Perimeter Trail Part 2 - Day 49

- We continue the perimeter trail but on the north side this time. The eventual goal is to have a continuous trail along the entire perimeter of the property. This will help with security by keeping an eye on everything, but it will also be for recreation. We hope to have many miles of trails throughout the entire property for hiking, horseback riding, and driving with ATVs.
The progress created in this video was accomplished in three days. On Day 49, we started at the end of the northbound trail near the adjacent field and cut west. On Day 50, we started at the same spot and cut east. I took Day 51 off to fix a hydraulic leak on the tractor. On Day 52, I started at the driveway and cut west to tie into the end point from Day 50. The walkthrough was recorded on Day 56.

Check out purple paint law for your property post
That is certainly a great tree. I would call it a "witness tree", as it has seen history long before our time. They have them around the civil war battlefields in my area.
Witness tree.. I love it.
Love the witness tree concept. And also love your plans for a tree house. I suggest multi level. 2-3. Should be fun to see it built. Thx for sharing.
For the mosquitoes (and other annoying flyers) in the woods carry wide brim hat and they won't fly in your face and ears.
Thank me later.
Thank you for the update, I do learn a lot! ❤
It looks like a ton of hard work, but you also seem like you've never been happier. Congratulations on your new journey, and I look forward to seeing how it progresses.
Someday, we'll get to see you get started on that never-ending deck in the trees, so cool!
I'll enjoy watching this come together over the coming months and years
Jay, I think a mulcher attachment would do wonders for you during the trail building phase. Not only are they more than capable of taking out larger trees, they can clear the stumps, and mulch the trail at the same time to help fill in the wetness of the path. Might be something to look in to. The pirahna blade seems to be a great tool for clearing as well!
You did a great job of describing Mississippi, my brother lives near Poplarville. What you described is a big part of why I live in Tennessee.
Yes, the GoPro works wonderfully. Also, it is great to hear you full of energy and excitement. Yes, you have bought property with a ton of potential. It will take years, but that time will fly as you transform this into a joy. Anyone who comes will feel like they are secluded but in a well cared area. Keep up the great work. I almost want to visit with my tractor to help!
I agree with Michael that there are years ahead of you building your dream. But...there are also going to be days when nothing goes right in the shop and you just need to get away, so you jump on the tractor and spend a couple hours sculpting your dream. Will very likely cut down on psych meds...😂
I also you use the wood chips to help build up puddles and deep mud. At least it stabilizes soil for free
Avon skin so soft works well for me battling mosquitos.
Thanks for taking us along no on your journey.
Wow, you have a LOT of work ahead of you :D With as wet as it is, It may make sense to rent a mid to large excavator for a week and knock down the big areas (less likely to get stuck). The clearing process would go way faster and make dealing with the stumps easier/quicker if you pull the trees up whole. The more roots you get during removal, the longer it takes to grow back. Granted it's a cost, but it may be worth the time you save, allowing you to move on to the next steps in your plans for the property sooner. added bonus, you get a video of you learning to run a new machine for the channel :)
I've been enjoying the new format of this series. Thanks for sharing!
Jay. Love all your update videos. Keep them up and good luck with your future happiness.
Going to be amazing, very happy for you and your family. Those will be some epic tree houses !!
Really enjoying sharing your "adventure" with you! But one day you will have all this great footage to reminisce with. It will go by so quickly you won't believe it. But what a great piece of property! I know you are having fun just visualizing how to develop it to your liking. Looks like you're moving rapidly along tho. ❤❤
👏 Suggestion - 1) reciprocating saw with carbide pruning blade (Diablo 12”) for broken sapling stumps, 2) start building out a backpack EDC kit for your walks e.g. marker paint to mark stumps to be removed (track near Ag Field) 👍
I have enjoyed watching your videos. Lot of hard work!
Tree house! Heck yeah!
Really enjoying watching you enjoy your new property. Excited to be a passenger on the rest of your journey.
There's one thing for sure, the energized bunny has nothing on you. It is always a good video.
Its so exciting watching this. It looks like so much fun. I know it's a lot of work... but to rewarding. And that tree is AMAZING! I love it.
Get some Tea Tree oil!!!!!! I worked in the yard yesterday clearing a small area in my yard to make a play area for my grandson. I was getting ate up with bugs. Got the tea tree oil out and no more bugs!!!
I also would like to put in my request to be adopted into the family. LOL. It's going to be a great place for a vacation.
Tea tree oil. I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
I've watched you for many years as a woodworker but Im not a big talker on here. Bought a few sets of your plans (which came out great). I really am looking forward to this phase of your life. I'm in "hog heaven" - a woodworker and a homesteader my favorite two things. Best of luck on this journey for you and your family.
the go-pro was absolutely perfect for this. keep using it 😉
Thanks!
I think the go-pro is great 👍👍
I’m liking the head mounted cam. Victory Outdoor Services, Ryan Tomich, does that and it works well. Great work!
Having this video series that is already edited will be awesome for memories 20-30 years from now. I don’t know how many unedited videos I have on hard drives so remembering the specifics (now) sometimes decade laters makes it hard to recall specifics
Great tree for sure. Def oak. Which type? Idk. Couldn’t see the leaves enough nor bark.
