I've had 14" Rockwell since the early 70s.in the 80s I wanted more resaw capacity, I installed it but couldn't get it to track,oh well.way later in 2004 someone told me about poly replacement tires.i installed a new set and decided to reinstall the riser and wow it work great.new poly tires were not available when I tried the first time.technology is a wonderful thing..
Thanks man. I’m always so inspired watching your videos. I️ started wood working 5 years ago with a borrowed chop saw out side my 5th wheel trailer and now own a nice home and have a big shop space full of nice tools and watching your videos and a few others have taught me and are teaching me how to use them and make fun projects. I️ dont have one wood working friend and literally appreciate what you and a few others do to help hungry wood workers learn like me. Your awesome bud, thank you!
Nice job Jay. I used a ratchet strap from a rafter above to hold the top half of my 14 inch Powermatic when I fitted the riser block. Worked well as I was on my own.
Your going to be so happy with this extra capacity I bought the riser block when I bought the saw and I love it. And it's funny you mention the bolt issue I did the exact same thing when I assembled mine. Anyhow have fun and enjoy
Great job with your upgrade. That looked fairly simple and straightforward. I'm sure you are going to find a lot of reasons to do some resaw work.
Thanks for sharing
Roy
This has been on my list of things to do for a few months now. I have the same bandsaw and it has been a work horse so with 12" resaw capacity, I'm sure it'll rock.
It's amazing what changes come along the shop two years down the road :)
Perfect !
This is the exact saw and riser block setup that I have been eyeballing at Grizzly.
Thanks for the solid guide on how the adaptation goes together and thanks for showing us a test run afterwards.
This solidifies my decision to buy this combo.
Thanks Jay :)
Nice upgrade, Jay. I'm sure you're going to put it to good use.
I so need a bandsaw in my shop...
Nice upgrade! Looking forward to see future projects using this new capacity 🤓
I like that you make videos of things you do around the shop. I have the same size shop as you but my wife "requests" that her car get parked in their during the winter. I have watched all of your videos and plan to make some of your designs. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this post/video. If I hadn't already done it myself, I'd have been inspired to get the lead out and do it now.
I had looked at the Grizzly and actually would have preferred to get it, but about 4 years ago I bought the Ridgid on sale for about half what the Grizzly cost back then then. Now I was worried about the 3/4 HP motor, but so far I haven't had any problems, even resawing 10" red oak and 6" hard maple (for the face on my bench vise. (I did have to take it slowly and use an appropriate blade but the motor held up just fine). And of course I had to tune the saw up extensively, balance the wheels properly (they were close but not nearly good enough for my use), get cool blocks, and get urethane tires, etc. (I wish it had roller bearings instead of blocks, but I can live with that for now).
But the biggest thing was that I wanted 12" cut capacity. Now Ridgid lists a riser kit on their website (and a fence, too, FWIW), but I think that the next ice age will come before they manufacture any more of them.
So I started looking around and it turns out that the Grizzly riser block it fit it perfectly. I did repaint it to match my saw, but otherwise I've had no problems whatsoever. OK, one. I had just replaced 4 blades the week before I bought the riser kit. Sigh. They found a new home with a friend who does woodworking, but I wish I hadn't bought them.
I have been going through a great many of your web pages, and I like the style and the content. Thanks for posting all of them. (I am curious, though. I think you're around Starkville, and I wonder whether it gets as hot and humid as it does up in the delta. If I never hear another katydid again, that would be just fine with me :-) )ss
Again, thanks.
I have the same band saw. Ordered the riser block with the saw. You will find that it is a great add-on that will add to the usefulness. I have used mine to make boards out of 48 inch long oak rounds. Works just fine.
Thanks Jay! Just watched this one again. I got the kit for Christmas and I'm heading down to install it now. :)
I've got the same saw. Nice to know how easy the upgrade will be. Good video.
Did the same with my Delta bandsaw. So nice to have the extra capacity.
Like you I had to buy a set of BIG wrenches. I had sockets that fit the bolts, but there isn't enough clearance to get them whether they need to be.
