Turns out this car went for a bargain price. At the Vegas auction yesterday (7/2/22) a restomod Vette went for $500K and a replica "Back to the Future" DeLorean - not one used in the movie - went for over $150K. This car was used on camera in the series, driven by James Garner, and later owned by him after the series ended, and went for $105K! Amazing.
Probably in the series run , there was a dozen or so "Rockford cars " Between model years changes, sound and stunt cars and back up cars. Even if there was a hundred i would still love to get my hands on one James Garner was the coolest.

And if you were a fan of the show, you know the car changed with the year. Most were Formula firebirds that were de-trimmed to look like regular Firebirds and painted a special color not offerd by GM, so it would look gold on the TV. screen
Even though the show went to 1980, the reason is the last car was a 1978 was JG refused to have the latest models because he was not a fan of the new front end fascia of either the 1979 or 1980 models of the car.
That show, this car and James Garner/Jimmy hold so many good times and memories, its amazing to think a TV show made before I was born that I watched on A&E with my mates at uni in syndication holds so much sway all these years later. Miss ya Rockfish.

He was also a progressive who thought marijuana should be legalized. He fought the studio on behalf of the crew, and for residuals when they tried to cheat him. Jim was a great guy. Somebody else recognized that and bought this car. 👌🏼
I’m 52 yrs old now but when I grew up in the 1980s in England, I remembered fondly watching the Rockford files with my mum and dad in the evening. And I use to have an identical Pontiac Firebird toy car, manufactured by Matchbox in GT. Britain. I just don’t understand why Pontiac doesn’t remake this in the modern era, keeping it as close to the original design as possible, but with modern materials and technology.
Great car and one off the best tv shows ever, made starting in 1976 they converted 400 firebird formula into esprit firebird because James garner said in his autobiography that Rockford was more off a blue collar type off American that’s why he chose that model off the firebird ....also he did not like the front end on the 1979 firebirds sow he had the transportation people locate as many new 1978 formulas as they could for the rest off the seasons off the show👍

But I can do one better than that, 2 years ago I got to have my picture taken sitting in the actual Sanford and Son pickup truck, it's in the exact condition it was when the show was filmed, and there's only one of them.

Coincidentally I happened to go see it the day after Nathaniel Taylor died, he's the guy who played Rollo, the dash and visors are signed by him and the other surviving cast members, two weeks after I was there they were scheduled to have a reunion of the surviving cast members and the owner told me they would use it as an opportunity to recognize Mr Taylor and have a tribute for him and invited me to come to it, he said he'd introduce me to all of them but unfortunately that was the weekend I was scheduled to move back to my home state of Pennsylvania and couldn't make it. They sell cool T-shirts that have the logo from the driver's door on the front of them and you can get them off the website, picked up a few of them when I was there and sent one to my old Army buddy in St Louis, he loved that show and was all the time imitating and quoting old Fred. Growing up in the 70's watching that show it was the thrill of my lifetime getting my picture taken sitting in that truck.

They started explaining something that I think needs clarification: if I recall correctly, James Garner said that the Esprit wouldn't have performed as the Formula for all the stunt driving visuals, and hence the backward cloning.
GM,s gold color looked to copper/red-ish on the the TV screen, so the production team made a special color that looked more gold on the screen. They had to re-paint the cars anyhow, as they were Formula Firebirds and had to be de-badged and made to look like a cheaper model FB

Besides a phenomenal actor James Garner was such a good driver but there were some scenes in Rockford Files that the shows producers had stunt drivers do instead. Garner did some of the driving but not all. Indy guys also said if his acting career didn't "pan out" he could easily have been a race car driver, he was that good. Garner was the real deal and was truly one of the all-time greats..

So I'd think the value has gone up on this car , except the paint job sucks because some jerked off owner did not leave it original.

@@wildbillhackett If there were 2 actors that i think would be the most similar, it would be (debatable I am sure ) Steve McQueen and James Garner, Both very professional and great actors, I think the only problems they ever caused on a set is the insistence to do as many automotive stunts as they could, I don't think either one had a huge ego, but judging from interviews I would think if one was bigger, McQueen would beat him by the slightest of margins. If you look at some of the clips of the last few seasons of "the Rockford Files" you would see JG limping around from bad knees working through the pain knowing if he didn't, that rest of the cast and crew would be out of a job , He sure did not need the money or like the "Hollywood lifestyle"
I tried to do a Rockford 180 in my 1975 Nova with air shocks and big wide tires on the back. Got about 90 degrees into the turn and all of a sudden I heard a boom and the car came to a complete stop. Halfway through the Rockford I blew out my air shocks and the body came down hard on the tires! Geez was that bad...
The Burt Reynolds cartel wouldn't have allowed it...Mr.Garner was quite aware of the thrashability of the basic bird.Jim was first and foremost the real deal.And he could really,really drive!
A Trans Am would have been too flashy and expensive for the character. Pontiac offered, Garner declined. GM built several vehicles especially for Garner, including all but the first of Rocky's pick up trucks. Garner could have had anything he wanted for the show. GMC even built a special truck for Garner to pace races.
A Formula had hood scoops and in later years graphics. The Firebirds used on the show never did. They used a Formula 400 with a standard flat hood and no graphics to look like a more mundane Esprit or even base Firebird so they could have enough power to do some of the driving stunts. They have all the reruns on Netflix and you can clearly see this, although oddly enough in some of the earlier episodes you can also see a later model car in some of the far off driving shots. There is also a scene or two that was shared on episodes of Columbo. I am guessing there was some editing years later and things got mixed up. I don't know how else you would get a '76 Firebird in a TV show shot in '74.

I read a while back that Garner didn't like McQueen nor his acting, at least not when they first met on the set of The Great Escape.

The only thing is the car was an automatic and didnt have electric windows.
The car he used in beginning was firebird Esprit to do the J maneuver !
The cars were all formulas made to look like esprit models.
Most had manual roll up windows, the one being sold had electric.

I blew the transmission out of my parents car doing Jimmy Rockfords in an empty parking lot.

The color looks a little to dark I think . I’m sure I’m wrong . By the way they didn’t use a trans am type due to it association with Burt Reynolds . Also they wanted a plain type unit after all he was always broke on the show . Lol
