Latvia is a small Baltic republic, a country with a strong national identity, situated within the centre of the Baltic States. Throughout the course of history its desire for freedom has always taken it forward. Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Saint Petri Church is one of the oldest in the centre of the city and, at the same time, a main landmark. It is one of the most important sacred buildings of the Middle Ages and is closely linked with the development of the city. Close to Riga is Jurmala, today a popular health resort on the Latvian Riviera, with splendid bay-windowed villas, battlements and towers, formerly Baroque and later with a nod at Gothic. Thirty kilometres of beaches with bright erinaceous quartz and a mild climate created a holiday paradise in the nineteenth century. Amid the fertile Zemgale Plain is the magnificent, huge Baroque Jelgava Castle, the largest in Latvia. In 1737 the residence of the then secular ruler of the Duchy Of Kurland was built on the ramparts of an ancient castle of the Livonian Order. Beneath the southeast corner of the castle is the Crypt Of The Dukes, a tomb vault with thirty superbly decorated sarcophagi of tin and wood. The picturesque primordial river valley of Gauja has for centuries attracted travellers from each corner of the world. This Livonian Switzerland not only has the charm of primary nature, but also all the ambience of the Middle Ages. Today’s Latvia is now striking a healthy balance between a market economy, ancient traditions and the burdensome legacy of a turbulent past. Its journey into the European Union has been a success, thanks to courage, strength and faith!

30-50 yo Probably all three at a decent level;
< 20-30 yo -- 90% English, and 30/70 either Russian or local (for different reason than elderly though).

Disappointed, that in the beautiful city of Liepaja with its lovely architecture and beaches, they chose to highlight Karosta prison and the crumbling fortress.
The only building they showed was Trisvienibas baznica, they missed Sv.Annas baznica, Petertirgus and the beautiful wooden houses in amongst others Peldu iela....
So, If you have to choose one, is it most beautiful Liepaja rather than Ventpils? I only will go to one of them because I want to focus myself in Jurmala/ Kuldiga and Slitere national park in this part of the country (Liv villages/ kolka lighthouse/ hike). Unfortunately I'll miss the lake part of Daugavplis but that' s an excuse to come back :)
@@nuriagimenezgracia9592 I haven't been to Ventspils, but visited Liepaja for a few days, but would recommend Liepaja over Ventspils as it's the less industrial city of the two. I was there during Jani (Summer solstice) so most places were closed, but my friends and I still had a great time! Liepaja is picturesque with all kinds of wooden buildings and several historic churches that look plain on the outside but have beautiful Baroque interiors. By the port's main bridge my friends and I stayed in hip hotels (50 Euros/night) and enjoyed really good local beers in several pubs with good food. There are nice restaurants throughout so it's a city for foodies and live music lovers. Liepaja's beach life is second to Jurmala's and has large, lush green parks to enjoy on the walk to the powdery soft sandy beaches.

You make the ī and ā longer and hold it for a second. Just look up how to pronounce it before you say it.
Also not understandable why english speaking people always think that words are pronounced as per english alphabet . According to pronounciation in this film name of the river Gauja should be spelled like Y in York ( like Gauya ) .

For instance in 1935. russians were only 8,2 % , comparing with mid 1980's when it reached almost 50 % . Where do you think they came from ? ( Statistics freely available in many sources ) . In 1990. short before the collapse of USSR in Latvia were located 223 soviet military structures with approximate 80 000 personel with officers families . During 50 years period altogether here soviets based 3009 bases in 700 locations all over Latvia .

Where are the best in Eur ope Dairy Industry and agriculture? Where are rowing clubs, sailing, cycling teams, sailplanes clubs, where are these remarkable achievements??? Where is Mr. Tal world chess champion MANY times? I do know what I am talking about my family goes back couple hundred years we had and rented agricultural enterprises, we had flour mills, wood processing factories. The first Russian Revolution in 1905 started in Latvia. Latvians were first in the revolutionary movement in the Russian Empire. Lenin trusted only Latvian Guards, so-called "Latishskie Strelki " so did Trotsky when he lead the Red Latvian Troops brutally suppressed the Revolt of Czechoslovak troops, he trusted Red Latvians with the brutal fight against the Czechs. What does Latvia have now -empty fields, homesteads where only aged peasants who cannot move to the EU to work on fish processing plants or take care and clean chamber pots of western Europeans. Next year EU subsidies are over, do you think Americans or Germans care about you Latvians not so , particularly the Germans who think of you in not flattering terms.
Keep your soviet time propaganda at yourself. And better learn facts properly , many things you named has nothing to do about USSR time .
