  • There have been several inquiries on CZcams and Facebook about alternative polishing methods. Without stones and etching the surface with acid or chloride. From the point of view of traditional methods, it is completely wrong. Stones cannot be replaced by anything. But if they are not, it has to go differently, even though the result will be significantly worse. The use of acids to enhance metallurgy is debatable. It's bad for me. However, more and more polishers even in Japan are using this method. It is even listed as an alternative method in a book on polishing Japanese swords. I consider it harmful. The acid gets into the pores in the steel, and even after neutralization, a salt of the corresponding acid is formed from it by a chemical reaction, which contributes to faster aging of the blade. With current swords, so be it. To the layman, acid-enhanced metallurgy may seem even more attractive. No way with antique swords. Ok...the little thing in the photos was polished on sandpaper in water, (smirdex, 320, 400, 600, 1500 and then etched with chloride and cleaned with jitekko paste.....the only one is the traditional step. The contrast of the surface and the hamon is huge, even the structure of the steel came out a bit. It's actually not gross if done sensitively and with enough care. But next time on stones. We usually use this method for kitchen knives from 19 191. It's OK there.

For me to afford genuine polishing stones is out of the question. So its very nice to see how to do it with commonly available materials.

Base, hiranik adjustment, edge narrowing after hardening. I do it on a belt sander. Blade aso 0.3mm. The final sharpening and geometry is on the arato stone. Another polishing of some stones. It's here on video somewhere. If the customer wishes, everything can be done manually. Just the file before hardening and the stones after hardening. However, it is necessary to pay something extra for such work. It is expensive. because it takes a lot of time. .
