Tom Bailey had a devastating fire in the braking area at the NHRA Gatornationals. Drag racing isn't easy, with all the crashes, accidents, and fires that can occur - but thankfully Tom got out okay.
Also in this video, we fix wheelie bars with a pickup truck.

Here after Cleetus’s video today. Crazy, glad you were fine though man!
Mad props to NHRA or whoever it is that organized this event having so much safety personnel on site today!! Makes me very happy
This video is a real testament to the hard work and experience the safety safari brings to the team as well as Tom being able to remain calm enough to safely get himself from the vehicle. Excellent job to all involved and look forward to seeing you all back on track!
I agree . That NHRA safety safari don't mess around !
My heart skipped a beat watching him get out of that thing while it was on fire.
As Cleetus once said, Never stay in, if you notice something unusual, first pop was a good sign.
and this is why Mullet is getting a serious fire system and why its going to spray Garrett directly
Glad you weren’t hurt! The car can be fixed.
I really appreciate you including the medical eval in the video and then explaining what went wrong. Learning experience for me and maybe a few others. Glad you are ok. Rebuild and keep kicking ass!
15 cent o ring caused 50k of damage. The fire suppression never had a chance with the fuel tank explosion and fuel spray everywhere. Your safe Tom and that's what matters. Everything else can be rebuilt.
I have no doubt as much as you love this sport that this car will be back in action sooner than expected and better than ever.
Everything on this car is so well laid out and engineered to perfection. The o ring had to be a tough pill to swallow. Keep doing you. With a sense of humor like that in the face of adversity how can you lose! Go beast mode!!
James Taal after having all his injector issues 👀👀
Oof
First thing I thought about to man !!
Please plug that firewall James...
Its was a o-ring that blew up the space shuttle. Glad you didn't blow up. Happy you and everyone is safe.
The O Ring on the space shuttle was a little bigger than this one and a lot more important.
An o-ring nonetheless.
@Bob Watters the o ring in the space shuttle claimed 10ish human lives and resulted in the loss of a billion dollar space craft.
@@BKetch well, herpes, it's still a useful comparison. Get over it.
@@BKetch: Richard Feynman used a glass of ice water to demonstrate that the o-ring material's properties changed at low temperature. This revealed that the material had not been thoroughly tested, and I'm sure the spec for o-rings nowadays lists a few more tests.
20:25 minus the little seatbelt hiccup, its nice to see a competent emergency response crew. GJ guys
I love how fast the safety safari dudes jump on that fire to save the car. If that were a house, in my experience, they would arrive at the scene, set up a perimeter, lay out all their gear, talk it over with the captain, then put out whats left of the fire.
Pretty even keel on explanation , thorough explanation, of all events involving the fire . Most of us would be throwing stuff and visibly upset. Pretty humble guys i respect that
That was probably the best tasting Bud Light in history lol
I bet y’all will have the car back up and running very soon. Glad your okay man
This video really shows that keeping your "cool" in situations like this is the difference between life and death or serious injury. Thank you for posting this and I'm glad you're alright. Can't wait to see the in-depth coverage and rebuild. Subscribed!
I know I'm repeating someone but that car can be fixed or replaced. Glad you made it out with zero issues to race another day.
Gosh DANG IT man....finally get the CZcams channel up and running and this happens...thats brutal. Glad you're okay. At least you have some content to rebuild it! Tough freaking break...
He will be back faster than ever!!!! There is no quit in Tom Bailey!!
Glad you got out without injury and I'm hopeful you guys are able to fix and improve. Thanks for sharing
Great that you're ok, Tom. Huge respect to you guys for total transparency and the detailed post-mortem on the incident. Awesome response from the Safety Safari.
Glad he’s okay! Was one of my favorite cars after seeing him run circles at the Freedom Factory. Hopefully it’ll be rebuilt soon!
Glad you're safe Tom. Looking forward to seeing her fixed up and ready to go again!
The car can be replaced, you can’t Tom! Glad you made it out ok. This should be a wake up call to everyone racing without a fire suit, fire suppression, sound firewall, appropriate fuels systems etc.
Glad you are ok Tom. Tough one to watch. A perfect example of why experience matters. Seeing the safety crew and stopping as close to them as possible shows amazing mental awareness. A very important lesson for all race drivers and rescue crews, reaction times matter at the tree and all the way down the track. This is an excellent video to remind everyone just how important the safety equipment is, yes it is expensive and most of the time a pain in the butt, except when you need it. So glad you are alright. Thanks for sharing this video.
Glad you made it out of there safely Tom! Just goes to show, an o-ring can take down the space shuttle and race cars
I was thinking the same thing
"So obviously whatever" Tom Bailey 2021 🤣👍
Wow glad you are ok, loved hearing the explanation of how the whole situation went down. I’m sure Steve will build the motor back stronger and better.. keep up the great work!
Glad you’re ok. Love to watch someone with passion to do what makes them happy. I’m sure you’ll build it back even better
It's amazing a 30-cent part can damn near cost you your life glad to see you got out and doing well
Glad you're good brother, big ups to the safety team for helping out.
Most calm and humble person I have ever seen. Glad to see you are well after this. When the doctor asked you if you smoked and you replied No, but I did just smoke a pack all at once, lol, What a beast.
Wow Tom. I raced for 15 years and I don’t think I could have been that calm. Glad you are fine and I’m sure you will be back better than ever. Keep the great work and channel.
Glad you are alright, a good reminder to practice getting out of the car in a hurry every once in a while
And pulling the fire bottle safety pin before starting the car.
@@bobroberts2371 are all you guys sure that’s how it works? I’m not arguing it just seems like as long as you know to pull the pin then it’s a lot safer then tire shake setting it off at 150mph plus and blinding the driver ? I truly don’t know
@@jasonsparshott7208 I posted this in another section and will repost here:
Race cars that use a mechanical trigger system that conceptually is a hand held type bottle with a remote valve trigger and tubing to direct the agent to different areas in the car. There are some electrical trigger systems but I'm not sure if they can be had with a heat sensor. I don't know of any race car system that is tied into shutting down the cars systems. Most race cars have an easily accessible battery shut off though.
In a race car, the safety pin should be out any time the driver is in the car and headed to the track because the chance of a crash and / or fire is much greater than anywhere a wall hanging portable fire extinguisher would be located. It takes enough force to pull the handle that accidental actuation while the driver is in the car isn't likely. Now, if someone is crawling around in the car and snags the handle, the bottle could go off.

