  • Brake lights not working, but the third brake light still works? Here is a 30 second fix without removing the dash to replace the Hazard switch which also contains the turn signal flasher and the main brake lights are also ran through this switch. This video shows what is inside this switch and what fails. This applies to most 90's to the mid 2010's GM (Chevy, GMC, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) vehicles, but other brands use similar designs. shown here on a 2001 Chevy Impala

I can vouch for this! My signals weren’t working and I spent a lot of money with a mechanic replacing the signal switch, fuses, and diagnostics. As it turns out, it was just the hazard switch. I wish I would’ve seen this video two weeks ago!

Man. I hope you've saved me a ton of time trying to trouble shooting my problem. The other day I used my hazards. As you stated , They don't get used much. I forgot to turn them off and they had been on for awhile. Me driving and turning and such. That evening out of the blue.. my left turn signal quit. The next day no turn signals at all. In addition to that I herd a buzzing like noise coming from my flasher relay . A man honked at me to say .I have no brake or tail lights at all. And no blinkers. He did say the third brake light on the top of my van was working. Watching your video I noticed you said the third brake light would work. Bingo. Ty for this so much. I've subscribed as well

Thank you Sir, I had someone hit my car last night and I had my hazard lights on, but when I turned them off, I didn't take the switch far enough to the off position and that caused the 2 of 3 brake lights and turn signals to not work. I had thought the incident caused the failure and perhaps a connection was jarred loose.

What if it’s only the left brake/blinker and not a bad bulb. Can this still be the fix?

Possibly, but usually affects both sides.

I have a 2005 impala base model, the turn signals and the hazard button do not flash. So hopefully I don't have to pull dash.

You shouldn't with this technique. The problem is with this switch though.

@@thejunkman I went out and took 2 small screw drivers and carefully raised up on the flasher button and turned on car and the blinkers and flasher started working! Not sure if it will last.

This means the contacts are probably worn and it will fail once more. Check the end of this video to understand what I am talking about.