Excellent solution, never really crossed my mind. Pretty slick!!!
Even after all these years, up until now I have never heard of a riser block. You had me wondering after listening to your podcast yesterday. thanks for the info man!
I should receive my riser kit this week for the Grizzly 555LX. I appreciate your tips on supporting the upper arm assembly because I will most likely do the mod by myself. And like you in should’ve done this sooner. Stay safe and well.
Thanks for this video, it was very helpful for me when install the riser for my Grizzly. I like the using of the bearing guides to hold up the top wheel after removing the bolt. I pre-installed the longer one so I was able to set it back on without needing the block of wood you used. Did the whole thing myself in very short order.
nice Jay..i got this riser kit for my G0555lx about two months ago. it works great
Very nice improvement!
Years ago we used to put blocks in-between the rear axle and leaf springs of our Morris Minors to lower them; made cornering much faster. The guy at Grizzly who developed this idea was an ex-Morris Minor driver - no doubt about that 😀
I heard you say on the podcast that you weren't really sure about this video. Just wanted to say that I love it! I have the same saw and have been thinking about the riser blocks. It was awesome to see how easy they are to install. I'll be using this as a reference video when I finally pull the trigger. Thanks for posting it!
Absolutely. Thanks for the feedback :)
Thanks for sharing this Jay. I'm a big fan of that bandsaw!! So many people are adding the riser kit now. The only issue any have disclosed is a lack of power to handle the larger pieces. Personally, I am more of a woodturner than a flat work guy. The guys who have had power issues were all turners as well. You're going to enjoy the upgrade buddy!
Yep, I purchased one when I purchased the saw!! You should be happy!
I totally want to get a riser block for my bandsaw soon thanks for the video Jay and its awesome to see Jeff Ferguson in the shop Hi Jeff
Sweet.
Last week I got a new-to-me G0555 (plain). It’s nice to see the riser block works out in case I need to go there some day.
Awesome, dude. I have the same saw and now you have me thinking about that. Looked pretty easy and it's not crazy expensive.
This discovery made me very happy. Thanks!
Hey Jay, i have a G0555LX and love it. A riser is on my want list. Much easier to install than i would have thought.
nice work Jay, looks like you will enjoy that!
That's pretty sweet. Been looking into getting a nice bandsaw and 525 plus 83 for the riser block is not a bad deal.
I have a Delta 14 inch with a factory issued riser block and 1 hp motor. An avenue you might consider next is a Laguna carbide tipped rip blade. The performance improvement on ambrosia maple was dramatic. I have no inkling to upgrade to a bigger saw now...unless its a full size wood miser. I got mine from woodcraft for about 150 ,using a 10 percent off birthday coupon.
I added the riser block to my bandsaw a while back and can't believe I waited so long to do it. Now it only my jointer had the same capacity!
I never knew you had the option to do this with the Grizzly saws. I've been in the market for a new band saw and this has tilted me towards this specific model. Very cool! Thanks!
nice upgrade Jay!
Nice upgrade. Pretty impressive
I have the same saw in the Polar Bear White. I added the riser block and haven't had to remove the blade guard to install the blade. Check to make sure the guard is square to the blade so you can get the blade behind it. I've done a lot of milling with mine since I got that riser. Enjoy it. I know I have.
I have the same saw too and like it very much. I ordered the riser kit when i ordered the saw. The orange blade guard could have been made a little better, but the saw is a good one.
Great video, i learned a lot about band saws, which i have been looking up lately, and thanks for showing your errors, i learn the most from seeing that.
Great addition!
Great video Jay....! God bless.....!
Very versatile machine, nice!
+Jay Bates when changing the saw blade, if you lower the top part of the orange blade guard, and the lower the hole guard down, does that make it possible to swap out blades without undoing two x Philips screws?
Thanks for showing this process. I wonder if the kit will work on a Porter Cable 14" as well.
Great Presentation!
Awesome! Such a helpful video. Thanks!!
Jay
I know this is one of your old video's, but I just changed my blade(105") in my band saw, mostly used for cutting large 12" , can squeeze 14" Diameter logs for resawing into usable Lumber.