I hate that we all started getting these videos recommended over the last few days and then today we hear about this! Here’s to a speedy rebuild and to be back better than ever!
very glad that you got out safe.cars can always be replaced but a life you cannot replace.
Glad that you caught it in time Tom being that close to the safety team, I just started following you all the time now. But I wasn’t expecting you to give me a show like that so fast💨 I’ve seen you do some hits here and there but I just seen a 5.77 hit at 260 mph and I said to myself that I needed to start following you because you’ve have been so stupid fast 💨 I was amazed how you and your team were so together and fast just about ever time you go out to make a hit, I’m just glad that you got out of the car safe, because if it’s anything like our dirt racing fire is a driver’s worst fear. You can always replace the car, but you can never replace (you) the driver. Look forward to seeing you knock down some more of them stupid fast time’s again soon. Thanks for sharing your super fast life with me/us as your fan’s Tom you’ve definitely gained one from the dirt racing world.🙏🏁🇺🇸👏
"Street car,...no. But it is good to dream." I hope Tom and the car will be back soon.
Glad you’re ok. Makes me think about trying to practice escape my car blindfolded to make sure I can get out in case I experience that. Prayers
I went with some people to a race once that got all excited when crashes happened. I shamed them a bit telling them, "Guys, this isn't like NASCAR. These people put their lives into this."
So sorry this happened. There is one bright side besides you being okay. Me and a lot of others will watch every second of the rebuild videos you post, and will be cheering twice as hard for your return.
God Bless.
Thanks to Finnegan's Garage for showcasing your fire and the resulting new suppression system you will use. I am glad I found your channel. what makes me even happier is seeing that all of the safety measures in place kept this from being a bigger tragedy. In the 80's and 90's while I was still immortal and invincible I started my career as an automotive machinist in a small local shop here in Portland OR. We of course built licker dicker grocery getter engines but our hearts were in racing. I love to see the safety in place now compared to then. We tragically saw more than one driver seriously injured and worse. I love drag racing but never want to see anyone hurt. I will be watching to see what you do with your "go" in the future. So far I love the content.
Damn man glad you're ok, everything else can be replaced.
I’d be good with never seeing anything this cool again.
Glad you’re okay, and that your sense of humor remains intact...
Well put. It’s only cool because he’s alive. And I’m alright not seeing this cool again
Thank you for showing this in its entirety, it's really a good example of how fire suits and protection can save your ass. People don't realize how long it takes to get out of a race car fully strapped in, especially when its on fire. Glad youre okay, and the car didn't get too fucked up. ❤️
Good to see you got out quick enough. Be safe!
Followed your and the cars exploits at Drag Weeks from the UK for the last few years, this wasn't an easy video to watch. Hope you get her fixed and back in the fives where she belongs.
This one hurt my heart but I am so thankful you were safe!
Just tripped over this channel yesterday!! Only the second video I've watched! I'm in!! Glad you're ok. For what it's worth,, the paramedic that was doing your evaluation was amazing!!! His concern for your lungs,, and explaining it like a man, to a man who just went through an inferno,,, mad props to him!!! I very much admired that. Best of luck,, I subscribed!!
For sure, coolest Doc ever
Some scary stuff! Glad you kept your cool! Can't wait for your new Nomad to get done, that is going to be an awesome ride. I love fast wagons, my favorite.
Heart breaker Tom. Glad you're OK. Y'all will be back on that horse in no time!
Not even gonna lie watching the last video of you taking on and off that fire suit after every run I was like he’s so used to it but it keeps him safe!
Dang man, just started following you right before Gator Nats, glad your ok. Look forward to seeing the car back on the track.
glad your ok Tom! and now you and the car are back better than ever! A similar seal caused the space shuttle challenge to explode on ascent way back when, crazy how small and cheap of a part can cause a disaster. Keep up the incredible content!
That car was a fucking legend. Prayers
I only thumbed this up for the algo, I hate this. Thank God you’re ok, I hope you are well and I bet your next build is even crazier.
Glad to hear that you are ok! I just came from Cleetus McFarland’s YT channel and this was recommended. I subscribed!
Happy to see you're safe tom, love all your cars, and drag race efforts. Best wishes
that was scary to watch when the seatbelt didn't release initially. glad you made it out okay !
Your definition of "Street Car" and mine are different, glad everyone is ok, hope the car is back up and running soon!
Ever seen him pulling a trailer with it?
I do see what you are saying, but it is legal. You can see brake lights as he is staging and on the driver door you can see some kind of clip or dovetail "thing" for his mirror to mount. They drive it....drove it 🥴
It will be back, and I for one...hope they dont even paint it.😛

