  • Born in Baghdad in the second century of Islam, Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal was a pivotal figure in the development of Islamic thought. Dr. Shabir Ally discusses his life, his contributions to Islamic thought, and his founding of the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence, which is known for its strict adherence to the hadith over the use of reason or analogy. Imam Ahmad emphasized the hadith as a primary source of religious authority in contrast with other schools that allowed more room for reason and analogy. Dr. Shabir explains that Imam Ahmad’s approach was to prioritize weak hadiths over human reasoning to preserve the purity of Islamic teachings. Imam Ahmad had a massive compilation of hadiths, which numbers between 28,000 to 30,000. His school became foundational in regions like Saudi Arabia.

Thank you for this series. What is clear is that as time went on traditions were elevated and the intellect/AQL/qiyas was denigrated.

    Thank you Dr Shabir.
One has to keep in mind the background of Imam Ahmad to appreciate why he chose to index his collection by the first narrator rather than topically. The age of Ahmad bin Hanbal saw the appearance of several fabricators, and if fell upon the shoulders of scholars such as Ahmad bin Hanbal and Yahya bin Maeen to sift through these narrations and investigate rigorously the narrators. Yahya bin Maeen the life long companion of Imam Ahmad is credited with perfecting the hadith related science of narrator biographies علم الجرح و التعديل. This foeld focussrs solely on who the narrator were, who taught them, who learned from them, what was the status of their memory, how truthful and consistent were they etc.
I did expect a more elaborate presentation of the tribulation of خلق القران. You mentioned that the "rationalists" better known historically as "Mutazilites" came up with this philosophical idea that the Quran must be created. Furthermore they with the help of the Caliph Al-Mamoun and later Al-Mutasim subjected many scholars to grueling torture to surcome to this unhinged new creed. Not a very rational approach. Ahmad bin Hanbal spent many years in prison as a result with many others who eventually died.
By the Grace and mercy of Allah, this philosophical nonsense ended after thirty some years when a new Caliph came, and Ahmad bin Hanbal was released.
Incidentally, a debate was held in which the irrationality of the idea was presented quite eloquently in the presence of the Caliph and the scholars. The simple argument presented was
"God creates with the word "be" if the word "be" is created, then God needs a created to create other creations. But God needs no one and nothing as all power is from Him alone." The the words of God are just that, the words of God.
Secondly, this philosophical idea was unknown and untaught to the companions or by them, and they were the best generation as attested by the Quran. Therefore, in addition to being an erroneous creed it is an unnecessary creed.
The Caliph Al-Mutawakil put an end to this absurd nonsense in 861AD after this debate.

I challenge any muslim in to convince me that allah is not a man-made god. Muslims say allah is not like his creation, but allah is like us in many ways. He is particulaly very much like a human regarding his emotional responses. He gets angry, disappointed, frustrated, impatient, ,,,,and jealous...very jealous. If you so much as look at another god, he throws a tantrum and threatens to torture you. In quran 37 verse125, allah complaines that :" “Do you call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators?” I men seriously bro....when i read a verse like this, all i hear is the whining of an on secure person constantly needing validation. We already know that humans are capable of creating gods and have indeed done so multiple times in history. So when believers in a god try to convince me that he is real, I look for signs that this god was or wasn´t created by humans since we know that humans CAN create gods. And from what i have pointed out about allah, i think we can safely say that allah is just another god created by the human imagination....no matter how logical the concept of one god may sound.

@@markorbit4752 so you believe only if you witness something? How many thing are happening without you witnessing and your concern? And how many things were before you were born and will be after you'll die, so you think everything that you can see or witness is REAL and others not real or made up and imagined, you are out of logic and common sense, the world was and will be without you had to see or witness it, and this all has a Creator, and you will see your Creator one day sooner or later

With Imam Hanbal the journey to the Dark Side is complete. He understood that if you could use the light of rationality you might see that the Quran was written by a very limited human author.

Although Quran was written by humans, it is the word of Allah and memorized by so many people. Can't compare the Quran with Hadith. Just read the Hadith and you will find lots of similar Hadith narrated by different chains but not literally the same.