I first thought that a 3/4 " blade would be the way to go for a straighter cut, thought the wider blade would give me a more stable cut and not drift so much. OOPS wrong!! Bigger is not always
Better.
I was sent a couple of blades from Ebay that were wrong and rather than go through all the problems of returning them I thought I would give them a try. I don't know if it was the brand, the tooth size or type
but all the hundreds of dollars I have spent on blades before was a waste.
I don't mean to give this company a plug HERE but the wrong blades that were sent were 105", 1/2", TPI 3, Style HOOK, Set RAKER. I sliced alot of Oak and finally had to change the blade after I resharpened it 4 times. They go through through the oak, Camphor, Walnut, Pear, wood all the same (very Nice) No drift just dead on what I was looking for. All Pro PGT Professional Series Band Saw Blade, and I just switched to my second blade and was going to order more and thought of you.
I would almost offer a money back guarantee on a purchase of these blades. They are that good. AWESOME, I mean.
Nice improvement. If you don't have one, consider getting the Microjig Smart Hook Pushblock. Everything about it is superb for use at the bandsaw when resawing. At least I think so. Your demo at the end made me think of it.
I've got a set and actually use them occasionally. But no way I can recommend anyone to buy them. Two pieces of scrap wood and a screw will do the exact same thing for a lot less money.
just watched this in prep for getting my tax return in a few months. have a ton (literally) of old growth doug fir from when i took my deck apart - all 2+x 12+ inches, now cut into manageable lengths from 22'.... going to be door-orama this summer.
Nice upgrade.
Hi Jay ! Where can I find 100 1/2 inch band saw blades? Thanks for your videos very helpful
nice job jay
I love your videos! :)
I just put one on my 555 yesterday. I had way more problems than you did. My tensioner was so far off it wouldn't even release noticeable tension. Advice to anyone do not follow manual on adjusting. I found there video online and it set me straight. Second ever time i raise my guides over half way they get stuck or the flimsy guard sticks on side of case. I adjusted guides on and off for 3 hrs. ready to send whole saw back and get something else.
Very cool. I have to wonder why it didn't just come standard this way. I need a new larger bandsaw so now I'll remember when I am looking at them to check and be sure they can be upgraded. Although I still might just make one.
Great upgrade Jay.
Happy Father's Day (my daughter assures me dogs are children too).
I've heard that too so ditto Jay, nice video. Take care.
Good one Jay. I need to get this kit for my Ridgid bs14002. What HP motor are you running and do you feel it's enough for the full capacity 12" resawing you want to do?
Jay, I need advice on a bandsaw blade. I purchased the 17" Grizzly G0513ANV (comparable to your 555anv with riser) and am trying to find a good contour blade. Highland Woodworking 3/16 4tpi skip? Maybe a 1/4 6tpi hook? Im completely open to any suggestion. Thanks, and I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos.
I have practically the same saw G0555P, the polar bear version in white. Looking forward to making the same improvement, but what to do with all my short blades?
Awesome upgrade! I considered doing this to my 14" Ridgid until I picked up my 20" jet.
Very nice Jay , would it work with a 15” bandsaw ? , that’s what I have and I’d like to know if it’s compatible with my jet 15” bandsaw.
Thanks and you do a great job with your videos 👍
You need to do a video on how to get people to give you tools and upgrade kits, etc.
Be generous and giving in your own life. What goes around comes around.
got mine two years ago switched the blade guide holders to ceramic guides had better and cooler runing blade the blade guides that came with the saw never could get them set every time i would make ajustments when i would retighten them it would change did not what else to do now trying to get the extensetion kit ,any ideas??????
I just installed my riser block on mine last night. I hate the adjustable blade guard, it often seems to be in the way. Did you ever change yours or is it something you learned to live with? Mine doesn't seem to fit right when opening up all the way to 12".
Congratulations
my wife got me a riser block for my old green delta 14" bandsaw ... 2 yrs ago (ashamed to admit ) haven't put it on yet. maybe your video will light a fire under my butt.
Did it ?