Glad you left the word with the doc in the video to educate people! Not many people know, and too many try to play the hero joking about it, but the delayed reaction to inhaling smoke gasses can be really serious, especially later when the doc isn't around anymore.
Good to see you were lucky to escape quick enough. I bet that made you think about practicing bailing out. Maybe some others that watch this start to practice an emergency bail out.
I've been following you and that car for a while man i do Rocky mountain race week and Drag week myself too and I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear right now but you can always build another car over time but you can't build another Tom keep your head up man it's one the worst part of the game but things can only get better now
Glad your safety equipment performed correctly, Tom. We're already waiting for 3.0
Like leaving the safety pin in the fire bottle pull ? See 4:15 , above the drivers right shoulder, red t handle is the fire pull , the blue strip is the fire safety pin.
Tom is a well spoken likable guy so it is difficult to hammer on him too much however, pulling the fire pin should be part of the racing procedure. My car has the fire pull on the dash and the safety pin blocks the ignition toggle switch from moving making it impossible to run the car with the safety pin in.

@@bobroberts2371 I thought the pin remained in to prevent a 200mph face full of fire suppression on accident . Just like every fire extinguisher isn’t sitting there with the pin out ready to let roll with no safety . I honestly don’t know the deal on drag car fire suppression systems but I do know commercial kitchen hood suppression and they are armed but can’t be set off with out removing pin . They do have a pin release solenoid that when a certain temperature is reached a cable pulls the pin automatically and another cable and solenoid activate the suppression along with other safety’s like shutting gas and electrical off and killing fresh air make up .

@@DONTctVT Someone else said it may have had an electric thermal trigger. There is a wooshing sound towards the end that I assumed was fuel spray / maybe trans shifter CO2 bottle.
As a person that got messed up by an on the job accident I am soooo glad to see you walked away from that. Safety equipment and people working around you make all the difference in the world. When any one of those fail in their duties is when people get hurt. Came here from your video with Alex Taylors video with the Nomad build and saw this.. Again glad you walked away unscathed.
I think the scariest part of this level of racing is the invisible flames. You see other racers on CZcams not wearing fire suits. I think its a disaster waiting to happen.
