CS/CSL will turn out.

    • @lourenco121
      @lourenco121 Před 5 lety

      If BMW offers a BMW Z4 M version with a S58, I do see the Toyota Supra being offered with the S58 in that case. I don't see Toyota offering a Supra with a S58 without BMW stepping up first with a M version of the Z4.
      You also need to consider the price difference for the S58 powered Supra could be $16k more for the end customer since it's not just the engine being changed. You have to add bigger brakes, improve cooling, DCT trans, wider wheels, wider tires, improved suspension tuning to keep the balance and cooling needed with the increased power. The much higher price point will make it harder to sell, but it will be an unique small fun fast car.

    • @oscarxms
      @oscarxms Před 5 lety +1

      @@lourenco121 on paper, the Supra is faster 0-60 than the M2 competition. The Supra is a compelling package at a slightly better price tag, regardless of the M-Badge on this car. Comparisons to the Supra will be inevitable once the Supra gets in the hands of the press, after it is released to the public. It will be interesting to see, if Toyota can make a better BMW than BMW.

    • @tomjones5166
      @tomjones5166 Před 5 lety +1

      @@oscarxms The new supra is already the better BMW for me compared the Z4 since it's not a convertible and it's around $13k less compared to the z4. If you look at Cayman vs Boxster, you see there is small price difference of ~$2100 while the z4 vs supra has a big price gap. Toyota Supra already won compared to the Z4 if you don't want a convertible and don't need the bmw badge.
      I personally wouldn't buy a m2 over the supra since the m2 is a heavier car and bigger car with two extra seats that I don't need. While m2 is more practical, I like the Supra more since it's an affordable Cayman or affordable Z4 coupe.

    • @lourenco121
      @lourenco121 Před 5 lety +1

      @@oscarxms I agree the new supra is exciting since it's a smaller sports car with great potential. I find there is more to a car in just hp and 0-60 numbers. I test drove the new BMW M2C and I decided it wasn't the car for me. Everyone has different tastes or wants in a cars. Reviews and comparisons are nice, but I find that I have to actually drive the car my self to get the real picture on how it feels to me. I found I liked the M3 over the M2 comp since I like the heavier steering effort found in the m3. M3 also felt more raw power wise. I am considering the Supra now since it's smaller car compared to the bmw m2/m3.

    • @smilepermile888
      @smilepermile888 Před 5 lety

      @@lourenco121 Yes no doubt, we'll see a Z4M Roadster if the Supra GRMN comes into fruition with the S58 engine, to probably be more competitive to the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4s. Granted the S58 may have more power+torque but those Porsches will still be quicker around corners so it could be a close comparison. And yes Tetsuya Tada enginner of the Supra+86 said that by adding power to the engine, it'll have an affect on the overall balance of the car, so you'll have to make changes to the rest of the car to compensate the increased acceleration +top speed performance. Aside from Toyota's collaboration with BMW, many stuck-up haters/trolls of the new Supra (including superspeedersrob who hasn't even driven the car yet) criticised its 'lack of power' (despite Car&Driver +MotorTrend quoting that the B58 is underrated on their dynos) and mentioned that they would be willing to spend more for 'better' performance. So maybe there could be enough demand for it, or they could actually be 12yr olds who jerk off to 2JZ Supras and Fast&Furious franchise who can't afford a cheap car.

Once a performance bargain at $67k, it is now $120k, and best of all, Car & Driver proved that there is ZERO performance gain between a 2012 GT-Darrr and the 2017 GT-Darrr Track Edition.