I think that I can see a backhoe in your near future for doing the drainage ditches and culverts. Plus it can come in handy for foundations and water lines and such when you build the shop and house.
Keep up the walk around videos, Jay. I'll be here.
Good on you bro, that is real work. I will pass on what I learned when doing much the same thing as you for the drives. You are going to need 3 times the rock you think. I started doing it myself with 'driveway' rock, and found it just disappeared into the clay. My rock guy 'lernt' me. 5" size as a base. then 3" size like they put on railroad beds, then the 'driveway' rock mix. In ten years it has never failed but the small part I did with just the 'driveway' rock is no bueno. Thought I'd pass that along if you want the forever fix.
Wonderful, thank you
Your roads and trails could really benefit from the addition of hard pack soil, before you start laying gravel down, ask your landscaper about it. You can often get it fairly inexpensively because, nobody wants it. On the tree you were talking about building a tree house on, the branches that protrude at 90 degrees(ish) are actually referred to as suckers, and they actually weaken the main trunk.
You may want to add a read blade that can be angled and tilted to make the ditch work easier. I don't think that your box blade is going to make you happy for that. The box blade will get a lot of cleanup done, however. Your hard work is definitely paying off!
Rear blade is on the list.
Thanks for the tour... lots of work put in and lots to go! I may have missed it in a prior video but are you planning on (or already have) a pond/lake on the property? If not, you could use a lot of your drainage to keep it filled and sustainable. Plus provide water for the critters and make a nice fishing spot!
Small pond with fish already exists.
Hey Jay - Great work. Only because I've had the whip marks to stand on here, I'll say this: I use goggles (dewalt makes a great breathable set) when I'm tearing into brush with with Kubota these days. I've been smacked and whipped so many times from limbs I have paint missing from the ROPS. Honestly I should prolly use a chainsaw helmet with a mesh face. Anyway, thought you might find my pain interesting if not also informative.
I recently purchased a helmet with earmuffs and a mesh face shield for chainsaw work. I like it so much that I wear it while on the tractor now.
Of course it is two wet now. But i use to work for a park system a to make trails dryer we would use a one bottom plow and work dirt to the center crowning the trail. And the plow would make a shallow ditch on each side. Then disk the trail smooth. And plant grass to keep its shape.
Crowning the trails like that is what I was going to try. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.
loving these videos. As a fellow large property owner my I give some advice? Get yourself a stihl 462 or 500i. That chainsaw is amazing and speeds up your workflow, especially bucking logs.
My MS250 has treated me well. I'll keep rocking it for as long as I can get by with it. Just to minimize expenses until after this year.
Go pro is working pretty good. Good video.
You can use purple paint on your property line to mark it a private property to keep out.
Only in 14 States if I recall correctly. Mississippi does not recognize purple paint laws, unfortunately.
I'll be moving to Mississippi at the end of August.
What part?
@@JayBates Jackson area.
Zip lines between the treehouses!
I like the way you think :)
@@JayBates Two separate lines at different heights each going opposite directions. The height and angle of lines will determine height of platforms. Family fun for decades! I’ve been following you since your apartment days and I’ve loved watching your progress over the years. I’m thrilled for you and your family. Don’t lose your momentum on your property work.
Have you thought about getting bug head nets? It would eliminate the bugs in your face.
I think the net would be more frustrating than the bugs. They usually aren't too bad. It just rained so they were out in full force in this video.
I have trails in my woods, but my place is in Wi. so it' all sand and no water problems. Not as wide as yours.
I believe they call those specimen trees. That beautiful tree reminds me of the swiss family robinson's tree at Disneyland (I grew up in socal)
How does the lower section look? Hopefully no rot or lesions?
No rot or lesions that I found on initial inspection.
Get a steering wheel knob for tractor, you will thank me.
I just got back from running errands today. I got a steering wheel knob while I was out :)
I was thinking the exact same thing.
What a kind term for that. Growing up, we always called it a suicide knob. Felt like a racecar driver turning so quickly
Hahaha. Never heard it called that.
Meant to add in you last video, one of the best tractor attachments to move the logs is a pair of forks. Not the kind that connects to the front bucket, but replaces the bucket. For the people who complain about you destroying the ecosystem, I guess it was okay to destroy the ecosystem when their house or apartment building was built.
I have pallet forks. I like the grapple better for log moving.
Should look into a tree puller
One mans trashing is another mans forest management.
hahaha. So much trash.
Are you using Regrid? It is fairly accurate to show property lines.
I've used AllTrails, Google Maps, What3Words, and Land id with similar results. The GPS on my phone is not super accurate. I have to do multiple readings and take an average.
Jay, you want to go left you want to go right with your trail. I'm sorry but I've always seen you as my younger brother from another mother. As the guy that's over older than you and his kids are getting married now. Here's what you do. Put your daughter on the lawn tractor she is driving now and let her pick the direction of the trail. Then go with it.
You need to purchase a headnet to keep the bugs out of your face.
Jay... For goodness sake. The discomfort is self inflicted. Wear a light weight long sleeve top and get a mozzie net hat. 🦟😬
I'm not wearing a bug net hat. Too little air flow and too annoying. They were only out in full force because it just rained. No big deal.
@@JayBates I bet you’ll never mention the bugs again, after all these well-meaning and ‘helpful’ comments.