@@LemonySnicket-EUC sadly no
Now I need to pull the covers off mine and see if I can make a riser. This is going to be a challenge!
Whats the power of that motor? Nice video!
Hi Jay.
Very Interesting this kind of BandSaw allows that you increase the area of service (cut). We have only Starrett and Makita in Brazil and it doesn't allow you increase this area(cut). It's a petty, but....
I liked it.'
Tks for information
ZACCARO
Hi. I like your video's. Just a tip from a pro Joiner/Carpenter. Never stand at the side of bandsaw. If the blade breaks they can shoot out the side very easily.
You can make your old band saw blades longer by getting the exact same blade in bulk length then brazing the two together. I did this quite a bit when I was in the US Navy.
Most auto parts stores will lend you tools for a few days. It comes in handy for large sockets and wrenches that you need for specific projects.
True. But I'd rather just get another set and have them on hand for next time.
I have the same band saw and I think mine came with a taller fence and fence mounting rails with the riser block kit.. The original blade that came wth the saw didn't last very long when I was cutting Madrone but I am not sure if the blade was low quality or the Madrone was just so fricken hard. I got the riser block upgrade when I bought the machine new and I wore the stock blade out before installing the riser block, so I really didn't waste any blades.
I was surprised to see that the power switch wiring was long enough to still fit. Great
What headset do you use?
How high is the band saw with the riser from floor to top of the band saw?
Hey Jay what size is the blade after installing the riser?
Agora ficou muito bom.
What size wrench did you end up needing?
Are these universal or brand-specific?
Jay think you could possibly stack two riser blocks? I have one on my saw and I am about an inch shy of the capacity I was looking for.
You would have to custom make the left side blade guide and the rack and pinion bar.
Perfect.
The real reason for this increase was to get body parts through it easier. The wood working thing is a sham everyone!
Is in your bandsaw 1HP motor? Thanks
Now throw a woodslicer from highland woodworking on there and resaw like a champ.
Interesting that they use a long bolt, instead of two short ones to connect the riser block. If you want a resaw blade recommendation, take a look at the fast cut blades from tuffsaws.co.uk/
What speed setting do you use for resawing
Do you run your band saw on 110 or 220?
Do they have a four-inch block or 3 inch block
This is something I need to upgrade too... I guess I should stop buying 93 1/2 blades at this point !!
this is really random but what brand is that knife that you used to open the box? the blue and black one
Sheffield
Jay I was catching up on some vids and noticed you got rid of the orange color on your Rigid saw, any reason for that? and also how do you like your saw I been looking at them and cant decide what one to buy. also should o get a table saw first or Dual bevel compound miter saw?
Black tools look better. A good table saw is much better than a good miter saw.
Jay Bates having a hard time resetting the tensioner. i cant get it tight enough. anyone else run into this issue? might have to call tech support. bleh
Can that be done on any 14inch bansaw. ?
Does the 1hp motor have an issue with resawing hardwoods like walnut etc..
Nope.
Awesome upgrade to your bandsaw Jay, can you tell us what brand your band saw is? And also if Grizzly sells riser blocks for every type of bandsaw or only for some models? Tnx for sharing it man!!!
I mentioned what bandsaw it is in the first sentence of the video.
+Jay Bates sorry bro I was rising the volume and skiped it, tnx man!!
:)
Good content. I have that saw (LX I think, not the black ANV). It's a nice little saw and I have no complaints, but have been wondering whether to go riser block or buy a bigger saw, mostly concerned that I would still have only a 1 hp motor. Will you report back after you've resawed some 12 inch hardwood? Could save me a couple thousand bucks, which doesn't grow on trees around here :)
I'll be sure to let everyone know.
Over the last 2 years, how often do you use the full capacity?
Since adding the block I'd say I resaw stuff that requires the riser block more so than stuff that didn't require it. Resawing has been a handy option for the shop.
Sadly this won't work on my cheap 1 piece craftsman table top saw :(
How much is the blade stretcher for this saw?
I have the same saw and I upgraded mine a few years ago and it was about $80 and well worth it!
