  • The Republic is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato around 380 BC concerning the definition of justice and the order and character of the just city-state and the just man. It is Plato's best-known work and has proven to be one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city (Kallipolis) ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

It’s so wonderful to reach an age where patience and curiosity have time in a persons life to stretch myself . I’ve always wanted to read classics, to challenge myself, to learn more from history. Thank you!

Justice is useful as it can come in any profession. Eg an unjust doctor won't do much good but a just doctor would.

“Justice is to speak your truth and to pay your debts”
“It is just for a man to do good to his friends as he does bad to his enemy”
“The repayment of a debt, it just”
“Justice is giving to a man what is proper to him” I.e payment, or other forms of Justice
“In time of peace, Justice is of no use”
“Justice is useful when money is useless”
“Justice is not good for much”
“If a just man is good at keeping money, then he is good at stealing money, thus he is a thief”
    - not sure what he was getting at here
“Justice is an art of the theft” follow by “that’s not what I mean”
    - made me giggle, knowing they were okay will being wrong and open to learning. As prior they were informant. A man truly can know nothing, thus making them wise.
